- This week I wanted to share 18 things all foreigners will miss about England - myself included! After living in England for 4 years, I've since returned home to Canada and there's a lot of English stuff I miss. Having a pint in a pub garden, anyone??

Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a CZcams video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

Sorry just finished my tea and can not wait to make another before watching.

This American would love to leave for a saner land. My grandfather was English, but I can't claim British citizenship, alas.
Don't call a Canadian an American only at your peril.
It takes a visitor to remind us what a fantastic place the UK is 🇬🇧
Seconded. I take too much for granted.
Yes absolutely 😊
Do not make me laugh and most important of all, do not lie to yourself.
As a Brit there's something heartwarming and affirming about hearing your enthusiasm for our little country. Or it could be the whisky I'm drinking. Either way, it's put a smile on my face.
Thanks so much for watching!!
She is nice to listen to, lovely lass.
@Leigh Garfield I meant it as term of endearment, and I'm well aware of our accomplishments. And you yourself just used the word "small" to describe our country. It's right there. You typed it yourself, or did you not notice? You should probably calm down and find something more important to worry about.
Hilarity.

I found it funny that when the pubs closed for the virus, people bought beer at the shop and still sat outside pubs. If that's not British i don't know what is 😂

And the birds have started to shed their winter plumage, now resplendent in flimsy attire.
As a brit, "trains", and "reasonably priced" is two things i would never have used together in a sentence.
" two things i would never have used together in a sentence"
How about: "Trains should be more reasonably-priced" ?
“Trains and reasonably priced is...”
Did you go to primary school?
They can be cheap. But it's not a given.
Trains in England are pricey if you're going long distance but you can make them cheaper with railcards if youre going to use them often enough. When I had a young person's Railcard (under 25s) I made back the money I spent on it and still made a saving on my first journey!!
Now i live in Ireland and the trains are cheaper to use but there aren't enough stations or trains running to use all the time unless you're going between major cities. I miss the convenience of tiny stations in the UK like Maesteg and Sandgate. When I lived in rural areas like that, it was cheaper, faster and more convenient than a bus.
I spent some time in the States and tried their trains had to make a journey across a couple of States with one change along the way. I shall never complain about British Trains ever again. Though you get plenty of space in the carriages the journey speeds can be soooooooooooo slow.
I remember when fish n' chips were sold wrapped in the previous day's newspaper.
Yeah, now nothing to read while you dine on fine chips....
When they started having colour newspapers they found that the ink was carcinogenic.
Canterbury cathedral is an amazing place, you can literally sense the history when you enter.
in 1961 ,here oooopp North ,they were 1 shilling one penny ,7d for fish 6p for chips .Photo to prove it ! (I....just thought I'd share that .....)
You nailed it with 'Dogs in Pubs'. The world need dogs in pubs right now.
Woof!
A pub without a dog is not a real pub.
I always imagined my retirement being the old bloke in the corner of the pub smoking his pipe, making his pint last a couple of hours and feeding crisps to his Jack Russell.
"going to marks and spencers food hall to spend your rent money" ... i like your humour!
surely you have a direct debit to pay rent? I do.
So true! I'm English and I've never bought anything in Marks & Spencer's food hall
I got that sly little comment, had me laughing out loud.

Curry sauce is great on F&Cs - very popular in Wales.
Your not a foreigner, your a Canadian, your family and we love Canadians. Always welcome - come back soon.😁
Thanks! 😃
Canadians have always felt like our closest cousins, our North American Colonies who managed not to commit treason with our oldest enemies. But then, that's because in my case they literally are. And next time someone comments, remind them (because it's the period in history where their minds are still stuck) it was the Canadian forces, not Dad's Army, who really first defended the South Coast in WW2 (from the very end of 1939!). They also protected the West Indies and Hong Kong for us. Canada trained most of our pilots, built our vehicles, supplied the rifles for the Home Guard, fed the home country and resupplied us after Dunkirk. They sacrificed themselves bravely at Dieppe to learn lessons for the later invasion (and we now know was partly to get an Enigma machine) and had to themselves one of the 5 beaches at D-Day. Along with India, but more directly in terms of the home islands, we owe a massive debt to Canada. Arguably greater than any other. You are the main reason Churchill was able to say we could fight on "alone" in 1940. Or you could just say, "you'd be speaking German if it wasn't for us", and unlike the USA, it would be true 😀
Hope CANZUK happens and makes easier for movement between our country's, I would love to visit Canada and Australia.
Yeah. Don’t understand this foreigner thing. Canucks are Commonwealth, our friends. 🏴🏴🏴🇨🇦

Browsing around U Tube I came across this young ladies page, which I hadn't seen previously and I was impressed with her style and candor . So I looked at some of her other pages. One that really impressed me was the one where she openly tackled the comments which were totally rude and ignorant which attacked her appearance and persona. She handled these brilliantly by reducing those morons to be no better than scum. I wish her all the happiness and success in her life and and hope she soon gets her UK visa. We need more people like her in the UK and get rid of the sort of ignorant characters that insulted her.
Stuart Green.
Nice comment, Stuart. I agree.
go' on stu you tell em lad..
I only recently picked up on Alanna's chanel and, my word, I love this girl!
Forget the fact that she is just gorgeous, but you just need a lot of superlatives to describe her!
She is so vibrant, vivacious, articulate, positive in her attitude, funny in a way that I love, and just so natural, and I don't know what she actually does, now she's back in the UK, but whatever she does I will bet that she gives it 1000%, and I predict she will go far!
Amen Stuart.

Just by walking around u see 1000 year of history, medieval church, Tudor pubs, Stuart bakery, Victorian hamlets and school, and 60s housing estate, castle, folly, cobbled roads, tractors everywhere, loooooads of sheep and cows, and the only shops are a bakery, butcher, vegetable shop and that’s it.
This cutie loves England, she gets it.
My American husband loves England too, especially the beer gardens!🤦♀️🥰
Beer gardens. Yeah we're missing those too and sitting in a cosy pub by a roaring fire. Beautiful bank holiday weekend and not a beer garden open. Sigh.
Indeed, ‘Beer Garden’ not pub garden
Tesco has recently appeared in a local store here in the Philippines.
Yesterday I had a mug of 'real tea', lamb stew with Brussels and an apple crumble with custard.
Later I will have Tesco coffee with Bourbon biscuits.
I am literally sitting in the boondocks in rural Philippines!
Is it an official tesco? Its great its more accessible to expats
I'm an ex-pat Brit living in Switzerland (soon 31 years!) and what you said brought me to tears. I compartmentalize a lot of the things I miss and shut them away where they don't hurt. But you brought so much back in one fell swoop that it overwhelmed me. 99.9% of the time as an ex-pat you're concentrating on all the positive things around you and not what you miss. What struck me was your warm-hearted openness and quieter, deeper appreciation of things English. You are certainly an enrichment for the people around you.
I have 3 English-speaking Swiss-British daughters in their twenties who haven't lived in England (yet). One has just returned from a year in Ireland and I shall send them the link to this video. I do hope you make it back to England. Fingers crossed... All the best, Rob in Switzerland.
What you have is commonly known as homesickness hope you get back to your adopted country soon

Mr B But more babies are being born to foreign born mothers than British mothers.
@Mr B the 2011 census says it is less than 50% that identify as white British (Eng/Scots/Wal/Ire), Birmingham is heading that way too.
What a creep!
You don't have to have lived in the UK for four years to have things that you miss about the country. I've spent only five weeks there, and I have my own list -- albeit smaller than yours. I will only list my #1 "miss": Talking with the British people -- on the pavement, in a restaurant, in a pub and, yes, even on the Tube (talking on the Tube? Horrors!). Because I was there alone, I made it a point to seek out conversations whenever possible. I've had so many great conversations with the Brits that I cherish to this day. Even Brexit discussions. No arguments, just exchanges of opinions. Very educational for me to hear these things from a British point of view as opposed to CNN or BBC. Even commuters on the Tube were engaging with me. Imagine that.
I'm a Brazilian living in London. Can't imagine living anywhere else in the world. ❤ I might have to move to the Netherlands....I'm already feeling heartbroken 💔
Don’t go ! 👍
I'm English. Have lived in London and spent a considerable amount of time in the Netherlands. The latter is hands down better in terms of quality of life.
Don't get on a Tube when Cressida Dick's on the prowl.
@@chiefsdadI think that depends very much on where you live in the UK. Would you consider the Yorkshire Dales, the Cotswolds, the New Forest, Devon & Cornwall, Chester, York, Bath worse than living in the UK?
Not to mention an evening in a pub with great friends, laughing until tears are running down you face.
Believe me, we all miss those things here in UK as well. 🇬🇧🥰
As a Brit in Canada I miss fish & chips, I've not found proper chips in 4 years. When I visit the UK my M&S shopping trips are epic, "yes, I really am buying all these Percy Pigs"!
Percy Pig ice cream is available too!
there is a giant percy pig for easter
For me, it would be the raspberry Jaffa cakes and the crunchy peanut butter!
I live in the US now and I miss ALL these things too!! Top three for me is the humour, sarcasm and the way Brits converse with each other (it really is different to the USA) PUBS, everything about them including pub dogs(!) and pretty much the food that I cant get here. Love your videos as always Alanna ❤️
"we have Chinese food in Canada, we're not savages" 😂
A beer garden will be one of my first destinations after this lock down ends!
@Mark Hepworth has to be done pal. This lovely weather makes me want to get there even more
Here in the USA, sales tax or value-added tax is almost never included in listed prices, just like in Canada. I agree with the UK way of having all taxes included in the listed price, and I think every country should do this!
I believe in Europe it's a standard ;)
It is a good standard because it makes sense and it is friendly to consumers :)
@@joeceretti9098 1: Essentials, like food and children's clothes aren't taxed at all. (It gets weird sometimes. Cakes are apparently essential and not taxed. Cookies on the other hand aren't essential and are taxed.) 2: Most receipts here list how much tax you paid anyway, for anybody that cares...
Realistically though, nobody really gives a shit about the tax enough to check. What matters is how much lighter one's wallet will be when exiting the store, why not be upfront honest about it right from the start.
Its kind of like the USA going "metric. A great idea in theory but do not hold your breath...its not likely to happen any time soon....

Hope you get back soon - and when you do you should come to St.Albans ("Snorbins", it's pronounced here) where we have a cathedral containing building materials from each of the last 20 centuries, bits of Roman buildings, lots of pubs (used to be more per person than anywhere - not sure if it's still true), street markets, museums, and lots of stuff to explore. And eat and drink :-) I think you'll like it. (I've been to Toronto a couple of times - the drivers are *crazy* - even worse than in Manhatten!)

I never stop being surprised at what others see when I post a photo online from where I am in England. I'm showing off my new bathroom, they talk about the hot and cold taps (why?). I send a photo of my garden, they gush about the house down the road with a thatched roof. I posted a pic of my new settee and they talk about the fireplace (what about my settee?). Wedding photo (yes it's a medieval bloody church). I guess we do take much for granted - but my new bathroom really was amazing.
We have separate Hot and Cold water taps so that heated - and possibly infected - water is never mixed with drinking water. This is especially important in houses with tank based heating systems.
@@shoegazeforever8810 agreed. Despite my house being re-plumbed and the tank disposed of, I still chose separate taps.

You would also be in historical heaven in Wales with its dozens and dozens of castles. In fact I live right next door to one in North Wales and it is one of the first things I see when I wake up and open my bedroom curtains, and I feel so privileged to see it out of the window. Literally, I could throw a tennis ball out of my window and it would land in the castle's moat! It was built in the 13th Century and has a 'life' of its own, depending on the time of day or night and weather. It can be serene on a beautiful summer's day, ethereal and haunting as it is lit by the full moon and under the stars or menacing looking as it is silhouetted by a stormy night and lightning, resembling something out of a Hammer Horror film!

You hear the smooth hum of a small propeller aeroplane in the distance, probably coming into land at the local airfield a few miles away. Meanwhile the newborn ducklings are waddling behind their mother as she potters around the river bank... A light breeze blows and a couple of the ducklings topple over but soon hop up and scramble back in line. Ah, and look, here comes the burger and chips you ordered...
You're a cruel, cruel person AI. 😂👍🙏
Calm down 👍
I live in Canada and many of my relatives live in England, So I watch your every single video about the UK

Yorkshire as a whole is beautiful! I’m a from Leeds but moved to London due to work when I was 19 it’s great having posh southern folk look down at me for being Northern then they realise that I’m their boss!
Sounds like my kind of bag, would love to go there when I can.
Maybe start a go fund me to fill a shipping container with cheese, cider, skincare products, Chinese takeaway & the food section of Mark's and Spencer. Call it humanitarian aid ?!
It is true about Marks and Sparks Food halls - great food choices and great quality.
Think the humor in England is quite unique, and the rest of the UK too.
Humour*
Are you able to help me. Because we are planning to move to the UK soon. My grandfather is British born. Can I apply when in UK? Because we are still waiting on paper work from South Africa Cape town?
Loved this totally, as a Brit it’s encouraging....
But the biggest thing that made me grin, was Bob Mortimer.

If you ever find yourself in Devon visit Dartmouth, it’s a beautiful coastal town and particularly see the Cherub Inn. It was built in the 1300s and you can almost see people from that time running through the doors to tell everyone about the Spanish Armada or that there was this plot to blow up parliament 😀
You mention Canterbury, ugh the fish and chip shop opposite HMV just off the main street. So good!!
The girls more British than me ,and LM British and live there .
Hurry on back [when they'll let you!] we're going to open a M&S in a Pub' garden next to the castle for you !
You are right, after speaking with many expats, Americans, Canadians, Australians and New Zealander’s, history and architecture are the main things they miss most.
Your list is spot on! We were expats living in Surrey for 2 years. Garden pubs and historic sites....in your hometown or a short train ride away. Lovely memories! Also, can't forget those cheap flights😊
