    Thanks so much for this video! I'm a new hunter and finally had some success. After half a dozen sessions with dozens of hours of looking and no quail, I finally found a spot! Missed every shot the first day, figured out what I was doing wrong, came back a few days later and got 3. On your advice, giving it 2 weeks before hitting it again. Thanks so much for the helpful tips!

    Good common sense my friend. The fact that you’re not a road hunter is a plus. I also like your Jeep. I don’t even live or hunt in CA. Next door in AZ and we have Gambels Mearns and scaled quail here in southern AZ. I’m new to quail hunting. Love Dove but it’s a short season. Rabbit is year long and I like that but quail are just the best tasting. Everything I shoot i eat so the sport element is a distant second. I love spending time in nature whether I shoot something or not. Thanks for an excellent video my long winded friend lol 😆

    Fine Video from knowledgeable and experienced hunter. Our state bird along with our state flower are wonderful symbols of the beauty and fragility of California's natural abundance.
    From my former experience in hunting Calif. Valley Quail he is on-the-mark and I learned some things too. I really respect DD for telling potential quail hunters the truth; 1) He mostly hunts w/o dog : e.g. quail hunting on public lands is hard work, 2) He is a great shot : e.g. quail hunting requires individual development (trap range), 3) uses 20Ga (was there a 28Ga or 410 in this vid?) : e.g. tight patterns (should) generally mean fewer wounded birds, 4) Respects the land upon which he hunts e.g. 'leave the land better than you found it', 5) Generally hunts public lands : e.g. these lands will remain open to the public if hunters hunt them, 6) has good knowledge on the habitats : e.g. is a responsible steward causing lightest footprint possible on that habitat and 7) knows when you can expect to win a chase with birds on the run e.g. do not needlessly chase birds so-as not to get shut out.
    If I were still a hunter I would like to hunt with the DD. The only thing I would add are details on; 1) more on hunter gun safety when going for birds in typical rough quail terrain and hunting around other hunters and 2) hunter's handling of the habitats and being prepared for the day.
    Thanks to you, sir.

    This is a great vid. I've had requests to make a similar video. Started on one using the google layers on caltopo to explain some of the scouting process and then they got rid of the google layers on caltopo and basically made what I had done not relevant. I laughed at some of the things you said in the end regarding etiquette. And agree with all you said there too. Every time somebody tells me to pick up shells because I don't show myself doing it the second I down a bird I think the same sort of thing. Must be one of those club hunters that goes out and gets planted birds over a pup with a double gun. Out on real birds you need to recover the bird first and come back for the colored (hopefully) shell later.

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113
      @desertdogoutdoors1113  Před 3 lety +6

      Yep. Without a dog, you gotta be focused on where that bird went down and go straight to it or you will probably lose it. Then go back and get your shells. I only get shells immediately when I miss. Folks who never solo-hunt wild birds or only internet hunt will never get this reality.

      Not my favorite upland pack. I use it for really long upland hunts because of the storage and hydration bladder capacity, but it has several design flaws. For one; the side pouches for ammo are too far back and its a PITA to reach back and get ammo quickly. The stupid "gun rest" features are useless and a waste of space (the shell pouches should have been in those locations). But it holds a lot of gear and water, has a great main pocket layout, is made out of super tough material, is easy to clean, and is comfortable to wear all day.

      #6 steel is perfect. Get the highest velocity you can. An Improved Cylinder choke is a good place to start; but you will need to properly pattern your gun, and it may like a skeet or Light-mod choke better. Every gun is different with every type of ammo and choke combo. Patterning a shotgun is like zeroing a rifle; it will tell you where the shot is going in relation to your point of aim.

      34:00 in the video. I recommend #6 shot for steel; try patterning with a IC or Skeet choke. for lead shot, I recommend #7 patterned with a LM or Mod choke.

    Thanks so much for the video, I was scouting for turkey this past weekend and ended up flushing maybe 3-400 quail throughout the day and totally wished I knew more about them. One question I did have is that the only shotgun I have is setup for turkey/pig/deer with a short barrel and a red dot, is that an acceptable setup for quail too? I know it’s not ideal but would love to know if anyone’s tried. Thanks!

      Take the red dot off, and pattern your upland shells with different chokes at 25-30 yards. Use the best patterning choke.

    I learned a great deal from this video DD, you are continually informing me of how to do the right and ethical way of hunting. Question, does it seem as if the BLM hunting areas are getting more abused now a days? I have found all types of shells on the desert floor from shotgun to rifle I don't understand either especially rifle brass. Just seems as though people are not appreciating the land like they use to.

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113
      @desertdogoutdoors1113  Před 3 lety +6

      I generally hunt in areas where people don't go in-mass, especially the "LA crowd". When too many people discover my areas, I move on to new ones. We have soooo much BLM land that I find new places every year. The target shooters are usually the bad ones, not the hunters.

      @@desertdogoutdoors1113 DD I'm located in the hight desert about 65 miles north west of Las Vegas I was taking my dog for a hike out in the wilderness and coming back to my vehicle which was parked about five miles from the road I witnessed a lady pull her car over take four bags of trash out and throw them to the side of the road. Apparently I did not move far enough away. By the way I see your wearing your Kenetrcks on most videos are they your favorites now.

    I always chuckle when a newbie asks ol' timers about their honey holes. That experienced hunter has spent his time and effort to find the best areas and he's not going to give away his secrets. Same thing with fishing locations, too much time to find them just to tell everyone else.
    A friend of my wife raises German Shorthair Pointers and we've quail hunted with her many times. It's funny, our dog training friends invite us to shoot birds because they're so busy with their dog training and handling. That works for everyone! The one thing I've learned is not to shoot the instant a bird flushes lest the bird is blown into an inedible mess. I use a 20ga but would like to add a nice 410 O/U one day.
    Enjoyed your video!

      I understand the work you are talkin’ about with your spots. But as a new hunter who knows absolutely no one who hunts. I’m just trying to make way and learn the ropes. Really off putting when someone just trying to get their feet wet. How hard is it to point someone in a general vicinity to get started. Appreciated this video as it provided info and concepts not many seem willing to share.
