Both are excellent vehicles and I highly recommend you pushing to get hold of one via secondary market means (mine were from eBay but you've also got options via Facebook Star Wars groups)

Great molds on both vehicles, but you're right I think, the paint job on this ship is lovely, which to me, makes it a superior vehicle. Both are great ships though and they look great next to each other.
I love this iteration, especially the care taken with the weathering and such. I think the only misstep was the odd choice of red paint inside the exhaust ports of the engines. It would have looked better without.
I was lucky in getting mine.
I was unaware of its release (as I’m not a super hardcore fan so uninformed). I went to a local Toys R Us to get a present for my niece’s first b-day and I happened to take a quick glance over the other stuff and found this. Mine is still in its box, but the Y-Wing has always been a huge personal fave and my 1983 original got lots of play as I imagined it to be a million different craft from different imagined places/times/things. I still have it and it’s still in great condition, thankfully.
But… I’ve struggled for a long time wanting to take this one out and set it free.
I’m happy to see you did so I could somewhat experience such.
Still unsure if I’ll do the same. After all….I can’t fly it around the back yard anymore without the neighbors thinking I’ve lost my mind. so what’s the point? LOL! 😁

Funny you should say that.... I recently opened the new Mandalorian Rescue Set.... and that's not a million miles away (with a window)
I've had this 30th Anniversary Y-Wing and crew since December 2007 in the box, still not opened it lol. I've been buying a few vehicles loose as so not to be challenged with the open it or not quandary. The packaging is on point, one of the best they've done.

@ugly looser don't worry.... I've kept the box in perfect condition and won't throw away! I'll look out for a second some time in future... but don't worry I have that option to rebox! ☺

Recently found your channel, and have now subscribed! Really pleased that you have done a review of this. I have one too, bought when it first came out in 2007. The Y-wing is my favourite SW ship. Never understood why the front guns are so small on the red one (and also the 1999 POTF release). Even the vintage one had better guns than that. The guns on this 30th anniversary one though look perfect.

This one is sadly missing from my collection. And it’s cost prohibitive to get now! I do have TVC RotJ Y wing but I always preferred the gold. Congrats on adding it to your collection!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the T.A.C. I love the cardbacks.,the Battle packs.,the Evo packs and the Vehicle boxes (maybe even more than T.V.C) (sacrilege perhaps?) It also has a great range of figures in it. (love the E.U figures) Cheers Only One.,the B-wing looks great too!!!

Damn. Now I am seriously considering repainting my OTC with yellow over the red. I priced these with eBay sellers here in the states, and at the moment something in a condition similar to yours is pretty steep. I do have an airbrush.I don’t know how to USE it, but I have it. 🤷🏽♂️

Anyone else upset the put in a permanent Droid instead of leaving the socket so you could put which ever droid you wanted in place? Why would they do that? That’s one thing I loved about the original Y-Wing, they corrected that annoyingly bad fake R2 head in the original X-Wing and made it more like the movies so an actual Droid could slot in! And Hasbro revoked the feature??? WTF? Is that section something you could unscrew and remove or is it a permanent mod to the mold?
Luckily, Hasbro’s Vintage Collection version of the Y Wing has an open slot for a the droid of your choice. Sadly, the slot in the 1983 version is only big enough for the Kenner droids. The later Hasbro droids are too wide to fit inside the 1983 Y Wing :(
How do you open the bottom up?! I have this Y-Wing, and there is a hatch on the bottom that I can't open.
You talking about the box? Or the actual X wing?... 🙂

Do all post-1980s Y-Wing Fighters have non-removable Astromech Droids?
Good question.... and not sure? 🤔 not sure what the TVC one was like....
The Vintage Collection version of the Y Wing does have a open space for the droid of your choice. The annoying thing about the 1983 version is, the droid slot is only wide enough for a Kenner droid. The later Hasbro droids are wider and do not fit into the 1983 Y Wing.
