Russia has a huge land area with extremely long borders to protect so they need a lot of men. The UK is a small defensible island, and the power of the empire was based on sea dominance, so they needed a lot of ships but not a huge number of men.
US definitely doesn't have the most manpower but they don't need to because they have the best toys.
Vietkongs like to introduce themselves
@@ultranationalist. Living 50 years in the past I see.
@@ultranationalist. I mean, we say hi to each other quite a bit. You should really brush up on world matters.
"Vietnam is now considered to be a potential ally of the United States, especially in the geopolitical context of the territorial disputes in the South China Sea and in the containment of Chinese expansionism."
Lol, a well uneducated comment 🤣 Rath must be American
Some say the Taliban won the War in Afghanistan. That's one way to look at it, but you can also look at it more as just the USA beating the crap out of terrorists, forcing them to hide underground for 20 years, inflicting wildly disproportionate casualties, then finally giving up and pulling out on their own terms after achieving the war goals of a) killing their leader and b) killing a bunch of terrorists in order to avenge 9/11. All in all, I tend to think the USA won the War in Afghanistan, their only failure being trying to establish a democracy there. All the Taliban did was run for their lives from endless drone strikes and attack their fellow countrymen, acting all victorious after the US got tired of beating them up. The US was victorious over the Taliban, forcing them to run and hide for 20 years, and the Taliban was victorious over the Afghan government only after the US decided to leave on their own terms. That doesn't mean the Taliban was victorious over the US.
So just a fun fact, the Qing Dynasty from China is why we call it China now. Qing is pronounced like "Ching". The actual name for China is Zhongguo, which is what the Chinese themselves call it today.
1) Russia has always had a large army for their enormous country. Except for the world wars, the British Army did not need to be as big as the European continental powers, but the Royal Navy was the largest in the world from before 1820 until about 1943 when the U.S. Navy overtook it.
2) In the early decades of the original video, Germany and Italy had not been unified.
3) Before the Civil War, the American Army had less than 20,000 officers and men, and that included some who left to fight for the South. Two years later, the North had 1 million and the South probably at least half that.
4) Austria-Hungary existed only from 1867 to 1918.
5) When the communists took control of Russia in late 1917, the Russian Civil War began almost immediately.
6) The U.S. never wanted or needed a large army in peacetime until after World War 2. The U.S. Navy was the second largest in 1924.
7) Both the Chinese government and the communists they were fighting in their civil war were on the side of the Allies. I believe they cut back but did not stop fighting each other while also fighting the Japanese.
8) When you said, "Taiwan had a lot," that was in 1949. In that year, the anti-communist government of China (which included Taiwan) lost the Chinese Civil War and was left with only Taiwan. This is why China so badly wants Taiwan back.
9) The British Armed Forces have a total personnel of only 148,000, but superior training and technology would allow them to defeat many of the larger militaries on this list.
10) The statistics for North Korea are misleading. They have over 1 million troops, but they're poorly trained conscripts, and probably half-starved. They have many tanks and other weapons, but much of their equipment is 40-50 years old and poorly maintained. I've seen lists that claim they have the most warships in the world, because they count every coast guard patrol boat and landing craft. If North Korea again attacked the South, and did not use their nukes, they probably would have some initial success. But within days, U.S. air power would begin to annihilate the North Korean army. I would imagine that North Korea would then collapse into anarchy and everybody capable of walking would try to get to China. Do you think China wants to take care of 20+ million refugees? Every time North Korea makes their ridiculous threats, I imagine China calling them and telling them not to go too far, because China will have to clean up the mess. I don't worry that they will start a war, and apparently neither do many South Koreans. The North Korean government is evil but not stupid; their objective is to remain in power, same as any other.
This man's surprise seeing that other wars exists is quite sad
Well done. These historical comparisons are interesting. The population shifts around the world are equally fascinating. Hope to see more. Thanks.
"I don't know what side China were on. I should probably know that."
My understanding is that the Chinese name for World War 2 roughly translates into English as "The War of Japanese Aggression." They didn't do anything that I'm aware of to help the allies in Europe but they were mortal enemies of Imperial Japan so I guess they could be considered an ally in that sense.
Less of a ally and more of I’m dying send help
This was fascinating!!
Future reference you should put your screen underneath the little green men on the video so we can see the total amount of countries
Then he covers up the year. There is no good place for him to overlay
north Korea has a big army because if you are 13 years old you are in the army over there
The chinese were actually allied with the US during WW2 well technically. China suffered horribly under japanese occupation. My grandparents were tortured under that occupation. They eventually started a farm desperate to leave it all behind until Mao showed up and it just got worse. My family escaped in the late 80s under the asylum act now we are in the states at least most of us. we just can only watch as china is just not doing very well.
These numbers are crazy to think of like 10 million people is a insane amount it’s crazy they could manage
USA has a population of 330 million not 280 million
More Timelapse videos like these please find them very interesting to watch and have someone else’s thoughts and opinions on!!
Cina was big in the 1920s because of civil war and big in the 30s because of invasion by Japan.
This is just in active personal
What you do not understand is China may have the numbers but not the experience of fighting in wars. They do not have the alliance needed to do so. They have more enemies. Then alliance.
China was at war against Japan in WW2
You should check out the fantastic video "How nuclear weapons work" by the Ryan McBeth channel.
Saxony is part of modern day Germany, so is Prussia(well kinda it's part of Poland as well), as well as Bavaria.
Empire of Russia's monarch had to keep a big army to control their population of surfs
На конец Второй Мировой Войны армия СССЕР была более 11 миллионов человек, если мне не изменяет память.
Interesting video
might want to take a look at your google searches at 15:05 ✌
North Korean men are forced to serve minimum 10yr military service once they turn age 18. just because the numbers are large doesnt mean much in their case.
The US did not keep a standing army until WWII.
Fun fact before world war 2 broke out Germany and Russia split Poland before that Russia and Poland had a war and poland won
That's because the USA had a fight a two-front war Europe and in Asia that's why USA had more men
Hungry tried to revolt against the Austrian empire so they made the Austrian Hungarian empire to please the the hungarians by giving them more rights and power henceforth the title
This is a bit inaccurate as it only depicts the active military personnel of any nation at once and not the full size of the military including the reserve personnel.
Your pic was blocking the last quarter of the graphs. So didn't watch. Try moving ur pic on the other side when ur going to post something like this. That way we can follow along with u Thurston.
The Russia Japan war Japan win with one-quarter of the amount of the Russian military manpower that was because of naval power and training weirdly by the United States
Meat shields and cannon fodder. Mind you, if we simply accept tha countries make war, I want my country to fight well, and my sympathy is with the fighters on all sides.
I don't think Russia is considered a major military power anymore LMAO
Facts how are they still 2nd most powerful
@@turdcurd9082 They have by far the 2nd most active nuclear weapons
As far as they have enough nukes to obliterate the whole world i wouldn't say they arent a major military power
@@xRakanishu Having nuclear weapons is a deterrence not a sign of a powerful military.
Millitary is powerful
Generals are freaking stupid
All Ukrainian Forces of Defence now is more than 1.2 million
Ground troops aren't really needed anymore
They definitely still are for urban combat and holding territory
They are
If China decided to field 400m troops they’d have to feed them, house them, provide medical support and a useable weapon.
Lol good luck with that. And do you know what an army of 400M sounds like to the USA? One hell of a juicy target 😂
