    The first "diesel" truck I learned to drive on was a 1972 Autocar dumptruck, 318 x 871dd, 15spd, 20FA, 48Rocks, 513's. It was one big bad truck, loud and fun.

    Autocar needs to design a long haul sleeper cab version of that DC64. Owner operators like me would be all over them!

      It would be nice if they made a long square hood model to be more like the older style

      @@markwilliams4525 That's what I was getting at. Long hood, dual exterior breathers, dual stacks and a BIG comfy sleeper.

      @@MikeBrown-ii3pt I like kws, petes, freightliners and some macks but there's something about the Acars that are different. I almost sold it one time and am glad I kept it.

    Autocar was the only truck robust & powerful enough to run a snowplow and a power sander (cinder spreader) in the sizes required for the long plow route uses in the high mountains with steep grades and long circuit routes between turn around. It takes two Freightliners to do the job of one old Autocar.

    I drove a 1971 Autocar 335 cummins 5x4 gearbox double aluminum frame, one of the nicest trucks I ever drove. 1970/2015 retired.

      I drove a 70 Acar with a 290 Cummins. 13 speed pulling a Fruehauf tub trailer for a few years,, Always liked ACARs

    I believe it was back in 1987 or 89 they had a beautiful Tractor for over the road use, i saw one at a truck show one time and fell in love with that back, it was beautiful looked just like a Pete 379 model.

      Our city's Sanitation department uses Autocar trash trucks and the old school WhiteGMC/Volvo "cabover" trucks too.

      they make trash trucks now lots of company's buy the acx and there cap over engine

      Waste Management has a lot of the AutoCar ACX cabover rigs in their fleet with the McNeilus AutoReach side load compactor.
      Even Waste Management's Carson City, Nevada subsidiary Capital Sanitation has them too.

    I have a 1975 Autocar that looks like a Conatrucktor but on the data tag it says it is a S42B....originally with a Cummins 230 engine. Anyone have an idea what a S42B is?

      Yes MATS this year was cancelled. The 2021 MATS will be the 50th anniversary of the show. Definitely one to go to.

    As someone who works on Autocar garbage trucks 5 days a week, I can say that they are a pain in the ass to work on. And we just got a new conventional model roll off truck

    I think Mack makes a very good vocational truck as well.

      @@bertgrau9246 The way it works in such heavy duty applications is the customer largely gets to select the engine. its why a mack can be had with a cummins or a Ford with a caterpillar. or so I've been told, at least.

      I remember those 1/2 cabs being used as tri-axle dumps for TILCON Corp in CT. A couple were turned into service trucks for O&G in later years
