Russia has a huge land area with extremely long borders to protect so they need a lot of men. The UK is a small defensible island, and the power of the empire was based on sea dominance, so they needed a lot of ships but not a huge number of men.

Some say the Taliban won the War in Afghanistan. That's one way to look at it, but you can also look at it more as just the USA beating the crap out of terrorists, forcing them to hide underground for 20 years, inflicting wildly disproportionate casualties, then finally giving up and pulling out on their own terms after achieving the war goals of a) killing their leader and b) killing a bunch of terrorists in order to avenge 9/11. All in all, I tend to think the USA won the War in Afghanistan, their only failure being trying to establish a democracy there. All the Taliban did was run for their lives from endless drone strikes and attack their fellow countrymen, acting all victorious after the US got tired of beating them up. The US was victorious over the Taliban, forcing them to run and hide for 20 years, and the Taliban was victorious over the Afghan government only after the US decided to leave on their own terms. That doesn't mean the Taliban was victorious over the US.

So just a fun fact, the Qing Dynasty from China is why we call it China now. Qing is pronounced like "Ching". The actual name for China is Zhongguo, which is what the Chinese themselves call it today.

    1) Russia has always had a large army for their enormous country. Except for the world wars, the British Army did not need to be as big as the European continental powers, but the Royal Navy was the largest in the world from before 1820 until about 1943 when the U.S. Navy overtook it.
    2) In the early decades of the original video, Germany and Italy had not been unified.
    3) Before the Civil War, the American Army had less than 20,000 officers and men, and that included some who left to fight for the South. Two years later, the North had 1 million and the South probably at least half that.
    4) Austria-Hungary existed only from 1867 to 1918.
    5) When the communists took control of Russia in late 1917, the Russian Civil War began almost immediately.
    6) The U.S. never wanted or needed a large army in peacetime until after World War 2. The U.S. Navy was the second largest in 1924.
    7) Both the Chinese government and the communists they were fighting in their civil war were on the side of the Allies. I believe they cut back but did not stop fighting each other while also fighting the Japanese.
    8) When you said, "Taiwan had a lot," that was in 1949. In that year, the anti-communist government of China (which included Taiwan) lost the Chinese Civil War and was left with only Taiwan. This is why China so badly wants Taiwan back.
    9) The British Armed Forces have a total personnel of only 148,000, but superior training and technology would allow them to defeat many of the larger militaries on this list.
    10) The statistics for North Korea are misleading. They have over 1 million troops, but they're poorly trained conscripts, and probably half-starved. They have many tanks and other weapons, but much of their equipment is 40-50 years old and poorly maintained. I've seen lists that claim they have the most warships in the world, because they count every coast guard patrol boat and landing craft. If North Korea again attacked the South, and did not use their nukes, they probably would have some initial success. But within days, U.S. air power would begin to annihilate the North Korean army. I would imagine that North Korea would then collapse into anarchy and everybody capable of walking would try to get to China. Do you think China wants to take care of 20+ million refugees? Every time North Korea makes their ridiculous threats, I imagine China calling them and telling them not to go too far, because China will have to clean up the mess. I don't worry that they will start a war, and apparently neither do many South Koreans. The North Korean government is evil but not stupid; their objective is to remain in power, same as any other.

"I don't know what side China were on. I should probably know that."
My understanding is that the Chinese name for World War 2 roughly translates into English as "The War of Japanese Aggression." They didn't do anything that I'm aware of to help the allies in Europe but they were mortal enemies of Imperial Japan so I guess they could be considered an ally in that sense.

They eventually started a farm desperate to leave it all behind until Mao showed up and it just got worse.
