interview a Japanese who is 90 years old. She'll say that living long is also about keeping active. But my theory is that it's not about the blue zones. It's not about oleic acids and phenols.. it's about eating food that grew on soil rich in volcanic minerals. Hawaian people should live very long, but they don't because they've been invaded by the US food industry and are eating junk.

My aunt would go in back yard, break the neck and boom on the table. But there was tons of fresh vegetables, greens, olive oil and potatoes. Everyone worked hard and shared food. Most older people drank goat milk. My great grandfather lived to 105 and my grandfather 101. My dad came here at 18 to the United States and he only lived till 80(Parkinson’s and heart disease). 😔

Dr Gundry, I purchased the Longevity Paradox and was a bit dissapointed seeing I purchased because of the FMD section, my disappointment was at the fact that you didn't break down the macronutrient percentages or the calories that you should ingest, it seems a very loose interpretation of the FMD. Your video are informative though so thanks for the videos but the book didnt really teach me much.
In the book it says eat as much macademia as you want MCT oil that it also recommends 3 tablespoon a day = 345calories already and so you only have a few hundred calories left to play with and so we see recipes of veggies and more oil, surely it takes you over the amount of calories that the FMD diet requires you to stay under, in essense the FMD is a calorie restricted diet but there is no mention of how many calories the person ingests on your 'FMD' type diet, we also don't know what the percentages are of carb/fat/protein and so I don't think it is the FMD, to be frank most people could have created similar recipes or a diet plan in 20 minutes but none are the same as the FMD unless you work out the macro-nutrient percentages and stay with caloric restriction guidelines of the FMD that Valter is talking about.
Forgive me if I'm wrong it's just that I expected more, I kind of expected the real FMD diet, not to say your version will not do a good job also.

Why the gundry haters? So much tribalism. Longo has done great work for the realm of anti-aging, but I feel his value add is moreso in the space of calorie restriction and fasting, whereby Dr. Gundry's is across multiple avenues of efficacy (cardiovascular, alzheimer's, autoimmune). Dr Gundry is a testing obsessive type, and tweaks and constantly checks biomarkers and labs in his patients, this is a very insightful thing to do. So yeah, he's changed his own stance on a lot of things over time..including lectins and supplementation, and this is VERY rare in the world of MD's and researchers. I'm sure neither guy is 100% right and there should be a dynamic tension and synergy between the two worlds.....but tell me: who looks healthier? Long or Gundry? lol

May be that explains why Gundry looks more healthy. More important, Dr. Longo is using specific scientific research to show results. And Dr. Gundry is basically referring to his personal experience and observations that "Nightshade" vegetables and beans are bad for you.

But most people are not aware enough or lucky enough to discover what is causing the inflammation. In my case, I never had any skin problems until a year ago, when I started walking my new white German shepherd in the cold weather and snow. Next thing I know, I got Skin problems (eczema, dermatitis ). to me, it feels as if it is inflammation. But all the dermatologist wants to do to to treat it with cream or with laser therapy....!!!..So, I'm confused if it is exposure to cold weather or it is something I'm eating. Such is life...!!!

Words like "disastrous" make it seem that water fasting is not a good approach at all, but if one can do it easily (I did my first even 7 day water fast a few months ago and it was incredibly easy, which surprised me).
Does he think that a 7 day water fast won't bring the full range of beneficial effects, or that it will cause some adverse effects that this fast mimicking diet will not?

    • @johncasoni6437
      @johncasoni6437 Před 6 lety +1

He explains it here, the FMD was strictly developed to avoid non-compliance by patients and doctors (who worried about starvation with chemo patients) and to retain safety as some went off and did their own improvised diet instead of water only. Moreover, he references 2 clinics that do water-only, Truenorth in Santa Rosa, CA and Buchinger Clinic in Germany. Read his book and also you might like The FastDiet.

First I should say I greatly appreciate Dr. Longo's work. He's brought information about the benefits of fasting to millions of people. He's made a tremendous contribution to the health and well-being of thousands of people.
With that said, there are some problems with the FMD, which at some point will need to be addressed.
Re: COMPLIANCE. Dr. Longo says that an actual fast was "a disaster for compliance" back when he tried it --- and I believe him when he says this. But nowadays hundreds of thousands -- perhaps million -- of people are doing water-only fasting, following Dr. Jason Fung's recommendations, and from all appearances, not having any issues or problems with compliance. So compliance isn't really an issue for many people.
Another issue is ALLERGIES. The FMD contains food that many people are allergic to, such as nuts (if I eat a single nut, I can't breathe through my nose for the next week or so.) This has been raised many times, but I've never heard him address it.
I do understand why, as a doctor, he can't recommend water fasting, for liability reasons. But for those of us with nut allergies, who can't eat his version of the FMD, we have no options but to either do water fasting or improvise our own fasting-mimicking diets --- or never fast, which is much more dangerous than doing a water fast.
Saying that if we are allergic to the FMD, we should fast in a clinic, is a nice thought, but for many of us, the nearest clinic is a couple thousand miles away :) So perhaps not quite realistic.

(Do you still think that "the yolk of the egg is the best food ever invented"... I wonder?) Two things though: I believe it should have been clarified that what Dr. Longo means by "vegan" is a whole foods plant based diet. Vegan junk food may be better than regular junk food, but still junk. Also, putting aside vitamin B12, DHA and EPA (for which you can simply take a supplement) there is nothing in fish we cannot get from plants (except from mercury, cadmium, microplastics and a wide arrangement of environmental toxins).

@@SciSciToys Wow that's quite a story my friend. I'll tell you mine:
About two years ago I was feeling in the worst shape of my life. I was not sick or anything, but I had been for years missing feeling young and energetic... remembering once in a while all the things I was able to do just 10 years younger. I thought I was simply getting old!
In short, after some intense reading and sorting through nutrition information online, I realized that a Whole Foods Plants Based diet was something I just needed to test.
I intended to go in little by little but actually moved quite fast... in like a month I was eating full vegan and also exercising pretty hard, as I wanted to see if the diet would fail if I strained hard my body (since according to some it is CRAAAAZZZYYYY and nobody can be sustain by just eating plants).
Well, I dropped 30 lbs in like 6 months or less, and just plateau at a BMI of around 22. Today, after 2 yrs eating a WFPB vegan diet (which I find really delicious) I can run a half marathon any morning and regularly hit the gym pretty hard... I simply feel great! As the mater of facts, I got a blood test done in May and all was perfectly fine. Just a match for the incredible energy my body is capable of putting out pretty much anytime. I feel like in my 20s while in my 40s and it is awesome!
Regarding erectile disfunction: It might be a sign of Cardiovascular disease, which as such, it could be reversed by eating a WFPB vegan diet. Check the research of Dr. Caldwell Esselstlyn and Dr. Dean Ornish. They got amazing results from their research. I'm sure you will enjoy getting to know the details... I think Ornish got very good results with a not fully vegan diet. So, you know, it may not need to be extreme, but certainly very low in animal based foods.

@@vicentecueto8152 An inspiring story indeed, the problem is that I have many problems or co morbidities, man, whilst in this period of lockdown |i heard on the news that the more comorbidity you have the more dangerous it is to have covid19 and so \i made a list and found \i have 36 diseases or ailments and made a goal to fix as many as I possibly could or the most dangerous ones, here are some gallbladde polyps which |I have to have scanned once a year cause if they grow to more than 1cm there i a change they can become malignant, Ive hecked online and there is no remedy to shrink them just taking out the gallbladder and I really dont want to do that, fatty liver (this is easier to fix by losing weight) Obese or borderline, Im 113kg but my ideal weight should be 73kg and been this way for 30yrs, GERD/Chronic acid reflux because of hiatal hernia and have to take PPI's to supress acid in my stomach (Omeprazole 20mg for 26yrs, I try tapering to 10mg but can only go a few weeks before I have to go bak on the normal dose again), Depression/Anxiety and been taking Paxil for 26yrs (I have tapered down from 20mg to 5mg in the past 7yrs), EDS Hypermobile syndrome which means my shoulder joints can dislocated easily and connective tissue lack collagen (genetic) at school \i was called the double jointed guy, when I was 19 I attempted Press Behind Neck weight lifting exercise I did 2 sets of 10 reps of an easy weight of 20kg maybe and felt ok, at 1am my dad had to send me to the hospital because of excruciating pain within the shoulder joint, I have scoliosis, I have Spondylosis in the Neck diagnosed by MRI and others and so with this list I think if |I go to my doc she'll pull her hair out, apart from these various ailments I dont have diabetes/high cholesterol, high blood pressure so Im not totally screwed yet and so I think now at 53yrs of age I need to start fixing those ailments, especially the dangerous ones first.
I feel happy when I hear others getting better but then feel sad when I look at myself and to be honest I haven't fully applied a vegan diet, when you say WFPB diet do you include a small amount of meat/fish or completely vegan, low fat?
Did you implement intermittent fasting? Can you tell me what you eat in an avergae day please, thanks ;)

I love your work. I fast 12 or more hours daily. I am vegan and I am a 55 year old woman. I am just wondering how much protein is the right amount for my age? I am getting about 20 to 23 grams a day. Sometimes with vegan shakes. Is this to much? Thank you! Karen Hogan

That is too much protein. Just eat whole foods and you will get what you need. Read How Not To Die my Dr Michael Greger to find all the latest studies and you will not have to listen to is fool, Grundy!

Some comments reflects confusion as to: why the Water Fasting Diet is not simpler and better than the Fasting Mimicking Diet ? The response is already provided by Dr. Longo that the Water Fasting Diet works great under clinical supervision. But the problem is when people do it on thier own, they may decide to improvise and make it ineffective or end up in trouble. Otherwise, Dr. Longo raised no objections to Water Fasting.

Translate what Longo says. I am Itsliano but he does not speak to the layman. Scientists have to speak in a way that anyone can understand. I am a paramedic am have many specializations and when I talk in pubblic I make my speaking simple...Dott. Grundry please make your interlocutor understandable....thank you.

Why do not you write about poisons of plants that also cause trouble for the body?
    tannins ?
    oxalic ?
These two are seen in organic urine tests + LGG

Starving your body for a few days but then trashing it for many more days is not a sane approach. It is better to have a good healthy diet for most of the time. The healthiest macronutrient strategy that has been totally proven in mice is low protein low fat high carbohydrate. As far as the perspective of implying limiting starchy staples, that is a terrible disservice. The two most important foods that someone should eat is starchy staples and vegetables. Because vegetables are so volumetric, appearance-wise it may look like you eat a lot of vegetables, but calorically, most calories should be from the starchy staples. Ideally, you should eat no process foods, no meat, no fish, no dairy. Ideally diet should be whole food starchy staples, vegetables, some fruit.. For an insurance for now, add one or two tablespoons of ground flax or chia and avoid other nuts or seeds or use a small amount of algae oil supplement. Vitamin B12 should be the only other supplement.

I think I would rather believe Dr Longo after having done 25 years of research perhaps you should go and have a look at the scientific evidence before commenting on something you obviously know nothing about.

+Annita .H no it is not unscientific , our diet should be about 60% carb for best longevity, by carb i mean good carb not junk sugar of course. But very low carb diet like ketogenic or paleo diet is very bad ..

    • @christopheausruff

@@dou40006 most of the population in the west is pre-diabetic or has type 2 due to wrecking their insulin system with high carb diet and almost constant eating (every 2 hours i gotta have some carbs to boost my flagging energy levels!) poor little pancreas is worn out trying to get those glucose molecules out of your blood with insulin - it never gets a rest! And then your body cells get fed up with being constantly asked to stuff more glucose in until they refuse. Insulin is the fat storage hormone - typical result fatty liver and viceral fat, belly fat ( even if you look thin on outside). Since the 60s dietary advice meat and saturated fat consumption down, carbs and grains up, obesity and type 2 diabetes up .... interesting correlation. Proteins and fats are essential nutrients but carbs are not. Your liver can make glucose if you need it. Ketones burn more cleanly than glucose if you're worried about oxidative stress. A low carb diet gives your system a rest and within days you get off the carb rollercoaster and reduce cravings. I would guess a low carb diet would have been the norm in a pre agrarian society ie most of our history. These days fruit and even a lot of vegetables are bred to be super sweet - ie more glucose & fructose. Seed oils we eat started out as lubricants for machinery 100 years ago! Stick to natural time honoured fats!

Dr longo promotes a plant-based diet. Dr. Gundry promotes a standard American diet. Big difference there. Dr. Gundry to anybody that doesn’t know already... is an opportunist that has no science behind his diet views.
