- I HAD THE CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE MY FIRST 18th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION HERE IN CEBU!
18 Roses, 18 Candles, 18 Treasurers, and one "bring home" pineapple...
If you didn't know, the 18th birthday for a Filipina can be quite a big moment. Sometimes families may have a party that acts as a "coming of age" celebration... this is known as a "debut". Back in 2013, before #BecomingFilipino ever existed, I used to sleep on a couch in a little home down a back road in Talamban Cebu. My friend Mic Mic (whom I worked with in Hong Kong) and his family opened up their home to me. One of the members of that family, her name was Summer. She was just a kid... but wow how time flies! Here she is, 18 years old and celebrating her debut!
I was so grateful to be invited. Not only was it a wonderful reunion with a family who truly inspired my life and connection with the Philippines... but I also learned a lot!!
From Cebu, I head back to Manila and continue my production project. But along with that, I also end up doing my marriage seminar, as well as visiting the museum! If you didn't know, the National Museums in Manila are free... and very beautiful! Definitely something to think about checking out! Oh, and if you are planning a wedding, you can also check out a unique area in Divisoria...
A very raw catch up with my Philippines life in this vlog!

The part where you went to divisoria brought me back to 2008 when my wife and I were buying materials for our wedding then. I applaud the tailors and seamstresses their in Divisoria because they can work magic. I had my wedding suit, my brother's suit, and my pastor's suit made in divisoria. We just picked a design from their catalog (I chose a Hugo Boss style) and they copied every detail of the design, and I got a suit which people thought back then was an expensive one, little did they know that I had it made for 8k which was a small fraction of the cost for a boutique made suit. Divisoria rocks! 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Well played.... well played haha
Kulas, Therine is a lady with great patience and wonderful manners. You are definitely blessed to have her in your live.
In the US, we have the sweet 16th birthdays but I attended a Mexican girl 15th birthday and It was similar to the 18th birthday you attended in Cebu.
It was good to see you sharing time with Kumar on your way to Davao.
Enjoy your production time!
yes 18 yr old girls debut here is like Quincinera, kinse or 15 and sweet 16 in the US, its 18 here coz thats the legal age for Filipinos to get license, get atm cards, credit cards, get married legally with parental consent, basically a legal adult for women, while its 21 yrs old to young men, thats their debut as debut but they are also legal adults when 18.
👍👍
Therine has become quite the intrepid motorist, even confidently negotiating Manila traffic. 👍💪🤙
👍
I'm so excited for your wedding. God bless you both.
Debut, every 18 years old dream😊 Wedding preparations is always tiring 🌸Goodluck & Stay safe🙏🩵🇨🇦
One of the most beautiful celebrations of becoming an adult for a girl in the Philippines. Very nice Debut and thank you for sharing. 😊
Have a wonderful day
Hey Kyle, you are rocking that cool outfit for the debut. Love those locally made shoes. 👍🏽 Thank you and Power On!
Wow that shirt looks smashing lol looking good Kulas 😎🙂 weeee…. Therine driving you around 🤣 it must be LOVE hehe 😇😎❤️ I’ve never been in that museum 😇😇😇
Stoked on the tropical theme
Summer’s grand entrance reminded me of attending the US Embassy Marine Ball in 1983 at the Manila Hotel during my first of three Foreign Service assignments there running the USIA printing center. The wife of one of my office colleagues had gone to the CR and re-entered the Ballroom. The band started playing the Philippine National anthem and everyone stopped dancing, turned around and looked at her… she was confused… she hadn’t noticed Imeda Marcos had entered the room just behind her. 😂
Hi Kulas good to dee you again.been a while we miss you 😁

GOOD JOB! KULAS
For a second there, I thought that pineapple had some significance regarding the debut as I haven't heard of anything regarding pineapples and debuts, only for you to mention that it's just your indeed Bring Home haha because I thought there was something I didn't know with regardings to giving pineapples as Bring Homes to guests. And yeah that's what you'd expect to see during debuts, although I was informed that a debut also had a traditional dance called the Cotillion that is different from the dances the debutante will have with the 18 Roses, but rather it's the debutante's court that dances the waltz during the reception; most modern debuts choose to skip the Cotillion Dance however, or at least that was the case with the debuts that I attended before.
That pineapple was delicious!
Looking good, nice outfit Kulas! The shoes look great!
I enjoyed wearing it
Dugay ka wla nka upload brad pero sulit imo pgbalik, luzon, visayas and mindanao😁
You'll give Lito Atienza a run for his money with your polo shirt. Try to visit also the Manila clock tower it is also a museum.
THE MANILA CITY HALL WAS AN AMERICAN DESIGN PATERNED AFTER A PRISON😊 AN OLD PINOY WHO USED TO WORK THERE😊
interesting!
kulas❤
keep safe
Glad you've had fun bro💯🔥
You attended the Debut party on the daughter of your friend.
Debut is usually the age of majority once when the teenage girl turns into an adult.
And the debut for a guy is 21 years of age.
And you took a pineapple on the party 🍍
And you grill some chicken on Cateel 🍗
And you’re back in Manila and you went in the museum.
And Therine was with you for the seminar for family planning.
Family planning is needed for not having too many children.
And my step dad John went to Viajero and he was in Manila when you went to Manila you did not see him.
He went in the Makati were you and Therine went.
Hello Kulas amping permi brod
Amping Kanunay
20:23 Ang suplada ni ate. Hahaha
Did Kulas have to give up his Canadian citizenship in order to become a Filipino citizen?
You should have a bachelor party a real bachelor party
Is married engineer unmarried engineer at one point? Or, are there 2 engineers. Curious❤
two engineer friends, there's single engineer and married engineer but i think the single engineer not single anymore lol 😆
Two different engineers haha
Haha lol
❤❤ PINA IMPROVED YAN NE #MAYORISKOMORENO kaya lalong gumanda.. schools Tondominion hospitals built just 3 yrs. by beloved mayor Isko. ❤️
Kulas when are you seeing Boy Perstaym again i think he's in Mindanao
we are chatting! But I have a lot going on right now
16:20 This still really frustrates me. How our paintings always depict the Chinese traders coming here (because that's what happened after the Spanish colonial period, when they suppressed native shipbuilding). When in reality, during the pre-colonial era, it was Southeast Asian trading ships who went to China. We were the ones with the ships.
Boy manila Kay
With all due respect, Kyle, DEBUT is pronounced "day - byoo" (not "de-boo"). In some families and certain social circles, it's a formal event celebrated with pomp and circumstance. It can run pretty pricey too -- for the celebrant, as well as participants.
In Mexico, there's QUINCEANERA, when a girl turns 15 (not 18, like in the Philippines or United States). Does Canada have them?
Never heard of a debut in Canada. First time I heard of it was the Philippines :)
Filipinos pronounce a many English words differently. My wife’s family from Lapu-Lapu on Mactan, Cebu pronounce ‘debut’ in a way that sounds like “de’ butt” to me. It took me years to figure out my brother-in-law B.O. Berame was actually named ‘Beau’ and B-O is how they pronounced it! 😮 The fact that her 11 siblings also have 2-3 ‘nicknames’ each was also confusing at first. She used flash cards with their names before we went there for our church wedding in ‘97 so I would remember them all.
Nope.. 1st birthday.. 7th birthday then for girls 18th birthday.. for boys it's usually when they turn 21 .. I think.
18 Debut in Latin Countries is called QUINCEAÑERA, the celebration of a girl's 15th birthday not 18 marking her passage from girlhood to womanhood; the term is also used for the celebrant herself. So, a lot of them get pregnant by 18. My neighborhood in Chelsea, MA seems like that.
The Halo-halo of people, culture, and food in the Philippines is the original melting pot.
I don't think debut is pronounced that way, but hey who cares.
Kulas, pls get your pimple on your nose checked. 🙏🏼
