  • Kaiju No. 8 was highly lauded in the manga community and at some point in the story fans started to say it fell off. So I read the manga and I have some opinions to discuss in this video.

I liked S1 of the anime, but by the latter half of the season I just felt that it was pretty generic and I couldn't stop myself from just seeing it as a way more simplified version of AOT (In fact you could say it's like if the whole story stayed as how it was in AOT S1 before the whole Marley revelation). That's not to say it's bad at all, but I was definitely getting a bit bored of it and people were gassing it up saying it was peak fiction. I really liked Hoshina from what I've seen so far and I think there's a lot of promise with the side characters in general which is why I picked up the first 10 volumes of the manga (Haven't read them yet). As for Kafka, he's a cool MC but I don't think it's enough to be a big selling point like everyone makes it out to be. The first thing you hear about this anime is that it's different because the MC isn't a teenager but is an adult in his 30s. If they leaned into that more in any way then I think it'd be worth talking about, but besides for his relationship with Ichikawa he acts exactly like your normal shounen teenage protagonist. Wouldn't say it's an S tier show but it's nice and I think most of the critiques come from peaking overhyping it in my experience.

I disagree with Kaijuu no. 9 not being interesting. He has depth, a lot of it. He has very werid relation with other kaijuu and thinks that defense force using kaijuu's power is fundamentally wrong. There are a lot of teasers of him not being the actual antagonist at all (and pointing at the company that develops kaijuu based weaponry). He is inhumane, but not in a cruel way, his cruelty seems to be more of an afterthought, with the singular exception of Kafka, towards him he seems to have a personal thing going on, which is even weirder. He is also completely fascinated with humans, which just adds more to the confusion. He is weird, he is supposed to be hard to understand. But his motivation is not to take over japan, it's to retrieve all of kaijuu-based weaponry, at least that we can gather based on his statements. And he wants to pursuit knowledge. Taking over japan is just a result of what will happen if he does succeed at his goals. At least that's what I see in current manga stage. It's an early stage of the manga after all.
I hope that I will not be completly fooled and this arc is not in fact the final one... it would suck. But if I'm not wrong, I see a big potential here. Another thing is Kaijuu no. 8's (not Kafka's, the parasite's) hatered towards other Kaijuu that was still not build upon. There's a lot of potential here, and I think it's at it's mid point at best (just before it's shibuya so-to-say, even chapter numbers wise it's similar)
If anything, the biggest problem with Kaijuu no. 8 currently is relatively slow publishing cycle.

I know there is a lot of potential. That’s why i want the world to be more fleshed out. It has people thinking that this is the final arc due to a lack of it.

@@wavelion320 yeah, if it were to be final arc, this would really be sad tbh. But I don’t think so.
