      Noe Nauda I may be a little late with this response, but when I was starting out I had a similar issue. I found that doing the jumps first at a trot would give me an approximate area where the horse would take off. As I grew as I rider I could figure out a pattern, where the horse I rode preferred to take off, when to shift my weight, etc.

Then go into 2-point again. Do sequences for several turns around arena. Excellent to help get the feel of a new horse.

    But last week i went over my first (official, haha- Rebecca took me over a few unscheduled poles, and I let her becAuse it was awesome, even without stirrups- I think I started earning her respect that day, haha, she loves to jump! ) cavaletti, and it was AMAZING! I just need to (REALLY) work on my timing and position now!

    • @Nimeariel
      @Nimeariel Před 4 lety +6

      Giving impulsion a few strides before the jump can encourage a horse to keep moving forward. Whether that means getting lighter in your seat, giving an extra nudge or two, a cluck/kiss, a small kick (or big, depending on your horse), or a tap with a whip or crop a couple strides before the jump- doing this will help keep the horse moving forward and not give it a chance to stop before the jump. Just look up, straight ahead, don't even look at the jump, and ride like it's not even there. As soon as you feel the horse's legs get ready to lift off the ground (a few feet in front of the jump), go into your half-seat/two point until you feel all four feet touch the ground again and it starts to ride off again. A horse shouldn't halt completely before a jump. If they do, though, just sit up tall, encourage the horse forward, and go slightly into a half-seat when you feel it start to jump, assuming the jump is short enough for the horse to clear from a stand-still. Anything shorter than the horse's knees is easy for them to clear at a stand-still, and anything below their withers but above their knee may be difficult but entirely possible for them to clear. Anything taller than their knees, though, or their belly, really, you should circle back and try approaching it again to minimize strain.

      Get a dentist to check your horse's teeth. If it's not the teeth, try being more gentle on the reins. If that's not possible, and you're not already trying a basic snaffle bit, try that. Those are basically the least harmful bit and most horses don't mind it. Even with rough hands, a bitless bridle can be bad and harmful to a horse, so just be mindful.

One thing to note though, when going over the jump and staying in your 2-point, DO NOT fall forward onto their neck as they land- try to keep your balance/weight centered over their back/hind end so they can pick themselves up when they land. I was watching show jumping over the weekend and so many riders fell on their horses neck and caused it to stumble or have a hard time recovering after the jump (landing heavy on their front end, not necessarily falling down) that they'd lose time trying to get back onto to all fours off their hind end.

      If you're nervous and your body has tension your horse will feel your tension. Leaning forward when your horse is going to spook will not be helpful. Don't lean your body forward and try to sit deep in the saddle. You have to be patient when approaching a jump. Just before a small jump come off the saddle just one inch, with only the slightest fold at the hip. And when you land sit back immediately. Don't grip with your knees.

A small jump, and your hands really shouldn't move too much up their neck. A higher jump and maybe somewhere between their withers and halfway up their neck. A very tall jump and it should be as high as you can reach, really.

      Any yoga helps immensely, especially pigeon pose. That one has helped me so much!
      Just Google "yoga for tight hips/horseback riding" and you will find plenty of exercises that help!
      It has made all the difference for me! Good luck! 👍🐎💞

    All the things! I am also new to jumping and position is hard, speed control is hard - she races at the jumps (though that could be me leaning forward and/or clenching). How about rein length?

    • @Nimeariel
      @Nimeariel Před 4 lety +1

      Shorten your reins as you approach the jump. You don't want your arms sticking straight out- you still want some bend in your elbow- but you want your reins short enough that when your hands reach up the horse's neck, you still have some contact and the reins aren't flapping in the breeze. But as you come back down, let the reins slightly out of your grip back into normal position or a slightly longer position so you can gather them back up for the next jump.

I've thought about writing blogs but I don't know how to get started with that.... there's already TONS out there; what more would there be to say? Plus, like, sometimes I KNOW what to do and how to coach it, but my body doesn't always want to cooperate- you know? :-) Good luck with your jumping! Maybe when you get confident you could post some videos on your channel!

    The most difficult thing for me is pushing my butt up to the pommel of the saddle causing my legs to swing back and also casing me to over fold..I originally came from an eventing barn and switched to a hunter barn and I got lots of bad habits from the hunter barn now I’m switching back to the eventing barn and it’s so difficult for me to get my position right again 😩

    I really struggle with staying straight. My trainer is always telling me to lean back but I've seen so many pictures where riders seem to be leaning forward and I cant shake that mental picture. Leaning back doesnt make sense to me.

    • @Nimeariel
      @Nimeariel Před 4 lety +1

      Maybe you are over-leaning forward so your instructor is trying to get you to sit up a little more. So by over exaggerating leaning back, even if it feels weird, your instructor is trying to train your body to feel where you should be.

      Lisa Foster I had that problem when I was first started to do canter work. What helped me was spending a lot of time on the lunge line with my instructor and practicing those transitions in two point, sitting and without stirrups. It takes time to build up strength and balance, but You’ll get it! I think the key for me was learning this all on the lounge line so you can focus solely on your form! ❤️

    • @elisehermann6094
      @elisehermann6094 Před 4 lety

      pariah mouse so exciting!! I absolutely love a neck strap and ride with one almost every day. You can even make one fairly easy from left over pieces of tack leather. Also, I would start in two-point, grab mane, get a feel for the canter that way, then start to learn to sit and follow. You’re hips will go in a forward, up back motion when in the saddle. The Harder part is maintaining correct contact in canter and not pumping with your arms - but on the lunge all you have to worry about is your leg and seat and once that is solid can worry about contact later. :) happy riding!

    Just a quick observation leaning knuckles on the neck of horse is not a good idea. If horse trips or move head up it can unseat you/your balance, keeping hands slightly above the neck is much more professional and safe.

    When you realise you’re horse is a 4 yr old half trained tb cross, and will buck when you canter, so jumping is impossible
