I remember reading a article and I forget when but I think it was guitar magazine, someone asked Eddie VanHalen who he thought was was the best guitar player and his response was ROY CLARK, I remember it because it absolutely floored me that a rocker would say that.

Honky tonks was a Big part of my Life. I was a kid growing up in a musicians Family, back in the late 60-70s an most of the 80"s. I was living in Hotels an Motels all over Canada. An I know many would say its not a good life for a kid, but I loved it. It is true I didn't get much schooling and don't remember the names of kids i ran into along the way. But truly I would not have changed anything as a kid on the road, waking up in truck stops and road side stops along the highways.( I can almost smell them B.L.T's at the road side dinners, you know the ones that come in that waxy paper bag) lol. I started playing Guitar at the age of 8, and Im sure my Dad got sick of hearing me play the (G) run. But one thing for sure, I never got sick of all the times I heard that Country Music coming up from the vents in the Hotel rooms. an all the Girls that I danced with at the Country dances. also have to tell you about all the musicians I got to meet and even play music with (The Rhythm Pals) an even got to play with one of the steel player's that played for Ray Price. I meet people like Larry Mercey of The Mercey Brothers, and so many more great Musician's. Playing and singing was the greatest times of my Life as a Kid in a Musician's Family, and will be for the rest of my Life. For you who Love County Music, Take a look at my you-tube channel. Love ya all, and God Bless.

I know Roy Clark has passed on, but when he mentioned Schroeder Hall which is a few miles outside of Victoria Texas, he brought me back to my youth. I grew up dancing at all the great dancehalls around South Texas, Schroeder was one of my favorites. It was a very sad day this past year when the lady who owns Schroeder Hall announced that she was going to retire and close it down to weekly dances and shows. About 8 months before Charley Pride passed away, I took my wife to Schroeder to see him. The hall was packed to the rafters with fans wanting to see one of the greats! It’s sad to see just about every dancehall around has closed their doors because they don’t have the country artists coming to promote their music and newest releases like they used to when radio stations were spinning their music and the artists were going out to honor their contracts.

Just a little bit south of you here in Corpus Christi and I agree there are no dance halls left anymore. The few we had left around here closed up. To quote Dillon. "Times they are a changing"

Listening to this song takes me back to Hank Williams, of course. My daddy used to rent a room at Hank’s mother’s Boarding House in Alabama and he became pretty good pals with Hank. As a
matter of fact, daddy said that he and Hank would sit outside and play music together. Needless to say, I grew up with Hank. 😂

I didn’t remember that Eddie Raven played with the band Boogie Kings. I grew up around Eunice, La. and danced many a night to the great music of the Boogie Kings. I loved it when at times the band would come off the stage and make a circle around some of the good dancers! Anyone one out there remember those days?

Adults could bring teenage children into some Honky Tonks back in the 50s and 60s. The older women in their 30s and 40s would grab me and taught me how to dance country. I'm in my 70s and still love older women and can't stop moving my feet to old country.

I recently ran across a photo of him and me that someone had taken of us together at the club in the summer of 1976. And he’s been down to where I live now in Rockport Texas to play at Oysterfest.

I’ve grown up since a teen in Avondale Estates where Bill is from, and my dad is the associate Pastor of his old Baptist church in Avondale. One of the guys who played baseball with Bill at high school (and eventually took his place on the team when bill graduated) still goes to church there. He and his wife are the sweetest and say they’ve occasionally heard from him. I’ve never heard a single bad thing about Bill around town at all. ❤

The one piece of music missing from all these episodes about Honky Tonk's is the greatest instrumental ever recorded ....namely "Honky Tonk" by Bill Doggett. Maybe because it's an R&B classic but it still has a place in Honky Tonk linguistic lexicon history. BTW...where the heck did the word Honky Tonk come from? Weirdest word I ever heard.
