  • @challenger2ultralightadventure

    I built a very similar top barrel for my workshop wood heater. Only I near filled the top barrel with pipe, leaving 1 inch spacing between pipes. Enclosed the back side with a 4 inch hole for the input pipe from a medium size fan, to feed air into the barrel heat exchanger from the back side and hot air out the front. I found that I needed 15' of chimney above the top barrel to pull a draft, and the unit is amazing at how it heats my entire 1400 sq/ft workshop in the dead of winter. Outside it can be -35c, and in the workshop I'm in a T-shirt. The air flow means no cold spots, and even heat from floor to ceiling.

    I have done this but had used more and larger tubes. With only 6 tubes I would have placed then on the upper half of the drum as that is the hottest part of the chamber and would be the most efficient use of your energy. I recommend putting the top outlet on the opposite end of the drum from the inlet, and for internal turbulence have the outlet side slightly lower than the inlet. Note - you must have the chamber completely sealed to do it this way or you will have exhaust gas seeping into your living/working area. Good job Cody, thanks for sharing!

    @5:45 just to clarify, when you add the fan you go from free convection to forced convection. Conduction would be if you made physical contact with the barrels themselves to transfer heat. Whether forced or free, convection is basically just the conduction of heat from the metal drum to the surrounding fluid (air) then from that fluid to you. Please note, this is all based off of my memory of my heat transfer classes and may not be word for word definitions.

    A couple of tips: When you`re drilling with the hole saw, use the adjustable torque settings to keep the drill from twisting your arms off. When welding the tubes, just tack them and place the barrel standing. it is much easier to weld horizontal than vertical.
    Thank you for all of your awsome videos!

  • @Markam248
    @Markam248 Před 4 lety +1

    Word of advice. A flat (horizontal) weld is better for novice welders. Tack the pipe to the barrel then stand the barrel on end to weld. I am looking forward to seeing the complete stove.

    Neat thing about hexagons, there are 6 equilateral triangles in one and all of the sides of these equilateral triangles is equal to the radius of the circle that they are located in. So once you draw your circle, take the radius of that circle and start walking it around the circle and you'll end up with a perfect hexagon.

    I owed an older small commercial box version of the heat exchanger concept. It went in line with the stove pipe so it could be used with any wood stove. One feature which was important was a plate on the inside attached to a plunging-pulling rod which the pipes ran through. As you moved the plate back and forth by pushing and pulling on the rod, it would clean the creosote buildup off the heat exchange pipes from the inside. Because it was so efficient at removing the heat from the flue gases the creosote would condense on the pipes and had to be removed daily. The heat you could recover was amazing. Above the exchanger you could put your hand on the stove pipe and it was only warm to the touch. I had to wait to turn on the fan until after the unit heated up to get a good draw going first. I highly recommend using a heat exchanger of this type with your wood-stove.
    (My unit finally met it's demise when a roommate stoked a roaring fire in the wood-stove and fell asleep without turning on the fan. When I came home the unit was glowing red hot. The heat was so intense, the heat exchange pipes sagged so the cleaning plate would not work. In a short period of time, the creosote buildup was so thick that the unit would not pull the heat out of the flue gases. To solve that problem, I would recommend a thermal coupling switch which would turn the unit's fan on when it reached a certain temperature. Mine was older and did not have one. Also, the unit was welded so there was no way to access the inside or replace the tubes easily. ahhh well.)
