    I needed to brace my deck and had no idea how to do it, I only knew what the finish product was suppose to look like. This is the most conprehensive video on bracing a deck or Pergola on CZcams. I purchase my material and all my hardware and proceeded onwards. I completed it and it came out really well thanks to this video! I would add a couple of things for novice FYI non-carpenters such as myself. I'm a licensed electrician, I dont even like carpentry but I was forced to do this or pay a lot for a simple job and Union IBEW electricians pride themselves in learning and doing things themselves whenever possible.
    I would add these things to the video: How did you size lengh of your braces?, Also how big of a miter saw do you need to miter a 4x4 or a 6x6? I had to go buy a saw, and lastly you used a speed square to layout the drill holes on the top beam side of your braces with a vertical line. But your braces are running in a 45 deg. angle. How can you hit the brace twice by vertically stacking your carriage bolts when your running the brace between the beam in a 45 deg.? Excellent job of teaching, you're a great instructor very detailed and straight to the point. You mention these as FYI jobs. You need quite a bit of tools to call these FYI's and someone with all the tools needed to do this job would already have the knowledge on how to use them, or they wouldnt have them in the first place. You have a big house a lot of land and a lot of toys whatever you do your doing well!!!! Thanks again for the video, excellent instructor!

    Your video is exactly what I was looking for. About to build a Pergola and wasn't sure how to put in knee braces. And also how to fasten two boards at the top of 6x6s . But your video just fixed that problem. Thanks!

    Awesome job. It looks great. How long did you make the knee braces? Is there a rule of thumb or did you just pick any length?
    Thanks so much and keep up the good work.

    Not timber frame. Timber frame incorporates mortise and tenon jounery with 3/4' dowels pinning them into place.

    Hey, I noticed the main beam is being supported onto the post by carriage bolts an not directly on top of the posts. With your experience doing this which option would you prefer?

    • @ProjectDadLife
      @ProjectDadLife  Před 4 měsíci +2

      With a pergola directly bolting is fine. If this was a deck joist system 100% notch your support post with a saddle and bolt. Thanks for watching

    • @TwinMcQuerns
      @TwinMcQuerns Před 4 měsíci +1

      If you don't have time to notch but are putting a roof on and need extra support Simpson makes the APDJT2-4 for solid joists and APDJT2-6 combined with a APVST flat strap for splices. This is easier, stronger and looks better than through bolting but is significantly more expensive. I would add another lag screw above the APDJT2-4 with a APVDW washer but I am a belt and suspenders kinda guy.
