    Excellent video! I would be more jealous if it wasn't 80 degrees here in Wisconsin - np beach though, and only did a 58 mile ride due to a strong wind.

    @sgsgent - Yeah, The Modjeska grade is a pretty mean 18 - 20 % for a half mile or so... (after you just did the mile or so of 5% tp 10% on Santiago Canyon from Cooks!) but the zig zag dowhill is so awesome! the video does not even do it justice! We only had to do a short bit of Cannon to get up to Taft. Not too much. :-) But we did that climb up Modjeska after we had already done 50+ miles... so yeah, that was a calorie burner!

    Thanks, Glenn. The cancers I'm experiencing now are the result of all the careless exposure to our Florida sunshine when I was younger. I notice Dan rode fully covered...smart young man! That's how I ride, too, although it may be too late to help much.

    Thanks for the video. I've covered everything (except the Modjeska Grade) riding with the Orange County Wheelmen and Bicycle Club of Irvine. Mostly on an upright. Now I'm on a trike, so I was particularly interested.
    Great film. Thanks again.

    @Greengate777 - I was actually thinking more like pilot to tower control! ;-) "Kkkzztt... Red squadron you're cleared hot for your run Bzzzt" / "Rodger that." It's really is cool to use the radios because everyone in the group can talk and hear everyone else even if you are strung out single file or have lots of street noise. Sorta like a party line on wheels" You can't hear it in the video, but in that segment we were trying to decide what a group of trikes should be called: a NERD of trikes?

    Hi Patricia, (not sure why youtube is not letting me directly reply to your comment.. so i am just adding a comment hoping you will be alerted to see it) . Yes, recumbent trikes and recumbent bikes are great for anyone whose backs and shoulders and necks can't handle a conventional bike. They are very comfortable for extended distance riding! Check out some of my other vidoes... they feature a number of different brands and models of trikes and bikes that my friends ride. Best bet is to try to find a place to test a few different trike brands because everyone finds their own preference ... Catrike, Terratrike, I.C.E., HP Veloteknic, Greenspeed, Trident... there are a lot of brands to choose from. There are a few trike riders that I have seen videos from who are in Las Vegas. I don't know of any stores in Las Vegas itself, but one BIG place I know of is not too far... www.utahtrikes.com

      BTW... did a quick search on google for recumbent trikes and las vegas... found Southwest Bikes in Las Vegas. Not sure if they stock many recumbents to test ride but they do talk about them on their site. you might check them out. southwestbikes.com/articles/buyers-guide-to-recumbent-bicycles-pg162.htm

    Does anyone know how the ride is uphill compared to a "normal" bike?

    • @TrikeSquadron
      @TrikeSquadron  Před 10 lety +2

      Uphill, a trike is generally slower because you can't stand on the pedals and they weigh more than a road bike. But they are usually geared like a mountain bike so you just gear down and spin the pedals. I find it easier to climb steep hills on a trike than an upright because you dont worry about ballance, you just keep pedalling. and if you slow down or need to stop to rest, you dont have to unclip your pedals, you just start going again. then of course when you get to the top... you are gonna go down faster than most upright bikes due to weight and aerodynamic advantage. ;-)

  • @TrikeSquadron
    @TrikeSquadron  Před 12 lety

    @Trikesalot - Yeah, I usually am pretty good about using sunscreen (every so often I forget and get a bit of a burn). Not sure if Dan wore the long sleaves and pants for sun protection or just out of habit because he is so used to riding in much colder weather back east. But eather way I am sure it helped a bit. We had a nice temperature day that day so it was probably not too warm for him. But in the summer it gets darn hot out here! ;-)

  • @greendeane1
    @greendeane1 Před 9 lety +5

    I reject the geriatric or injury focus for the trikes. They simply great machines FOR ANYONE. Peddling them off for just the old and ill is an upright bikers excuse not to consider a superior means of transportation.

    • @TrikeSquadron
      @TrikeSquadron  Před 9 lety +3

      Green Deane Yep. it is funny that one of the often asked questions I get is "why do you ride that?" or "do you have to ride that instead of a 'regular bike'?" ... usually I answer... "because it is more fun, more enjoyable, and I can ride further on it than I can on a conventional bike". I think they are usually waiting for me to say that I have some kind of injury or physical handicap. Nope.

    • @MrGtownjake
      @MrGtownjake Před 8 lety +3

      +Green Deane As a friend of mine once said in reply to "What's the matter, can't balance on two wheels?" (Looking at his road bike the up at him) "What's the matter, can't afford three wheels?"

    • @jonahbert111
      @jonahbert111 Před 7 lety

      I agree but to me they are too wide to go where I want to go. To be reasonably stable at rest how wide do they really need to be? 12 inches, 16 inches? Then the two wheels (or something, inline skates?) need to be able to tilt like a bike at higher speeds and corners, at the operator's discretion. And it needs to be steerable. That is asking a lot I suppose, but one way or another it is do-able.

      Daniel Rose, you should try a velomobile. I own a Strada type from Velomobiel.nl. Great fast fun. Not cheap, but worth every penny. I also ride an ICE Full Fat Trike for inside the city. Those fat tires make me jump up and down the curb. Potholes and steep speed bumps? No problem.

      dregerclock Yeah, it was Mike wasn't it? Don't want to make this response too long but I'm getting one of these trikes to get back in condition. I have cerebral palsy but in 1984 I finished the Montreal Marathon. I used to cycle 50 miles per day on a three wheeled bike with only 2 gears. I've got a long way to go to get back in condition as I'm now 52 not 22 but you've inspired me with your videos to do something about my present condition. I've been to LA 9 times in my life and if I ever get back there again, I'll look you up to go riding with you. Be warned I'll be back in top form when I do look you up, so you stay in condition because I will look you up. All my best wishes, Stuart

Now, I need several months of training on it to get back into top form and save up air fare to get to California, but I will eventually be showing up to go riding with you. Stuart

    What was the average speed?
    I really enjoy watching your channel, I am so close to purchasing a Catrike 700, my biggest concern speed, will be able to keep up with my old riding buddies, I am riding much less these days on my traditional road bike, suffering big time from stiff neck, can only tolerate rides of about 1 hour averaging 16-18 on a good day with some back wind, any insight greatly appreciated...

    • @TrikeSquadron
      @TrikeSquadron  Před 9 lety

      it will take a little transition time to let your body and muscles get used to the slightly different pedaling position, but you can do some good speed on a Cat 700 or even an Expedition, fitted out for speed. (as in lighter high pressure tires) Generally trikes will still have a speed disadvantage over bikes because they are bigger and more weight, and three points of contact with the road. but a catrike 700 with the right engine (you) can be speedy. You might consider looking at recument bikes like Highracer / Short wheel base models built for Speed. Bacchetta, Carbent, RANS, AZUB, Optima, CRUZBIKE all make great high speed two wheelers that can rival road bikes but with the recumbent position that will benefit your neck strain.
