Generally your mother is the person in your life who loves you unconditionally and looks out for their child's best interest (but not all mother's or families are the same) . But also as you said there is a measure of control, I love the line Mother will put all her fears into you. And obviously we all need to make our own decisions.
The song is depicting a relationship between an overprotective, overbearing mother and her son. Through her imposement of her fears and desire to control her sons life she caused him to isolate himself and metaphorically build "the wall" that separates him from others.
The Wall… I listened to that album and saw the movie so many times… it is deep.

Almost you can say these are the world's greatest band. The music really stands out. Listen to the album " Meddle" to get a good flavour.
The exhaling breath you heard at the very start of that song was the ending of the last song because all these songs on this album connect directly into each other. Mothers and fathers in most cases will try to protect their children from the outside world which means they will help build a wall of distrust in people outside of their families. In this case Roger Waters, the writer of this song was raised by his mother because his father died in the war before he could grow up and thus understand what it was like to have a father.
Never could understand the movie the wall by pink Floyd but love this album great album as well
Even though this song stands alone it's still just one act in the Rock Opera "The Wall". You really should take the time to listen to the whole album start to finish and even watch the movie which is only 9 min longer than the album itself, a real masterpiece of art. Peace/JT

Hard for me to give an honest assessment of the song since I know the whole story of the album. I don't want to give anything away. So, I will just echo what Scott said about every family being different.
This song comes from a concept album. You have to listen to the entire album to understand what any of it means. It's a long story.

Roger Waters Wall, his fathers death from the war, life growing up as a misfit in Society, building a wall very well known The Cold War Berlin Wall kept others out he too kept others out. Fay it is hard to get what Waters is saying without listening to the whole album it is a concept album on his life angry at the war that took his fathers life. Very deep❗️ 👍

i was like 12 when this was issued and btw "the wall" is also the literal fucking berlin wall.
