Thank you to the NSF crew for doing these discussions. Shuttle was my favorite ever and the retirement almost make me loose my passion. Thankfully SpaceX and Blue brought it back. This is a very beautiful thing to do, keep it up please!

Hey Sawyer, it's SME not MSE. It stands for Subject Matter Expert. DOD loves to use that term. For example, I'm the SME for the SATCOM shop where I work because I'm the shop's Site Lead.

What a time when you have to choose between crane and a spy satellite and it's not an easy choice.

The hammerhead crane was on top of both A and B. They later were removed because it was cheaper to rent a portable crane when needed than to maintain the crane on the pads.

You skipped over that the 51D crew was actually supposed to fly in March of 1985 as 51E. The TDRS satellite had a problem so they combined 51E and 51D. The 51E/D crew were originally going to fly Discovery’s 2nd flight in 1984 as 41F but got bumped when 41D had the abort on the pad. They used the same patch for 51E/D. 41F would have been the 13th flight and Discovery’s second flight, that’s why they had the colonial flag and the stars above and below Discovery’s name.

While the video of STS-51D is playing from about 56:10 there is some sound from some other show behind it. It's not just you, there is not something playing on another tab ;) (I think from some VHS over dubbing that was not correctly erased or something)

If you're on the latest version of the youtube mobile app, there's this handy feature whereby you can magnify the video picture by 'pinching' at the screen with two fingers in an expanding motion.
You can also do this in 'fullscreen mode' aswell.
