Peter Pan 1960, Mary Martin restored

- This is the Peter Pan musical broadcast on TV in 1960 with Mary Martin and Cyril Richard. It is a delightful musical.
Mary Martin got her first great role in a Cole Porter show dressed in almost nothing but a fur muff, singing My Heart Belongs to Daddy. She was also the original Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, and starred in many other Rogers and Hammerstein musicals..She was an actor, singer, and dancer. This musical was created in 1954 with Mary Martin to be the starring role.
Cyril Richard, from Australia was a stage, film, radio, and TV actor. He even was on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera playing the comic lead. He is best known for his role in Peter Pan as the sneering Captain Hook.
The available copies all had a problem which apparently was on the master tape. Some of the alternate scan lines would slip to the left in a few scenes. This was removed by frame editing. The original was deinterlaced carefully and noise reduced with frame editing to remove difficult spots. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I'm 75, and remember watching this live on our 19 inch TV when I was 12, when Life was so simple, all my loved ones were alive, all my dreams were in front of me and unrealized. Thanks for the memories, and grateful to still be alive now.
Memory unlocked. We wore this tape out when we were kids. RIP Mary Martin 🙏
I felt that! We did too
I still have mine!
@@charlenekravec1461 no way?!
Yes, way, Peter.

I have the chills watching this. So many memories as I watched this as a child. I'm 37 years old now and still love this version. Haven't seen it in probably 20 years. Thanks to whoever shared this
I was in a Trance watching this now. So many memories attached to this version for me! I didn't even like the animated version I loved this one since I can remember! and still do! I can't even explain the weird nees da ja voo lol! WOW I'm 38 now and I think I was in 3d grade when I watched this!
I’m 39 going 40 and feel the exact same way
My grandma recorded it from the television probably in the late 80s or early 90s. So I had it on a recorded VHS and each commercial break had this soup commercial that I wish I could find
My mom bought me and my brother the vhs of this in the late 80s or early 90s. Definitely a trip back in time.
Watching hook made me come look for this film I'm 32 and to many memories with my grandmother watching this movie
I'm 34 and I used to watch this every day as a young girl. I may be too grown up to fly these days, but it sure was nice to visit Neverland again. ❤
I was born in 89 and this stayed in my vhs back in the day lol
My Dad, Joe Puma, was one of the musicians in this production. Every time Tinkerbell "speaks" that his guitar. I was in the first of second grade in 1960. I remember us all watching it
That guitar sounds an awful lot like a xylophone 🤷🏼♂️
@@mykeread or the piano like thing that does the dance of the sugar plum fairy.
Don't buy it. That was obviously no guitar.

I'm an 80 years young lady......and still full body goosebumps as Peter/Mary first flies into the room❣❣❣
If your name is Wendy, hold my hand, and fly with me now to Neverland!
I watched this as a kid, 30 years after it first came out. Now I'm watching it again, 30 years later.
Same!
20:06 here come the waterworks, pure nostalgia. I can smell my great grandmother’s house 😭😭
This brings back happy memories. I remember my parents taped it on vhs. I watched it over and over till the tape went bad. I feel so lucky I grew up when I did.
I haven't seen this movie since VHS was a thing. And yet I still remember the lyrics. How am i crying over this?!
I love it!
Always brings tears to my eyes.
@@chrishaines1677 Me, too. Especially when Mary Martin sings that lullaby towards the end.
Omg I still have the 93 virision this is my Peter pan as a kid my mom watched it in the 60 I watched it in the 90s and one day y my kid will watxh this and only this
This is blowing my mind! I'm 75. I remember the first time Mary did this play on TV! I remember almost every word of this, songs and script! How is that possible? I haven't seen this in 53 years?!
Man, John & Michael can sleep through anything.
That's what I'm thinking now as I'm watching this as an adult 😂
Oh my gosh…I grew up too watching this over and over since it aired. I was 5 or 6…..73 now and I just got the urge to watch again. So happy I found on CZcams. I did get to see Peter Pan on stage with Cathy Rigby. Also fabulous. I think I was about 27 28. Such warm memories watching this. ❤️
I am 73 also and I was right way before 1960....on a tiny black and white TV
I grew up with this. my family would gather whenever it was on. you brought back fond memories. Thank you for posting.
Me too
Me too😄
Me, too. It is still wonderful after all these years!
I remember this too. Thank u
I am reading comments of people who said they watched the 'tape' of this over and over. I am older and we had to wait a whole year t see it, as well as "The Wizard of Oz", but I have to tell you that I believe that made it 100 times more special for us. They were always the two most anticipated nights of the year.
Yes! The Wizard of Oz was worth the wait every year back in the early 70s. Even channel nine in Windsor Canada would show it. I’m from Detroit.
Yes!!! I'm a "millennial," but I remember getting this VHS for my 6th or 7th bday because I was obsessed with not just Disney, but Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. This was such a treasure!🥰 So thrilled to have came across this on CZcams- what a gift! I probably wore my VHS out, but my sis says it still works. I'd love to have a DVD copy just for a back up! Not much can beat times like these 🤗
I’m with you on that. Same here.
I never realized how old this was.
I first watched this when I was in kindergarten 1991. Then ended up renting this along with home alone from blockbuster video.
God damn I miss those days
So glad I found this low key tears. Makes me think of my late parents. Thank you for uploading this.
when you're a kid you don't realize just how old the classics are. You just absorb yourself in the story. I watched National Velvet dozens of times and never really thought about just how old it was!
I agree 100%. The memories it brought back are priceless. I feel so lucky I grew up when I did. Kids these days totally missed out.
My mom played this movie for me many times when I was kid. I'm so happy it's on CZcams now. My mom would've loved this.
I think I remember my mom saying "I want to show you something. " And we watched this. One of my first experiences with musical theater too. It enraptured me. I don't know if my mom ever revisited this performance aside from that VHS. A shame she's no longer around in this world. I'd have showed it to her if she was. Thinking of you Mom.
I'm 67 years old and first saw it 63 years ago,And I never get tired of watching it ❤
This production still holds up today. Doesn't look like "1960" as much as it does "1990", even Sesame Street has nothing on this "old" production!
And the Oscar goes to.....Cyril Ritchard! Sublime as Hook. This was an event from my childhood. We can only be young once. But we can be chid-like forever. As for me, I am still immature at 71.
ME TOO!
I'm 36 with a child like persona one thing that never changed being an adult is my imagination.
What?! We grew up?! I’m about to be 30 youngest one on here but I too grew up watching this as a kid thanks to my mom (born in 57’) And so will my children.
Me too! I have no shame in watching this again and again any many other Disney movies from my childhood. I love it.
Not referring to the fine Disney cartoon movie. This was the Broadway musical by Jule Styne, lyrics by Comden and Greene. NBC turned it into a tv special twice and aired it annually. Mary Martin as Peter and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook. CHeck it out. @@judypasqualone3819
Happy 63rd Anniversary of the TV showing. I remember watching this on TV. The date was Dec. 08, 1960, which was also my parents' anniversary. I found a copy on DVD, and just by chance, watched it on the 50th anniversary of the TV debut. It was also B and W, just as we saw it. We didn't get our first color TV in the household until the early 1970's
There was no excuse for marketing a B&W copy because it was on high quality laserdisc in 1990. The original broadcast was actually 1954, but it wasn't recorded on tape until 1960. It is possible that the DVD was copied from the 1954 or 1956 B&W kinescopes. While both showings were in color, video tape had not been marketed yet. The old kinescopes smeared the frames because the film was recorded at 24fps instead of the TV 60fps on B&W film from a monitor. It is now possible with advanced software to restore the old kinescope recordings to near broadcast quality, but in B&W. The 70th anniversary of the original broadcast will be 2024 (2024-1954=70).
I watched the original airing when I was 9 years old. I have always loved this version and
wished it were available again. Thank you! I wrote a fan letter to Cyril Richard ( The father and Captain Hook) and he wrote back and sent me a signed photo as Captain Hook! Such a lovely gesture to a child fan.
You are very welcome. The picture is a real treasure and a great memory.
I was 5 when this came on TV.
Must have watched this 100 times, back in the 80s!
I watched this ALL THE TIME as a kid. Never thought I would find it again 🥰
Im 17 but I watched this as a kid on a vhs from the thrift store I loved it:)
👍💖✌
Classic!
lot of people grew up watching it throughout the years, from the 60s, 70s, 80s,90s, etc. Myself I am 36 years old and grew up watching it in the early 90s, so around 1991 era.
Ive NEVER seen it look THIS good!
I remember watching this VHS every single day as a kid!! My mother got to play Peter Pan in a big theater and I insisted Peter Pan was a boy, so she bought me this movie. I just adore this version!! It all comes back like I never stopped watching it!!
I was fortunate enough to grow up watching this on good ol' VCR. Productions like this are absolute gems.
The BEST version of Peter Pan. Have been enjoying it over 60 years. A Classic.
Totally love Mr. Darling’s “She’s crying, what about me? Go on, coddle her. No one coddles me. I’m only the breadwinner, why should I be coddled? Why, why, why?” As I explained to my dad, “That’s the original PWB speech!” (PWB stands for Poor White Boy). It’s a phrase my dad jokingly likes to use when he feels that my mom is demanding too much of him.
I am so excited that I came across this! I was just talking about how my Grandma and I would watch this when I was young and she would let me stay up late and eat tons of buttery / salty popcorn that she popped on the stove (it was the best) and drink sodas! This will forever be my favorite version of Peter Pan. Rest Easy Grandma! We sure miss u and Grandpa so much .… 😔❤🪽🦋
I adore this movie so much. I grew up in the 90s and my mom watched it on live tv when she was a kid.
Watching this as an adult I still love it, but the scene of Peter pretending to be a woman (very Victor/Victoria) with Captain Hook, it’s beyond odd.
This is not a movie. This is a recording of the LIVE play. Each of her performances were live, the last being recorded, if not the ones before it.
Well, she was a woman actually
I used to watch this nonstop with my grandma. She passed in 2005 and I haven't watched it since. I'm 32 now and crying through the opening credits 😂 Thank you so much for this.
Much respect to you.
YOU JUST MADE MY WHOLE YEAR!!! Me and my brother wore this VHS out. I thought it was lost forever.
This is actually from a laserdisc version which essentially had video with broadcast quality. It is wonderful that it brings back good memories.
Same! I haven’t seen this in probably 25 years...
when i was a kid I thought the actress who played Peter pan resembled my great aunt Marie "sis" Smith .She passed away last week .Love you and miss you aunt Sis
for my own playbill of the broadway musical peter pan i made seven lost boys named curly tootles cubby slightly nibs twin 1 and twin 2. and cubby and slightly are liza's adopted sons and curly tootles nibs and the twins are mr and mrs dlarling's adopted sons.
I watched this tape all the time as a boy, always dancing and singing throughout the entire film
😍
I’m 43 and I still still remembered every word so I was up singing and dancing until til 6 am to this! 😂🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️💗
I was so excited I came across this last night that I had to stay up and watch it 😅
LOVED seeing this Wonderful Classic. I was 6 when I first saw this - and still at 67 as enchanted as I was then. Thank you for the remastering. Always , thank you Mary Martin , you made me believe ! marcia
I can’t get enough of Mary Martin.
Full South Pacific
And to think Billy Rose told her to go home. She'd never make it.
@@kallen868 Don't forget 'The Sound of Music'; when it comes to playing Maria, Mary Virginia Martin will always be the REAL deal.
Oh. My. God. This is such a blast from the past!!!! My mom played this for me all the time!!!!
Sitting here, singing every word!! Thank you so much for posting this. I recall seeing it in 1960, when I was 8, and every year after until they stopped showing it. It's time to have my grandkids see it and be filled with the magic and mystery as I once was!
Yes! It was only aired once per year in the early sixties. I was 4 years old when I saw this on TV for the first time. I was enamored. I wanted to be Peter Pan. I think I was confused because Peter was played by a woman, so I thought I could be Peter. My aunt made me my own Peter Pan costume and I wore it all the time until it no longer fit, like for 2 years. My parents bought the LP soundtrack to the movie, so when they played it, which was, much to their aggravation, I flew everywhere in the house, hopping from chair to chair to sofa to chair jumping around. I really thought I was flying. Lol. I knew every word to every song. I'll never forget that period of my childhood. Even my mom and my aunt still remember my facination/ obsession with Peter Pan! Captain hook really freaked me out, though. He was so creepy and scary to a 4 year old.
Yes! They would show this and Cinderella every year til I believe 75 or 76.
I can't believe I get to take my children to see this in the theatre in a few months. I remember watching this when I was my sons age , every day after school.
I was 5 years old when I saw this. My Dad told me years later that I barely moved during the whole movie.
I saw Mary Martin do Peter Pan with the Ice Capades in Corpus Christie, Texas in 1955 when I was six. The show brought the house down.
Love this Peter Pan. About 18 years ago I took my daughter's and granddaughter to see Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan in Cleveland at the Play house. It was also beautiful.
Sooo I wanna start and say I have adhd meaning I don’t remember a lot especially when it comes to movies when I was a kid. I have no memory from before the age of 5 now that being said my bubbie ( grandma) showed me this movie for the first time when I was 4 or around there. As I grew older I forgot everything except the hand show that Mary Martin did in the darling kids room. I remembered that one scene my whole life not knowing what movie it’s from and looking for it for years. Finally I gave in and asked my bubbie if she had it. When she pulled out Peter Pan I instantly said “no that wasn’t it” in the end I decided to give it a watch and that watch changed everything.. I had found the movie I was looking for for years and I wasn’t disappointed I thought of the year it was released and realized it was incredible. This has been my favorite movie for years !! And every time I watch it I become a bigger fan of Mary Martin. I also wonder what she would think of what became of the movie if she would be pleased with the results. I know almost every single line in this movie and can’t help but talk along and sing along with it. I’ve watched it dozens of times and have a vhs tape that I used to watch it on before finding this video. Can you guess my age? Bet you can’t. Because the only people I talk to and know is about the movie are 30-40 at least !. When my old teacher gave us a assignment to make a presentation about a actor I instantly choose Mary Martin as I was eger to talk about her and the movie and because I knew a lot about her from the top of my head and had a good cool video if a interview. I got a A and was happy. For a few weeks I’ve been wanting to rewatch this movie for about the dozenth time. And finally able to. So did you guess my age ? I’m…….. 19 as of rn but almost 20 so I’m on the younger side of the generation but even to this movie changed my life. And I don’t care how old when I have kids or if they want to or not I’m gonna to show them this movie at least once and actually not show them the Disney one because this one is so much better.
Rip Mary Martin I hope you’re looking down happy with how the movie ended up you did an amazing job. And in my heart and a lot of other people you will always be the one and only true Peter Pan !!😁😁😁
OMG, the memories flood back and then I remember all the song lyrics! Hard to believe it's 60 yrs old, because it seems like yesterday... still magical. And I still believe in fairies!

Love Captain Hook.
I watched this over and over when we were kids, my grandma bought us the VHS and we’d watch this together all the grandkids on Saturday’s….
50 years ago I played Captain Hook and Father Darling in a Spartanburg SC children’s theater production of this marvelous musical.
I had this on vhs and watched it over and over as a child. I was born in 1986 but this really touched me, even though it was 26 years older. I always thought ( at the time) that Prince William & Harry were really John & Michael. Lol 😍
So nostalgic. We had the VHS growing up. I love this version.
I first watched this in the first or 2nd grade. The last few years of my parents being married. Used to watch with my late grandma all the time. Thank you for the memories
I’m now 30 years old, and I remember this version
Man, when I was a little 8 year old punk in the 80’s, I was in love with the blonde Indian. Probably my first crush. This brings me way back.
Yeah tiger lilly was a babe.
I watched this all the time when I was a child. I even watched it in my mid twenties and still enjoyed it but something about being almost 40 I cried and cried at so many points. The opening credits, Peter singing about Neverland before they leave, Peter's lullaby, and when the children start to sing Tender Shepard when they return, and finally when Peter tells Wendy she is too old to go with him. The whole story of Peter Pan has taken on a new meaning as I get older. Such stellar performances from the cast. This and Hook will always be my favorite Peter Pan performances.
It certainly has more emotion than the Disney version. One hopes that kids of this generation watch this version and can see the wonderful quality. Yes, some of it is dated with racial stereotypes such as the "indians", but it is in the style of children having fun. Cyril Richard was wonderful as the sneering Hook. He also played a similar comic role at the Met Opera in La Pericole, and his wonderful diction and comedy came over the radio broadcast very well.
@@clementj1 I agree with what you said, and goodness thank you for this upload Cyril is amazing! I was very scared of him as a child but his scenes and songs may be some of my favorites now and he embodies this character so well.
Oh how I miss doing live Theater. I used to watch this as a boy and loved it, I was always a huge Capt Hook fan especially his costumes lol. As an adult watching the actors and hearing them use of their voices and their projection is marvelous not to mention how they use their bodies with big bold movements to tell the story.
❤ this, I’m 71 and grew up on it!
"You mustn't touch me! No one must ever touch me!"
Lol
I think I saw it before 1960. I was probably 4 years old 1954....my sister and I bought the album and played it to death...I can sing the lyrics by heart....I knew then I wanted to be Peter

I always loved the maid’s ballet number. ❤
So did I!
As did I!!! She was marvelous as Liza!!
I watched this in 1960 when I was 9 years old.
I am 28 and grew up watching this.
I love the memories this brings up. Watching it 30 years later made me a kid all over again. I always had a huge crush on Tiger Lily. Watching it years later, I notice little things. like how bad the younger lost boys are at their choreography. But I also notice the absolute love in Mary Martin's eyes when she performs with these children. I'd bet she was the best cast mom ever. Her performance is flawless. i've seen this with Sandy Duncan and Kathy Rigby and while they each brought something wonderful to the performance, no one can match the joy that Mary brought
The mistakes in choreography show that it was filmed almost live and can add to the charm.
1990s kid had this on vhs was one of my favorite plays ever! Rip Mary Martin, movie legend thank you for this treasure
This brings back many childhood memories, back when the world still made sense and tomorrow was full of promise. Thank you for making this available for everyone. 🖖🏼

The Peter Pan I grew up on before the 2003 Peter Pan lol watched this tape over and over. My sister and I would do the puppet show in the middle of the night all the time 😂
My mimi, grandma, had this recorded on VHS and I have so many memories of this film and it's so weird how I pictured this film in my head compared to watching it as an adult. I remember that each commercial break, because it was recorded from television, had a soup commercial and I've been trying to find the soup commercial for years. I just remember that they keep trying to share the soup or take soup from one person's bowl and put it in the other or something like that and I've been unable to find the commercial ever since.
This is my childhood in a nutshell. Grew up watching this and have not seen it in ages. Like being reunited with a long-lost friend.
I had this on VHS. This was before DVDs were ever made. Looking at this always brings back memories.

I saw this version of Peter Pan when I was a child, like around 8, 9, or 10 & I loved it. Such great songs & music & all the actors just great. It's been yrs since I've seen this, I'm 65 yrs old now & watching it on CZcams brought back a flood of memories. The best version of Peter Pan I've seen in my yrs. There are those among us who can still remember our adventures in Neverland, and many of us desperately wish we still remembered how to fly.
Omg I love what u said! It’s beautiful and bittersweet. ❤🥰 thank u
The happy childhood memories of seeing this Peter Pan with Mary Martin every year made it even more wonderful.

I have been looking for this all over the internet for YEARS (its never popped up on youtube before only clips for some reason). My Mimi passed when I was 5 and this is one of 2 memories I have left of her. I'm legit gonna cry from happiness when I get home and watch this.

I'll never forget when I was a child. Grandma asked what movie we wanted her to buy for us for Christmas. We requested Peter Pan, because Disney's Peter Pan was one of my favorite movies.
I couldn't believe WE were actually going OWN Peter Pan! I couldn't wait. Then she gave us this version of Peter Pan...
My first major disappointment in life 😂
(I hope we were at least courteous and thanked her politely. I honestly can't remember.)
Are u joking? This is the absolute best! You are the only comment I’ve came across saying they were disappointed. Goodness I hate to hear that.
It’s been decades since I’ve seen this and makes me remember being little again for a minute
I watched this televised play every year on television when it was first shown in 1962 until they stopped showing it. I was so happy when I found it here. Thank you very much for sharing it. I love Peter Pan. It keeps me young at heart. I am 70, and I will never grow old.
How Wonderful it is to see Mary Martin as Peter Pan. I actually saw this broadcast and each year, looked forward to seeing it again. On one of the last times that NBC broadcast it @ 1973, it had a "curtain call" with Ms Martin coming forward in costume to thank the home audience for watching and always believe in the magic. It is now long gone BUT can be seen in the 1956 version in b/w, a kinescope that survived. But, I am happy to see it again...Thank you for posting and bringing out the child in all of us when we watch this classic again.
thanks for sharing this O so wonderful memory from yesteryear!
I used to fantasize having a tiny tv I could hide under the covers so I could watch Peter Pan whenever I pleased. Finally at age 67 my dream came true!
As magical as ever. How I wished as child I could go to Never-Never Land.
YES
I am 41 years old and I remember watching this with my Dad when I was a kid
I had the VHS too. What a wonderfully old memory!
I watched this video at my grandparents house as a child. I’m 30 now. Brings back such great memories
This was originally telecast on NBC in 1955 and 1956., in black & white, of course. I saw the 1956 telecast when I was 6 years old. Couldn't wrap my head around a woman playing a boy...🤔
Loved Cyril Ritchard in dual roles !
This is a remarkably good videotape of the original 1954 Broadway production and cast. Moved to a TV studio, naturally.
Errata: This IS the 1960 production, videotaped in color at NBC's Brooklyn studio, with some cast changes: the children of the original 1954-56 presentations outgrew their roles.
The original NBC telecasts were filmed live and in color also, and broadcast in color on a limited basis . Very few households had color TV's then. We saw all 3 versions in black and white. Didn't get a color TV 'til 1966, when the 3 networks commenced full-time color broadcasting
This restoration came from the laserdisc of the studio videotape from 1960, not from a consumer videotape. The laserdisc already had some restoration, and this copy has corrected defects where sets of interlaced lines were displaced in individual frames. Broadcasts from the studio restoration all had the displaced lines. Laserdiscs have full studio resolution, but with some additional video noise which is not very noticable except in a few scenes. The noise was also reduced in this restoration.
First aired on NBC Thursday 12/8/60 and then rerun on Saturday 2/21/63, Friday 1/21/66, Friday 3/2/73, and Friday 3/24/89. The 1989 rerun aired before Easter was coincidentally sponsored by Peter Pan Peanut Butter. Thanks to a 1989 rerun, Disney re-released their version of Peter Pan on 7/14/89.
I was 11 when it aired in '89.
I still have the VHS 😂 Ahhh, the memories!
Thank you so much for posting this. My brother and I owned this on vhs when we were kids and I still have it. Bless
