The Stadium animators gave too much personality to the Pokemons. They tried with Gen 3 and 4 but they look stiffer.

Possibly more, yeah, so that they can be used by the opponent.
However, that way there is the potential of me using no Metronome Pokémon at all, which defeats the purpose.

The Team Red you listed had 7 members. Even though Blaziken would've been a nice Fighting-type counterpart to Blue's Lucario, I decided to exclude it and add Scizor instead for its type variety.
