Her uncles played, and dedicated to us, and together we sang these Cordilleran song hits of Herman Bugtong from "Naawis ay Layad," "Ragsak," to "Padas" on that unforgettable evening when she invited me to visit her hometown, lovingly known as "Benguet's Little Alaska." The scene was surreal, with the golden sunset casting a warm glow over the quaint village. The melodies floated through the air, blending with the sounds of nature and creating an ambiance that felt timeless.
One uncle was a gentle gardener by day, transforming into a hilarious, whiskey-fueled comedian and classic guitarist by night. His antics had us all in stitches, his stories and jokes adding a touch of lightness to the evening. Another uncle was a dark horse with a golden voice, serenading us these songs that hinted at a past love life full of passion and heartache. He often spoke of how he chose the path of family and simplicity over the glitz and glamor of a career and studies, his voice carrying the weight of his choices. The third uncle was a sage-like figure, dispensing advice with the gravitas of a narrator, his words weaving a tapestry of guidance on achieving our dreams as a couple while the music played on. It was the best night of my life, especially when she introduced me to her cousins, uncles, and aunts. They accepted me warmly, telling me I was no different from them, just like one of their own.
The next day, we strolled around the village, the air fresh and crisp. We visited the gardens where she used to plow and plant vegetables, and I could almost see her younger self, working the land with determination and pride. The rich, earthy scent of the soil mingled with the fragrance of blooming flowers, creating an intoxicating blend that invigorated my senses. We climbed to the top of the mountains, the panoramic view taking our breath away. The landscape stretched out before us, a patchwork of fields and forests, with the distant mountains standing sentinel against the sky.
She shared stories about life in that place and the intricate processes behind all their productions. Each story was a window into a world so different from my own, yet I felt a deep connection forming with every word she spoke. She talked about the rhythms of the seasons, the festivals that marked the passage of time, and the community’s collective effort in every endeavor. It was a detoxifying experience, filled with learning and knowledge, like a balm for my soul. I fell in love with that place and felt even more in love with her.
But as the next day dawned, reality intruded. We had to return to the city, to our usual activities and the grind of daily life. That chapter of my life felt like a perfect dream, but a week after our return, the warmth began to fade. The bustling city, with its noise and chaos, felt suffocating after the serenity of her hometown. I asked her what had happened, but she was speechless, her eyes reflecting a turmoil I couldn’t understand. Days later, she confessed with a heavy heart that she needed to go back to her ex-boyfriend and give him another chance. They had a handsome child together, deserving of a full and happy family. I accepted that their separation was temporary, possibly due to conflicts and misunderstandings. I had simply entered her life during a moment of bitterness with her partner. Our time together was brief, but the feelings we shared were genuine, intense, and unforgettable.
I hope she finds what she is looking for and pray she finds good health and happiness. She will always hold a special place in my heart. As for me, I hope that one day I too can find a place to build and live, or maybe even spend the rest of my life, somewhere in her enchanting hometown of "Madaymen," where dreams and reality once beautifully intertwined. The memories of those days linger like a cherished dream, a reminder that some places and people leave an indelible mark on our souls.
