After a rough few days in Sierra Leone, we have made it onwards to the next West African country of Guinea (Conakry).
It's been a wild 2.5 days here so far, from the challenging roads to the (once again) disgusting corruption and bribery that we had to deal with. But we made it, after 11 LONG hours of driving 150 miles, to the capital of Conakry.
Initially, we had a great time exploring the fish market at sunrise and then getting secret access inside the 2nd biggest mosque in sub Saharan Africa -- but then things quickly turned bad when thousands of policemen (armed with AK47s, helmets and bullet proof vests) stormed the streets in preparation for the riots which have been destroying the city.
We quickly ran (literally) back to our hotel and called it a day. We didn't leave the hotel anytime afterwards.
This region of the world is tough to travel across, especially in your own vehicle. At each of the dozens and dozens of police checkpoints, we are always pulled over to show our car papers/insurance, and even after we do correctly, the corrupt police will find ANY reason to pick on us (often times, making up some random law) until we pay them off. It makes me sad.
BUT I HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS (in case you missed yesterday's video)! THE SIERRA LEONE GOVERNMENT SAW MY VIDEO ABOUT US GETTING SCAMMED AND THEY WENT TO THE BORDER TO ARREST THE 3 GUYS AND NOW THEY ARE IN PRISON! One step closer to making this region a safer place to visit for everyone.

As a Guinean living abroad I was looking forward for this video but instead it made me me feel sad and so disappointed. It sucks that you didn’t get to see the real beauty of guinea. For many years now the country has been in some political turmoil due to ethnic clashes between the fulani and Mandingos tribes. I pray that Guineans realise that we’re all family and stop the hatred. And Drew I hope that you come back one day when the country is safer and explore places such as fouta djallon, nzerekore just to name a few.

There are constant trade wars and economic instability in weaker economies compare to wealthier west african countries. These government institutions are paid by Tariffs and border bribes. Ive seen another youtuber travel through west africas border mess. There were Truck drivers that said they were held up on the border for weeks unable to pay bribes and back ups.

I’m Guinean myself, but I grew up in the West so I act and dress different. I was there like 3 months ago and I had to deal with a lot of bs. Everywhere I went they’d call me a foreigner, even though I speak the language and look the same. The police always made up stuff just to get extra cash or just waste my time. They even found it necessary to comment on how I dressed. Luckily we have family friends who have been working at the police for ages. They accompanied me everywhere I went. I don’t think that I would’ve lasted alone. But if you look past all that Guinea is a beautiful country with mostly beautiful people! It’s just the government that has failed the country and its people, which is sad.

I was in Conakry 25 years ago! I took a small canoe from the port you showed to Ile de Rume and camped in the village there for a month studying traditional dance and drumming. Then stayed in a village inland which was very beautiful, natural And undeveloped. It was an incredible experience and I didn’t realize how lucky I was to be under the care of an African man who dealt with police at check points and showed me the best of Guinea!

Having been there three times on business, there's never a good time to visit West Africa. Corruption is a culture and it's a shame because the locals are beautiful people.

P Don't be an idiot. French colonization in West Africa was different. All they did was take the resources whether human or inanimate back to Europe. The countries you mentioned have high incidences of poverty and have had several wars since French occupation. After you have gone to every country in the world Drew could you maybe consider going back to Scotland but go to the north and to the islands. The scenery is some of the best in the world and there are many old castles and villages. Also there are golf courses everywhere so you’d love it.
