- This is the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit. The backbone of the US Air Force's long-range missions is the stealthy bomber known as the B-2 Spirit. The bomber's special skills, especially the stealth, enable it to slip past even the strongest enemy defense and deliver bombs with extreme accuracy on crucial targets. Several years ago, military activities in Iraq served as a showcase for the B-2 Spirit's capabilities. The B-2 Spirit is unquestionably incredibly expensive, even being the most expensive military aircraft in military aviation history as a strategic bomber that is difficult to equal. According to various sources of information, One B-2 Spirit unit costs US$ 2.4 billion. Costs for maintenance are no less expensive. This airplane needs 124 hours of maintenance to complete a flight lasting one hour.

I had a 79 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale with the gasoline converted diesel 5.7 l V8. It didn't need hardly any maintenance. The only problem I had with it was the transmission. But that car served us well for several years and I loved to drive it.
32mpg on the highway and that was fully loaded with cargo.

I found out many years later from my nephew that the turbo hydramatic 400 transmission was inferior.
He worked on transmissions and saw these all the time for maintenance. I don't remember what the most common problem was. Anyway, afte4 several years of use, I never knew when it was going to get stuck in first gear when I was 20 or 50 miles from home.

A lot of maintenance is needed for a plane that has the radar cross section of a pigeon and can carry 40,000 lb payload. It has 172 ft wingspan and is virtually invisible to radar.

Well, the good thing is that the 124 hours of maintenance is performed by multiple people and can be concurrent but that's still a huge amount of work. I guess that is partially because of the number of hours flown on each mission/sortie(?).

That number is so over-simplified that it's meaningless. Here's the thing about military maintenance: it's all timed out based on that specific job. Example - A work order is generated to inspect the tires on the landing gear. So we review the instructions and the safety documentation on doing the job. Then we go find the aircraft the work order is assigned to. Oops, we forgot our tools. So we go back to get our necessary tools, and there's another guy who's doing this other job, and he needs a hand "for a minute." So half an hour later, we're done helping, and away we go again, but we're almost to the plane when we realize the tread gauge is missing from the kit. So we go look around to find one. Then we make it to the plane, inspect the tires, and head back to the tool crib. But the door is locked, and we gotta wait around for someone with a key. We stow our stuff and get back to sign off on the work order. Now, we were only actually working for 15 minutes, but we've been pissing around for almost four hours. So we log 4 hours on our work order time sheet to justify our day, so the guy reviewing it has something to put in his computer system and we don't look like an overachiever trying to get assigned more work. Everybody knows that it shouldn't and doesn't take four hours to do the job, but that's how it gets reported, literally hundreds of times a day.
And that's how you get over-simplified, ballooned statistics like "it takes 125 hours of maintenance per hour of flight time" that get touted around on the Internet.

It's more than others, but most planes need x amount of time of repair for x number of flight hours. The B-2 is closer to 119 hours and not 124. The B-52 still takes 60 hours of maintenance per hour of flight.

Used for flattening settlements. During 2003 Iraq , Afghani war, they used to take off from bases in UK/Germany, reach Afghan by night, completely flatten their target during night and landed back at the bases by morning.
