I’m mexican 🇲🇽, and Im hearing this strong attitude symphony in the middle of the night in the southeast jungle (of my country) with earphones and thunderstorm ⛈... muchas gracias ☺️
Ola Hermano, France here. I love being able to get some kind of connection through music. Another kind of jungle here (Paris suburb) but I'm discovering this beautiful work with earphones too. It's very hot here, and we're having storms since a couple of days. I hope you're in a good and safe area of your country and enjoying life as much as you can. Cheers,
Sarrusophone! If you check out the score, and listen closely, you'll see and hear an instrument that's maybe unfamiliar: the Sarrusophone, part of a family of instruments made by Gautrot and named after a Bandmaster by the name of Sarrus. They are metal and fingered like a saxophone, but played with a double reed, and made in *nine* different ranges. They were meant for military bands to replace the too-quiet orchestral double reeds. For the most part, they did not take hold. The only one that really had any kind of run was this very lowest one, the contrabass. It was a brief trend to put it in orchestral music, from roughly 1890-1920, and then disappeared, permanently for the most part. Besides this tune, Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice contra solo and parts from early Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky utilized this instrument. It's not your imagination, it's a little harsh; part of the reason you don't see them. Still, it's cool to hear someone faithful to the composer's wishes. While the parts are today always played on contrabassoon, in this recording it's the genuine article! Bzzzzzzzzzz
I've studied on Dubois counterpoint manual, and I must say that reading his comments and examples I got quite the impression of a rigourous and scholastic man. Dubois was the proud son of the well established romantic musical palette, and to that expressive framework he held firmly. So it is not surprising that his music feels a little behind its times, but absolutely well constructed with really nicely interwoven themes
Our deep appreciation for CZcams and for those who find and post all of these beautiful works! I especially appreciate the pre-WW1 composers and those who, even if they continued to compose after WW1, did not succumb to dissonance.
Warren Malach well said but I m more tolerant of spice
I love the homage to France around the 35 minute mark. This is a wonderful symphony deserving of more exposure, and a wonderful performance. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Kuhlau, friend, ¡¡¡YOU ARE THE CHAMPION OF THE CLASSIC MUSIC!!!
@@Franciaeregimaxima A joke ?........... ;-)
These piece demonstrates that there are some many other notable composers from this time period that are just as good as known composers and gives the finger to people who believe that the romantic and classical periods were just composed by a few decent composers.
Another enjoyable piece by a composer who I had never heard of before. I'm also pleasantly surprised by seeing the first painting by Monet that I like.
Yes,about time Monet pulled his finger out.All his other stuff-pure rubbish!
This picture is far from being the best one by Monet. It is dark and heavy when all what Money did was light and full of light.
Il you enjoy dark and heavy painting, have a look at Redon.
The impressionists suck.
Utterly marvelous!
Took a little time to unfold, but Dubois took me to being amazed.
This is a very enjoyable symphony, the composition of an older composer which I believe reflects the Romantic era rather than the early 20th century in which it was written.
I agree with you.
I have noticed the major change in music styles pre WW1 and post WW1.
Curso superior onde? Talvez estudamos no mesmo local
The second movement sounds sometimes like Borodin or Rimski Korsakov. Beautiful work.
Inexpressibly beautiful. For a permanent belle epoque.
Please no commercials during the performance.😒
Mmm I just love a good ad right in the middle of a climax 🤦
Yes, me too. Just past 20 minutes and already had 2 wonderful adds. Perhaps Dubois' music would have been more popular if he did not add to many adds in the score.
I like to climax also ... NOT with an ad...
Impressionism music? Here and there, eventually - but clearly there is also some Saint-Saens, Bruckner, youngs Hindemith and Sibelius - briefly, apassionate "musique d´expression angoisée". A note for 2nd movement, reflecting the path of Debussy. Overall, quite a gift - a revelation. Merci.
Nice
Again a marvelous discovery. I know Dubois' organ music, but nothing more. I am smitten with this beautiful symphony!
Gran bell'inserimento,complimenti.

-names his symphiny Frech
-sounds like Richard Wagner

PS - Sorry, speaking of Dubois without referring to Berlioz would be elementary gross negligence.
French music is at its best when it is French, not German for example

Well, it's better than "The Last Words of Christ." And also much of his organ music.
Pleasant, worth listening to, but not remarkable.
Just like most of Dubois' organ music, which is his best-known oeuvre. It's an interesting coincidence that the conductor is the son of one of Europe's finest organists.
