    Jet is the show's best villain from a meta point of view because he had the potential to replace the EVA units entirely and ruin the show. No suffering pilots, probably no 3th impact. Just dead angels and happily ever after. All the drama that I liked this show for would just vaporize.

      The last few angels appear in less than a year from this episode, and I don't see Jet Alone being able to do anything against any of them, other than being trashed by them. MAYBE if the next angel came after a decade or something they could turn this Proof of Concept into an actual effective weapon.

      its debatable whether Jet Alone could even produce such a thing in the first place. it's of course entirely possible, otherwise Ritsuko wouldn't shit bricks at the mention of it, but as Kaworu explains, AT Fields are something all "living beings" possess. the AT field is only visible for angels and Eva's because there's are physically strong enough, due in part to the fact that there's an angel in there, as well as another human likely in the form of primordial soup. how would Jet Alone produce an AT field from something that cant possibly possess one since it isn't alive? without just turning it into a bootleg Eva at least, and throwing a soul in there.

  • @johnbewty

    Great vid. I agree with you but man, I think you skipped one of the most downright foundational revelations of the episode. Misato is treated as an utterly disposable asset by NERV and her "best friend" Ritsuko.
    They keep Misato in the dark; Ritsuko lets her charge into a nuclear reactor on the verge of meltdown in the heart of a rampaging robot and Misato nearly dies in the process. That's pretty cold of Ritsuko and NERV in general. If I recall correctly Ritsuko doesn't even seem particularly conflicted about it.
    It really casts the rest of Ritsuko and Misato's relationship in a different light. All the characters in Evangelion are broken in various ways, but Ritsuko may be the most chilling.

    • @coole59
      @coole59 Před 5 lety +170

      That is why Ritsuko deserves every single slap that Misato gives her later on. The relationship between the two changes from being warm to distrustful once Misato realizes that Ritsuko has lied to her about everything.

      Ritsuko is bound to loneliness and sacrificing others by her own choice, as Gendo. She's quite the opposite of Rei, but the two of them feel manipulated and empty nonetheless. Akagi is a great character, strong, dark, and emotionally more mature, about distance between beings and such philosophical matters.
      She's ready to end humanity for the sake of one thing : truth on the form of true love. Her last word is : "liar". She's cold, and morally corrupt, but her goal is all but human. Decency of heart.

      I think while 26 gets a free pass, 25 is the worst. Anno basically admitted that 25' (first half of EoE) was the original plan and that what we got was cobbled together using recycled footage and it shows. It's really more of the same as 26 and it actually detracts from 26's impact. I know I pretty much switched off during 26 once I realized it would be much the same as the previous episode. I think folks would be far more accepting of EoTV if it were just 20 minutes and not nearly 50 minutes of random imagery.
      14 takes close second for being almost equally pointless.

      When I first watched Evangelion, I actually stopped watching partway through episode 25. Anyway, so after a few weeks I managed to drag my way through the last 2 episodes, but couldn't come to a conclusion as to what I would score it out of 10, so I made a spreadsheet and graph in excel, rating each episode out of 10. Like HyperToxBox says, I actually scored episode 26 twice as high as 25, it was that much better. (episode 25 got a 1/10 whereas 26 got a 2/10) If you're wondering, the whole series averaged out to a 6.58, which I rounded to a 7/10. This actually fit my overall opinion of the series, and the vague idea of a score I had before undertaking the project. Oh and Jet Alone got a 6/10. If anyone actually cares for some reason, I can post my scores for all of the episodes so you can insult my shit taste.

The already mysterious and sinister atmosphere of the show combined with the very retro and inhuman design of Jet Alone was unnerving to me. I could tell by the fact that it was aimed at the control center that it would walk into it. Evangelion does a really good job of making powerful things like the Evas and Angels truly feel massive and powerful. The fact that it was so massive, so inhuman, and completely out of control made it one of the only parts of the show that made me a little uncomfortable. I doubt it was intentional but it's something I felt. At least until Unit 01 came to stop it and it got kinda comical.

    I always thought it was pretty obvious that Jet Alone was meant to be an analogy for more traditional giant robots/mecha shows and it's failure at the end represents the passing of the torch to Eva as the new mecha for the modern times. At least, that's how I saw it.

      As for what it actually is, it's a reference like many things in Eva are, to past franchises. In this instance jet alone is a call back to jet Jaguar from Godzilla.

    Frankly, Jet Alone should have gotten a TON of resources allocated to it, at the very least as a backup to the Evas. Even a giant, nuclear-powered mecha would still have been MASSIVELY cheaper to produce and operate than an Eva, and even if, say, you only managed to give it a rudimentary AT field, you could just swamp an Angel with numbers until one got through. The Evas are a Tiger II to Jet Alone's Sherman; massively complex, finicky and expensive, but very powerful, vs cheap, reliable, and good enough to get the job done.
    I would have liked to see a Jet Alone unit go up against an Angel at least once.

    Fun Fact: Jet Alone is a reference to Jet Jaguar from Godzilla vs. Megalon - its design is directly inspired by the robotic hero, down to the doofy grin, and his name, "Jet Alone," is a combination of JJ's name in the movie, and the original name the character was created with, "Red Alone."
    Anno is a diehard tokusatsu/kaiju fan, and Eva itself is just as much a send-up of live action Japanese movies as it is of mecha anime.

    I felt this episode showcased more how petty some of the characters were and how hamstrung people like Misato, Ritsuko and company were in open debate. I'm sure if Ritsuko had been given permission, she would've torn the Jet Alone project manager a third butthole for his arrogance.
    In fact, I almost feel like she only looked so confident in her initial questions because she was sure they were in the dark on various details. Upon realizing she didn't know how much had been leaked, she felt that she needed to keep quiet.
    Basically, she was looking for a response that she could troll the crap out of, realized she couldn't without revealing critical secrets and it soured her mood; hence why she and Misato were so grumpy (even if only Misato showed her displeasure).

    One thing i really like about Jet Alone is just how starkly it draws the line between Those Who Know What's Really Going On (Gendo, Ritsuko) and Those Being Kept In The Dark (Misato, Shinji). This dichotomy defines a lot of the goings on at Nerv for the rest of the series and this is the first time it's really spelled out

  • @theMoporter
    @theMoporter Před 6 lety +108

    Something that's also overlooked by this episode is that Misato and Ritsuko are subjected to sexism, despite how capable they are. Gender plays a large part in their anxieties, especially as women are bombarded with the message to have kids and settle down at their age. That they're not only isolated by NERV's special treatment but bigotry too, it makes Ritsuko's sabotage and Misato's courage both much more satisfying (or justifiable, depending on how you look at it).
    Women still take a lot of flack for their gender in the military and in STEM fields, so it adds a bit of reality to the situation - while NERV is all about pragmatism and who can do the job the best, the rest of society is busy with old fashioned gender politics. Yui, Naoko and Ritsuko were respectively some of the most essential scientists in producing the Evas, but they may have never flourished outside of NERV/Gehirn

    • @gateauxq4604
      @gateauxq4604 Před 6 lety +30

      If you take into account the fact that Evas hold mothers’ souls even NERV starts to have an ulterior motive for letting women into such high positions of authority and expertise, even if the original theory that an Eva could hold a soul was Yui’s idea. Misato’s position could even be considered planned as Gendo May have calculated that she could become a motherly presence when he inevitably had to summon Shinji to pilot Unit 01. Gendo is just shady and calculating enough that he could very possibly have planned that out too. Such a good character because goddamn, he makes my toes curl.

      And if you're going to then say "why can't the males take care of them, then?", Then you'll have to explain their totally freely-made choices, and the maternal instincts that nature gave them to birth and nurture children in the first place.

    A Human Work owns actually - it might not advance the plot, but I just love the atmosphere and character moments in the episode. I would definitely argue it’s a very important episode that shows the lengths NERV is willing to go to remain positioned as humanity’s last hope, and you should be asking yourself why that is. On the first watch I could kinda take Misato’s perspective at face value, that NERV just has the only tech that works and Jet Alone is a dangerous waste of time: a successful test would divert resources from what’s proven to work, and the sabotage can be viewed as an ends justifying the means kind of thing when the fate of the world is at stake. On later viewings, I could see how she was manipulated to defend NERV’s interests while the real goal of the conspiracy remains hidden from her (and from most other characters, and from the first-time viewer) and I got a sense of the layers of the stuff going on; with Ritsuko more in on the conspiracy but still being hella manipulated as well, all to serve a certain purpose (and a hidden agenda WITHIN the secret conspiracy etc etc.) I can see why people rate it low as it doesn’t have an Angel battle and on the surface it could be seen as pointless because things end up basically the same, plot-wise, as they were at the beginning of the episode, but I think it’s one of those episodes that really rewards on rewatches and is definitely an underrated gem. So yeah I agree it is first class worldbuilding!
    As for Magmadiver, I skip it more often than not. Not hating on it, it just doesn’t do for me what I want the Eva experience to do for me, if that makes any sense.

      MagmaDiver didn't bother me and I laughed at a few parts but I lost my shit when Unit 01 jumped down. I know, I know, Plot armor and stuff, but I was expecting a smarter resolution cuz A. Should Asuka be shaking like a motherfucker if Shinji climbed down the cable/grabbed onto it while falling? And B. He got down there REAAAL quick. Magma slows your movement too ya know. But whatever. It's not the weirdest thing to happen

      Magmadiver theme music alone prevents this episode from realistically being the worst.

    I loved this episode because we get to see the relationship development between Shinji and Misato. And most of all, the ending to the episode was really wholesome. Sometimes that’s all you need. Just a heartwarming, smiling Shinji.

    Magmadiver was alright; not the best action but it displayed the peak of shinji's and asuka's relationship, before everything went downhill.

    Jet Alone is probably my 2nd favorite non-human being in all Evangelion after EVA-01.
    The EVA behind the angels' slaughter and the true hero are the best.

  • @justanotheryoutubechannel

    Honestly I really liked Episode 7, and Jet Alone. While it’s walk cycle is fucking stupid, looking more like one of those meme-worthy titans from Attack on Titan S2 than a big mech, I really enjoyed the episode and seeing mankind’s other attempts at fighting off the Angels rather than wasting millions of dollars of UN military equipment or using the Evangelions.

    too bad we never got to see a fully functional Jet Alone working with the Eva units, that'd be a fun bit of "what if?"
