  • LAST HINDU QUEEN OF KASHMIR - KOTA RANI
A foreign invader from Tatar, better known to the history as Dalcha, is reported to have brought large scale death and destruction to the people of Kashmir in 1319. He indulged in large scale loot, arson, massacres sending shivers down the spine of the people as barbarism unleashed by him was never seen by people before. It surprised and baffled the people greatly.
At this stage, three claimants appear on the scene. One a scheming and clever Shah meer who was appointed as official in the palace by king Sahadeva himself. But for tactical reasons he is reported to have withdrawn from the race thinking probably his time was yet to come and leaving the field open for another man.
Second, Rinchan Shah, a prince from Ladakh who had been granted political asylum along with his followers by king Sahadeva. He too had proved his credentials by helping the king to retrieve the situation from external aggression which had earned him considerable respect. This made him fairly popular there.
Third, Ramchandra the Prime Minister and commander in chief of the armed forces, who too was in hiding at the time of aggression by Dalcha. For some time Ramchandra ruled Kashmir and Rinchan helped him in defending Kashmir from the marauding Dalcha’s force, but when Dalcha eventually died in a snow storm, Rinchan killed Ramchandra to assume power.
To earn local support Rinchan appointed Ravanchandra son of Ramchandra …. as administrator of Ladakh and also proposed marriage to Kota Rani. Kota Rani’s subsequent decisions reflect her burning desire and intentions clearly. She begins with Hinduising the minds of foreign rulers by using marriage as an act of diplomacy and this is very clearly revealed in her follow up actions .
Kota Rani had to accept Rinchan’s proposal. Rinchan also employed Shah Mir as a court official. Since Kashmir had only Hindu and Muslim population and Rinchan was a Buddhist, Rinchan wished to convert to Hinduism, but Pandit Devaswami rebuked him as Rinchan had killed Ramchandra. Shah Mir convinced Rinchan to convert to Islam taking the new name Sadruddin Shah and becoming the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir. He renamed Srinagar - Rinchanpora and built the first mosque in Kashmir. Rinchan or Sadruddin ruled from 1320 - 1323 . He was assassinated in 1323 by rebels. Sadruddin had a son Haider with Kota Rani
Kota Rani did not want her Muslim son to become the ruler of Kashmir. So, after his death she married her brother in law Udayanadeva -brother of Sahadeva, her absconding first husband. Even though Udayandeva became the king, Kota Rani practically governed Kashmir. She was very brave, shrewd and an able ruler. Kota Rani had two sons. Rinchana's son was under the charge of Shah Mir and Udayanadeva's son was taught by Bhatta Bhikshana, her prime minister . Kota Rani was grooming Udayandeva’s son to become the ruler after her. When Mongol warrior Achalla invaded Kashmir, her husband Udayanandeva fled to Tibet, but Kota Rani took over the reins , appointed Bhatta Bhikshana as her prime minister , she led the Kashmir army and eventually defeated Achalla. Decision of Kota Rani to choose Bhatta Bhikshana as her prime minister did not go well with Shah Mir.
The shrewd Shah Mir was waiting all this while for his opportunity to strike at the throne. Shah Mir pretended to be sick, and when Bhatta Bhikshana - Kota Rani’s prime minister visited him to inquire about his health, Shah Mir jumped out of his bed and killed Bhatta Bhikshana. Subsequently, Shah Mir led a large section of the army in revolt against Kota Rani. She could not handle this betrayal and with the Hindu court leaders refusing to help her, she had to concede defeat. After her defeat, Shah Mir proposed to marry her. While initially her survivor's instinct made her consider Shah Mir’s offer, a life full of upheavals and repeated betrayals ultimately drained her spirit and made her realize the futility of the situation and she chose to stab herself to death . According to the historian Jonaraja, she committed suicide Her death in 1339 paved the way for the establishment of Shah Mir dynasty rule in Kashmir.
With the death of Kota Rani, history witnessed the end of an era. In her lived a very courageous and a diplomat par excellence of her times. She weathered every storm with poise and emerged stronger after every event. But misfortune never allowed her a peaceful life, it haunted her at every step. She had to fight anarchic conditions prevailing in the state at that time when foreign invasions and intrigues were a common feature. At every stage she succeeded in reassuring the people about her capabilities as a ruler. She has secured a place of prominence for herself in the history of Kashmir.

One can only imagine the conspiracy and intrigue of that time and schematization of Shah Mir. and the betrayal she had to face at every step and also the short sightedness of her courtiers .... so tragic and unfotunate that a prince from Ladakh also betrayed her for his short sighted ambitions.....It is akin to first war of inedependence of India in 1857 , when British fled the red fort and then they assembled and organized an army of paid mercenaries like Gurkhas and Sikhs to attack Delhi and reestablish themselves to the throne.. so Indian history is rife with betrayal and back stabbing that is why it was enslaved for thousand years. China has history of 100 yrs of shame but India had the same for 1000 years.... thanks to betrayals....

Please consider redubbing with louder voiceover and lower background score. Please also consider dubbing in Hindi. I am willing to share it with others. Thanks.

Must be a good video but audio/dubbing was very low/feeble and almost inaudible. Background score suppressed the audio voiceover.

Probably they were not weak but they used to fight wars based on principles (Dharm Yuddh) like not attacking an unarmed enemy, not killing civilians etc. but the invaders like Taimur Lang, Ghori, Ghaznavi, Babur etc. had no such principles. It is said that Prithviraj Chauhan forgave Ghori 17 times after defeating him but Ghori didn't when he won the 18th war. Still there were Kings like Bappa Rawal who defeated Mohammad Bun Kasim and chased him away all the way till Iran. There was Bajirao who never lost any war in his life which is an unbelieve feat. It's because of these Bravehearts that our religions are still alive in Bharat.
