The new Prius is stunning, but is it more than a pretty face?

  • The Toyota Prius is now here in its 5th generation, but there has never been as much buzz around a new Toyota Prius before. Paddy Comyn drives it for AA Ireland.

Never thought a Prius could look so good, Wow! PHEV makes so much sense, I've come back from an Electric to a PHEV recently, few reasons why, mainly I just like to have an engine coupled with a 50 to 60 Km electric range is plenty for me, The physical buttons are a huge plus too, my last car had all the Touch Screen stuff with no physical buttons & it drove me bonkers, my PHEV now has a nice mix of both touch screen & buttons which is great. So, Well done Toyota!! Other manufacturers take note of the Physical buttons.

I always drove a diesel but have a 530e now. Nearly 300hp, plug it in every day, tipping around, rarely go to a petrol station. It’s getting 40mpg equivalent. Also gets 40 on a long run when battery is dead, but always has enough for a boost. Plus the petrol is so refined

    Jesus in the garden Patrick,
At that price (46,625 Euro's), an XSE Premium (that is what you are testing isn't it), would translate to $70,403.75 CAD ! We can buy that trim here in Newfoundland for (starting cost), $46,045 CAD. Why the huge price difference. At 70+ they'd never sell a single unit here me thinks.
We ordered a (red), 2022 Prime SE trim, in 2022. In March of this year, after 21 months, a Pearl coloured model landed and the dealer said "take it or leave it". We took it, even though the Pearl paint cost $600 more. And, it's not really white at all, looking closely, it really is pearl. We ordered the SE trim because it came with 17" tires and wheels. As nice as the 19's rims are, the 17's offer advantages. Better milage and handling, a more comfortable ride and much lower replacement cost. Our Prime will do 0~60 in 6.48 seconds and, we see 61.2mpg (3.84 L per 100Km). None of our roads are flat, it's all "up and down like a dog's stomach". So, those are impressive numbers. And, oddly, though the car came with plastic wheel covers (hub caps), meant to aid in reducing drag, underneath them is found a nice set of black alloy rims. I've never seen a car with hub caps that didn't have plain stamped steel rims behind the covers.
You must be charging on 220v to be seeing a 4 hour charge. We are using 115v and it takes 11 hours. Not a big deal, we charge overnight so it's not an issue. All the same, we are investigating buying a level 2 charger as that would be not only faster, it would be more economical.
We love this thing but, I have two worries; no spare ! While the regular Prius can be fitted with one (Toyota makes a kit available), the Prime can not use the kit (nowhere to stow it). If you get a sidewall tear away from home you'll need a tow-truck. The other worry is the low, low front end. Here, moose are a constant threat on our roads. We have, by far the most dense level of that animal than anywhere else in the world. Last I heard the stats there are, on average, two collisions per day here. If one is driving one of the huge pick-ups that are too common here you'll likely total it, but you'll walk away. Hitting a moose in a Prime will turn the car into an instant convertible and you'll be dead. And, it's not only a danger on our highways, we have moose in our garden every second day and we're 15 minutes from city centre.
My wife and me and two close friends spent two weeks in Ireland about five years ago. We all (like most of us here), have roots in Ireland so getting there was on "the bucket list". So very glad we could visit. All hands fell in love with the place, not a single bad angle to be found. I want to go back again. Wouldn't I just be in my glee driving our Prime on those country roads..........
    Cheers

My man failed to comment on the "AA Yellow" colour scheme! Stick the logo on the doors and you have a brand car

Shame about the charging speed and the boot size. Lovely looking car though!

@@TheAAiethat's true. It's not an SUV either which also deserves kudos. Extend the wheelbase a little, make it an estate and could be really great for family motoring. Great design language from Toyota though
