- Cleaning out ash from the WoodMaster 4400 Outdoor Wood Boiler on a cold January day. With the temps being as cold as they were I still only needed to fill the boiler with wood twice. This is why I love my WoodMaster 4400 Outdoor Wood Boiler.

Long live wood boilers!
Hey Dan, sweep up all the wood pc. on the floor and put it in your outdoor stove. Keep it clean.😁
I was thinking the Same thing, Square Nose shovel. Scrape the Floor and toss the Scraps in the Back of the Firebox. Push the Coals to the back and clear out the Front.
Rainy Sunday in southeast Indiana. Fires pretty mild since it’s about 45° outside so feels like spring. My outdoor boiler at our old house(now a rental) sprung a leak in the jacket near the flue about two years ago. They’ve been burning gas since at a premium.
Grabbed it from my rental with the crane the other day. Gonna cut into it and see what it’s gonna take to repair and revive the ‘ol girl. Renter wants stop paying for LP and I can’t blame him. I may video the journey and get it up on my channel.
Some of those boilers are unreal how well they heat multiple buildings, they almost work to well. When you compare what they consume to what they put out, they're worth every bit of the investment if you're into firewood.
The key is burning seasoned wood...otherwise you're burning wood to dry wood so it can burn...lol...and then you can end up using a lot more. The other great thing is along with heating the house it heats the hot water...yes, totally worth it in my opinion as well. 👍🍻
I will never need a boiler but I find it so fascinating how y’all in the “ Frozen Nawth” handle your business. Impressive.
the wh1te g0ld makes men😂😂
u in the deep south? Im in nc and have had a heatmor since 2005 and love it. best money i ever spent. If i was in florida or had natural gas i wouldnt need one but this is the way to go with propane as the other opition or electricity
Love my Central Boiler. 11 years and only 2 little issues. Make that 3, I need to change the burned out lightbulb! 😆 Heated basement floors, house as warm as I want and all the hot water you ever need with 10-12 full cord of wood. Run mine October thru May in Upper Michigan. The cost to do that with propane is insane, even with cheaper propane years ago. Take care and stay warm!
Nice videos
Oh the good ole boiler vids!!! Lovely video and so good to see her roar some more!!!!
Let's hope your afternoon is as good as your start to the day....lol...one game away!
Great info...Love learning about boilers and the benefits. Very interesting
Hey Shifty. Nice tips to ensure everybody will : Stay Safe, Have Fun & Be Cool
I'm sitting in Eau Claire at the HI Express en-route home, it's 11°. Yesterday, in Minnesota it was -4°. My son and I enjoyed having a little winter the past two days. Leaving Dallas Monday afternoon was not what I was expecting for their area, but roads improved around Oklahoma city. We look forward to getting home, just north of OWB in Ohio. We might be able to enjoy a few cold days there was well this weekend.
Boiler is working good!
Im really considering figuring out my local county code to put in a boiler here at the cabin. Id love to get that mess out of my basement that wood creates 😂. Nice video showing the days progression of the fill up
Just put one in and see if anyone says anything...let them come to you...lol
Very informative video Dan ❤😊🪵👍✅
Interesting video 🇬🇧
Two refills in a day is awesome!
Hey Shifty, kinda wondering why nobody has asked why you don’t just sweep the area around your boiler. The amazing Amanda must do all the sweeping around your house. Lol. Have a great day!
Oh I've been asked about it many times....there's actually a few reasons that at some point I might explain. I will tell you this, that even if there wasn't a single thing on the floor, I don't like leaving embers burning in the woodshed. I've had embers that I've stepped on & thought I stomped out light back up. And when each time you throw wood in the boiler you have debris potentially fall off it there's always a chance...lol...so I find putting a nice layer of snow down just puts out any ember that falls when I clean out ashes. 👍
Ashes to ashes dust to dust cleaning the boiler is a must. 😊
Stay warm out there. It calling for -24 tonight. Definitely be putting some good wood on tonight before bed. Keep up the good work.
Yeah it looks like it's gonna drop down & get COLD!!! Thanks!
👏🏻Dan, an informative video. You gave great advice about embers and such around the stove. Entertainment videos can be educational and a reminder of safety for our daily routine. 🇺🇸👏🏻👍🏻
Thanks Larry...appreciate your comment. 😀👍🍻
Nice Hackberry a lot of ash 💪
Good year for a boiler.
Pretty good only having to fill up twice a day. Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Yes indeed, was thinking I might have to put a couple pieces on late afternoon. Was surprised to get almost 12 hours out of those pieces.
Great video Shifty! Amazing how much wood you can put in the boiler at once👍👍
Thanks. Yeah you can get a good amount of wood in them. Good way to get rid of the big ugly pieces...lol
Our last cold snap was brutal with the wind!! It just never stopped!! I think 13 below F was the coldest it got. Now it’s warming up!! Enjoy watching the boiler videos. None around here as not enough firewood around to run one. Hope it warms up for you soon!!😃
8 degrees?? We call that heavy sweater weather in Manitoba...... It was -16 and warmed up to -9 by 11am. What is interesting is that very very few people around here living on small acreage have boilers.... some larger farms with livestock and barns do but it's not a normal thing.
If I lived in the northern states with your climate, I would definitely have a wood boiler. Here in Tennessee I just can’t justify it with our milder winters ☹️ in the meantime, I’ll just live vicariously through your videos 😅😅
do you have natural gas or use propane or electric? im in the middle of NC raleigh area and i can tell you they are worth it if you use propane. now natural gas no way. but here propane can go as high as 3$ or more a gal. I heat 3100sqt foot log home and water with my boiler. Im also gas dryer and cooking and water heater although the boiler preheats that water. mine paid for itself in 3 years. it would take longer now but they are more efficient also now. only thing is you gotta do a tad of work
Pretty dang cold shifty , always like seeing how you run the wood boiler. Not there yet but, my inside wood stove does pretty well. Stay warm BK40ty Dan.🪵🪵🔥
The temps are gonna drop down even lower today & this week...I'll try to send it out your way...lol 🍻
That's what I really miss about my boiler. But it's nice to have a wood stove in the house for the actual feel of wood heat. With your respirator on you look like someone from Star Wars hahahahaha!! Joking aside that's very important to wear one so you don't burn your lungs from the heat of the ashes. Not bad with as cold as it's getting.....but it's going to get colder now. Stay safe my friend
Great boiler video, Shiftski! I can watch the boiler videos all day and all night. 🪵🪓🪵🪓🪵🪓🪵🪓🪵🪓🪵🪓🪵🪓🪵🪓
Thanks....by the looks of the upcoming week & the temps ya might just get another one....lol
good job And yes that mask makes your head look big , john
Hahahaha...it's not easy making that mask look so good!
Love the boiler seems like honest heat. You might consider if ever in the market again for one the Central Edge boilers. The ash is so easy to clean out. Nothing comes out of the firebox itself. Ash is just scooped out (takes maybe 3 minutes) from below the reaction chamber.
I bought the smallest model and it keeps my 4800 sq ft house from using propane for heat anymore. OMG the prices of that before i got the boiler...made angels weep. Stay warm buddy! Love watching the vids over the last couple years :D
If the time comes that I need to replace this one I'm not sure I'd want a gasification model or not. I have so much wood I wouldn't want to burn 30% less....lol....just kidding.
@@Back40Firewood hahaha good point!
Why not just sweep up the debris and burn it up?
You should get a good leaf blower. STIHL husky echo…. I use mine way more than I ever thought I would.
Thanks for the info. Besides editing, what else did you get done? What are your favorite top 3 Utube channels to watch?
I spent a good part of the day with little Boss Man and Farming Simulator on xbox...hahahaha
Nice demonstration, Dan.. granted, 8 chunkspieces wouldn't fit in a wood stove, all at once, but we would have to look at the wood stove at least every 3 hours..
Yep, that's the big difference....load it up and leave it all day....hahaha
Cut part of my storm damage box elders yesterday. My neighbor will take it for his boiler. The big question is will it be this year or next year's wood... He's currently using fresh slab wood. Mostly red oak... Green.
You just can't convince people that water doesn't burn... But who am I kidding... I have about 4cord of wood and I don't hear with it.
My stand, camping and doing 3gallons or so of syrup goes through a bunch.
🤘
I’d love to add a boiler one day!!!
You might need to get one just to get rid of all that wood you're making...lol...I know that's one of the main things I'm glad I have this one for....hahaha
@@Back40Firewood it would definitely help get rid of a bunch of it! The hot water is something I really want from it!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors that is a huge savings for us...cuts the electric bill in half and I don't need to be concerned with those who enjoy 45 min steaming showers....hahahahahah
@@Back40Firewood oh yah every time Rachel fill the soaker tub I cringe!
If you can ever get some sassafrass, it burns away to nothing. And, it puts off lots of heat. I have quite a bit of it on my farm in Eastern Ky. and I love it. The only problem is it doesn't get really big. Just a thought...
Nice wood boiler you have there , mine is a Central Boiller *CL5036 and it uses a damper , not a blower . I feel like by "Pushing air into the burn , causes premature log life and forces more air into the unit than is needed for combustion , adding to its efficiency losses ( pushes heat out the stack ). What are your thoughts on a forced combustion air intake as opposed to an intake volume dictated by the combustion required method that the damper system uses ?
Good video, Dan.
pc
I think both systems work great. With the forced air ya might get a quicker cycle of set point temps. This actually has in the back where the air/smoke goes out it has to go through a chamber that brings it back to the front, then back to the rear, and then out....so hot air being blown out still has to give up some of it's heat to the water jacket.
Not hard to “be cool” where you are at! Nice burn times on the OWB.
lol....that is a good point this time of the year! Ha!
Hi Dan. Im from Ireland and I watch a lot off your stuff. I would really like to see if I could buy a boiler like yours to heat our home. I can't believe that you are heating your house in freezing weather with snow for 24 hrs with under 20 big pieces of hardwood! Can you tell me what make and model the boiler is?
I'm not sure the regulations that are in place over there would allow for something like this. This is a WoodMaster 4400 model. I'm in a few 'Outdoor Wood Boiler' groups on Facebook and there always seems to be conversations from people across the pond and how they wish they could have boilers like this over there.
Absolute zero is -469.67 degrees Fahrenheit. You miss spoke Shifty.
lol...no I know. It was a joke/play on words to describe it was really, really, really cold...hahahaha. Actually was wondering if anyone would catch that and know what absolute zero was....lol 👍🍻
So as a tech guy. You don’t have that thing hooked up to your Wi-Fi and your phone to see the temps?
lol...nope not yet and I don't wanna be on my phone more than I already am. Gotta keep my screen time down.....hahahaha
@@Back40Firewood that’s ok Amanda has that option on her phone. It’s called texting you from the couch to tell you to check the fire lol.
Have you ever had it go totally out??
Only a couple times when we were gone for a few days. If the water temp drops below 120 the blower shuts off...and then I have it set so if the house temp drops below 68 the gas furnace will kick on. The water pump continues running on the boiler so the gas furnace will in a sense back heat the water.
I am not sure why you took ashes out. There was not that many in there.
Do you havea fireplace?
Nope...just the boiler.
5F is -15C
Good choice…Makita
Well actually it's the Menard's knock off brand MasterForce....lol...still gets the job done I guess. hahaha
Would you ever be willing to burn wood that isn’t seasoned to do a comparison in a winter burning seasoned wood vs wet wood? See how many cords of each burned in an entire heating season.
Edit: maybe not a whole winter but a couple weeks. Have two piles the same size with similar sized wood, but one wet and one seasoned. Just a neat comparison I think.
My father in law burns all wet wood all winter long in his hardy.
The guys that I know that have boilers do not burn seasoned wood, they only burn green wood.
I burn mostly green wood, it does ok with a good cosl bed. But dry is much more efficient.
🧹🧹🧹
Why don’t you just sweep up the floor first?😁
Instead of mucking about with snow on the floor - why not just brush the crap out the way?
Took a piece of galvanized pipes and built a rake out of it using keys and 45 and nineties and what I do is use a hoe to bring all my ashes and colds forward and then I rake my calls to the back and pull out all the a** It leaves me 90% of my calls
That's a great idea with the keys to make a rake....very cool and bet it works great. 👍🍻
Great idea with the keys! are they car keys or house keys. The fact that keys have a rough side makes it easier to grip the as*
I don’t know if you know what absolute zero really is?
lol...yeah I do, and that was the joke...a little play on words to see if anyone caught it. 👍🤣🍻
Why don't you just sweep up the mess.
Why wouldn’t you just clean up the stuff that could catch on fire when you clean out the ashes? Seems like common sense.

Huge waste of wood. Hate them. The most ineffective heat there is
Hmmm I'm not sure getting a 12 hour burn on 8 pieces of wood is a waste of wood. I think many burn green unseasoned wood in their boilers which ends up using more wood and that is how they can seem like a waste.
What would you have him do?? Not burn it and let all his split wood rot?? I am with Shifty on this one! Dry wood is the only way to go and I burn pieces almost that large to fire my basement wood heater. It is a Riteway 6 and has been in use for over 35 years. The only thing we have ever done to it is replace the door gaskets every two years and twice a year clean the chimney. My wife was actually complaining yesterday afternoon that it was 79 degrees in our basement! HA HA
Not when the Wood is Free....
To each their own, I absolutely love my boiler, might use a little more wood but the convenience and safety of it totally outweighs the inefficiency
If you put the lid on tight you can screen the ash out when it's cold and save the charcoal for cooking
there is no reason but laziness the way that floor looks
Well...actually there's a couple other reasons...lol
