My favorite portions of Jung’s excerpts were how individuation involves the family, and specifically acknowledging mistreatment by one’s closest loved ones as universal, necessary. “The boring family drama... Only a fool is interested in another person’s guilt. The wise man is interested in his own guilt, so he can learn from it.”

What this yt video effectively depicted of Jung’s idea, for me, was to emphasize the restorative quality of investigating myself-my defenses, my guilt, my errors-and the consuming quality of examine another’s guilt, errors, defenses. To grow as an individual, I must regard myself as self-caused and not a victim of another person’s-or anyone governing my life-sins.

I cannot remember which book of his I was reading recently but it mentioned that it is necessary to give yourself over to a "mentor" or some sort of system first as a point of reference. Be it the family, church, whatever. From there you can identify the good and the bad and make your changes in yourself from your experience.

1. Your current condition is where you start, don't wish things had been different or expect others to feel guilty, on the path of Individuation.
2. Unlived life generates addictions, ailments, anxiety,... Is self - destructive.
3.One must choose a real-world endeavor that's challenging and intrinsically fulfilling to be able to overcome inner drama.
4. Everyone must deal with the conditions of life, whether they individuated or not.

These four points are priceless! Each builds up to the next till the crescendo of the final one. Said from a place of awareness, hope, action, reality based and taking responsibility. Only the matured could fathom such words.

The individuation process is analogous to spiritual alchemy, "many are called, few are chosen". Because of the sheer amount of pain and work this entailed, Jung didn't believe the vast majority of people could accomplish it. The first step is to acknowledge the perils that lie ahead and to face them with resolve and humility. Thank you for this video.

Sadly, the book to provide the direct reference is packed up in a box, but here's a quote from Gregory Shaw quoting Kingsley's book "Catafalque"---which is where you can find the direct quotes from Jung about his thoughts on individuation in the index. This is a quote from Shaw's review of Kingsley's book on Jung and Corbin, "....although individuation is the quintessential myth of Jung’s psychology, it is almost never experienced because no one can bear it. Individuation is the surrendering of the personal to the impersonal, and precisely what Jung experienced it to be, the death of his personality. Jung explains that individuation is a total mystery; the mystery of the Grail that holds the essence of God. According to Henry Corbin, Jung saw “true individuation as becoming God or God’s secret.” Put simply, individuation is deification". If you're interested in reading the entire book review, Google "The Cry of Merlin" Gregory Shaw.
Its not that they cant accomplish it, just isnt part of their soul path yet. Needs more lifetimes of duality and ego, they still have much to learn there.

I am alternately reading and listening the same book. I have covered up until ML von Franz. Took interest in it mainly because of series of dreams that I wished to properly decipher and the book is full of insights 🙂

I almost have to listen to the videos twice as I sometimes get too distracted by the beauty of the paintings. I often have to back the video up!
Painful times suck but in them is opportunity. The thoughts, feelings, fantasies that erupted in those moments can be extraordinarily valuable. If this suffering can be held, the tension of opposites, then something new can emerge - the transcendent function.
I've learned through his teachings that often a non-rational solution is required when reaching the apparently unpassable.
I've came to the point in my life where I tell myself "I accept my flaws, but I choose to make improvements." And "resilience is greater than perfection."
All in all, those affirmations helped me realize that I will always be a human being. Regardless how hard I work towards making better decisions. As long as I'm able to recognize what I need to work on, it's all good. I rather fight for for a better tomorrow, than complain about problems I'm dealing with it and not do anything to improve my life.
Suffering is completely evitable, Pain is absolutely not evitable; suffering is a choice, because unfavorable disposition might make the person suffer from problems and solutions alike.

I can't measure how much the principals of this channel have benefited me. 2 months ago I had 7 tooth extractions and am now getting partials (replacement teeth). By allowing myself to experience the pain during that period, I've discovered an important strength within which enables me to meet the bleak uncertainty of life's realities.
Of course...(Antibiotics and pain medicine were most helpful as well.)

Often I have seen interpretations of what Jung expresses oversimplified and taken out of context. This is generally done by a group/culture which is overlooked by mainstream academia because of the "spiritual magic" these folks are also associated with. Thank you Academy of Ideas for giving a clear and concise summarization of Jungian ideas which will hopefully give more credibility to the existential thinking of Jung. Looking forward to more videos with this continued level of brevity and easier to absorb cadence.

thank you to who is making this channel! been through a lot these past years. moved around the country and lost my religion, started a new creative project, dropped out of law school. i’m discovering who i am, who i was and who i can be. reaching deep into the potential of what i am. when i look bad at pictures of myself from a few years ago i don’t identify or even feel like that was me. in some cases this scares me cause it’s like well if i can change so much from then what if i never settle into my identify? started going to see a psychologist as i’ve always been pretty neurotic and starting to feel like i can understand my mind and how trauma and past influences my feelings. these videos are so great to look inward and understand myself more. i’ve got a long way to go but glad to be on the journey :)

I had an experience lasting a few years in which I was physically torn down to skin and bones. I ate on my hands and knees because I couldn't sit or stand much. At one point I broke a bit lol and I think I actually tried to get away from the pain, there was nowhere to hide. That was when I made my first saying like a mantra, "if this is the price I pay for life then I'll pay it everyday". I'm a simple guy and easy to trick I suppose, my next mantra was " I don't feel yesterday's pain". Thanks for this upload, up until now Jung was just a name to me.

What I find amazing is how you refer to so many different works. Jung's complete collection of works is a true jungle and one can only imagine how many hours of reading time go behind a video like this. If you were to make a video on how you prepare these videos, I'd jump on it, even if behind a pay-wall.

This stuff on this Chanel has blown my mind. I’ve been going through recovery from alcoholism and unconsciousness. I’m in my second year and I never imagined that I would feel so awesome coming back to life. I used to have so many problems, I was stagnating, and I never thought I’d be able to solve any of them. I had 99 problems when I was drinking and when I stopped, 97 of them went away. I no longer take any psychiatric medication, am no longer depressed or suicidal, and feel like I’m as whole as I’ve ever been since a small boy when a lot of terrible things happened.

It was maybe the anxiety I experienced from it all that pushed me in the direction to discover myself & these concepts that I never put words to but understand them by feeling wholeheartedly. This is the single most impactful video I have ever watched. Or maybe I was in the need of it.
What happens when you try to follow the path of individuation and find yourself lonely and misunderstood? When everyone around you seems to be stuck on autopilot mode, wasting away their lives. When you would like to have partners to go through the path of self actualization but everyone around you seems too distracted with banality. What happens then?
Go alone.
Alone with god.
You're not individuated if you feel lonely.
The two iust dont go together. Individuation automatically rises a person above loneliness.
I disagree with both of these comments, respectfully of course. Though being able to be alone with your thoughts is a healthy part of life, the human psyche is not designed to be alone for extended periods of time even if it is voluntary. I can only hope that if you truly a pursuing the path to individuation, that you will inevitably make choices that guides towards others who think alike. Indeed, this may take months, or even years to occur, but I think it is reasonable.
It also depends on your stage in life. If you are at college/university, then there are definitely in the right environment to find those who think the right way even if they are few. If you are in high school, perhaps less so. Loneliness is part of the journey. Identifying and attaching yourself with someone or a group is the opposite of individuation. The process is about connection and identity with the Self. Jesus in the desert is the first example that comes to mind.
I find listening/reading Jung interesting, thought provoking and insightful.
In discussing Jung ideas and thoughts I have found it is easier to focus on the concept of individuation as 'doing what I want to do for me' and either not thinking or focusing and even ignoring the concept of growth through wisdom and by acting in mature, wise and moral ways.
I am older and I STILL have lots to work on.
