Just a remark on #6: isn't nuclear still the safest power source in terms of power produced?
Yes it is (I'm a nuclear engineer) Nuclear plants are extremely safe and have safety upon safety measures nowadays
Plus nuclear power plants have higher sustainability than any other power producing we currently have.
There are tons of plants in the world that operate just fine with no issues. Including US Navy carriers and Submarines.
I would think hydro electric would be safer
@@markwalsh262 except when the dam breaks.
Yes. The real issue is mining uranium, because if it's done irresponsibly it can cause a lot of long term issues, and storage of nuclear waste because people are like 'not in my backyard.'
@@markwalsh262 building dams kinda screws up rover ecosystems. I would think solar would be better, except mining the components.
Can you do a video on the top ten producing nuclear power plants in the world? That might be a pretty cool one!! Thank you for the great videos! I recommend you channels to so many people!!
Trust me, it would be a pretty dull list. Japan, Korea, and France would probably take all the top spots. China may now have one on the list?
Try Canada for number one
@@kseltl Tokyo Electric has the largest just under 8000 MW. It was a fear during the Fukushima disaster. Canada may be on the list, but not at the top.
@@eggsngritstn unless they have restarted there 8000mw reactor in Japan which was shut down after Fukushima Bruce is number 2 behind South Korea. Bruce is huge has 8 units let net forget Canada invented the Candu reactor

It's a common misconception that nuclear power isn't safe when it is thousands of times safer than any other form of electricity generation. How many millions of people do you think have died to coal mining?
Ugh. Yes. Loving shaggy beard Simon. So majestic.
The Yukka tunnels were built over a fault line. That’s why it was abandoned.
Yo Simon ...years ....and I appreciate your time and patience 🙌🏿🆙️🆙️
Another channel?! Okay, that's it. I've decided that there must be more than one Simon. Maybe there is a multiverse after all.
How does this man keep making more channels. Simon really is taking over youtube.
Funny, given the state of our planet currently, the govt expects humans to still be here in 10k years.
We appreciate you Simon!
In to the shadows is much older than Warographics 😅
Seriously though, both excellent channels.
Yeah, I am honestly surprised that he isn't plugging Warographics
Haha sweet found another of his channels!! Thanks guys!! Got at least 12 of his now haha
@@RHCole these videos are made like a month in advance.
Also…what happened to the graphic? The frame was there but…nothing else.
@@ChineseKiwi His ad reads aren't, tho. It's why he hardly ever wears the same clothes in them.
To be fair, the reason the Turkey Point reactors were given that extension is because we're building a massive green energy complex in Yeehaw Junction (yes, that's a real place) called the Okeechobee Clean Energy Center. It will use a combination of nuclear, natural gas, and solar to produce energy for most of, if not all of the Central Florida area. Once the OCEC is fully operational the Turkey Point reactors will be powered down and deactivated.
The Okeechobee will be built in Yeehaw Junction 😂🤣☠️ I don't think I speak Florida.
Yeehaw junction has really suffered in the past few years. I remember going there as a kid and they had a great little stopping place. Last time I was there the sign was in shambles, half the gas stations were closed, and the one that was opened looked like a meth front.
A part of my inner child died that day.
@@takeohtyme the Interstate System did that to a lot of places.
"yeehaw junction" I love Florida sometimes
@@partlycloudy7707 I grew up in an old moonshiner's hamlet called Scrambletown, in the middle of the Ocala National Forest. My favorite fishing and swimming spot was a set of bluffs called Butterbutt Landing. Oh, and my in-laws live in a town called Taintsville. We definitely have some, shall we say interesting, place names here.
The thing about WIPP warning humans (or other future sentients) away? Never underestimate sentient stupidity, or telling a being "Can't Touch That." Look how well saying there's a curse associated with opening Egyptian tombs. Although if instead of 'cursed' someone had put "Toxic Fungi Inside. Do Not Inhale. Wear A Mask." in multiple languages, someone would have still cracked open one particular tomb; Tutankhamun's Tomb.
The constant and repeated testing of nuclear weapons is another example of how stupidity can go. How many explosions need to take place for people to understand how dangerous this stuff is?!?! And they already no the byproduct is useless, indisposable, and dangerous but the idiots keep blowing stuff up!!! Stop it already!
Mr. Yuk stickers do not effectively keep children away from potential poisons and may even attract children. It goes all the way down to the children!
"Sorry for the mess. Mind your step."
Another great video! 👍
I live in Tacoma, WA and have worked near Hanford. It's a sketchy place... Always leaking
"Nuclear power produces nuclear waste." Only true of fission reactors.
Rest In Peace to those that passed away.
For the algorithm!
I'm a bit disappointed that INL didn't make the list. It's pretty interesting, and you've done videos on it before.
I must subscribe to Into The Shadows...Must...Love... Simon.
My grandfather works for W.I.P.P. He operates mechanical arms behind 6 inches of glass putting barrels into what they call pods. Extremely cool and dangerous.
Nuclear Power Plants are actually extremely safe and more sustainable than anything else we currently use
Yes! Currently has the smallest deaths-to-power generated ratio! I am fascinated by nuclear energy and study it as a hobby. Not smart enough to go to school for it, but I love reading about it.
I lived near the wipp site for about 7 years and used to ride my 4wheeler about 20 miles away. Great sand dunes out there. I had no idea that’s what it was used for
Ride your "4 wheeler"... So your car then?
@@elsden722 no. A four wheeler is an ATV.

Simon could you do a video on the Savannah River Site?
11:14
Sounds like the beginning of a horror movie.
Fascinating! I also watch Plainly Difficult and so I know of many of the nuclear failure stories including the one in Brazil.
Plainly difficult is one of the best channels on CZcams
@@christycullen2355 I agree. His research and base knowledge along with a bit of dark humor communicate quite effectively.
I cycled passed Sellafield once
Bikes still don't need lights at night there, or so I hear.
Into the Shadows isn't new anymore, Warographics is new now! Simon has so many channels, with so many cool writers, editors and topics, it's awesome
Your beard is looking fantastic. Good work.
Not using the yucca mountain facility is the most irresponsible thing the United States has ever done
Could you please do an episode on the nuclear waste repository in Onkalo, Finland? It should make an interesting "Megaprojects" episode.
Wonderful.
Maddening!
Rising sea levels will empty the Marshall island's nuclear waste into the sea!? That's surely criminal, right? ;-)
Wait until you hear about how that stuff was produced, and what happened to the people who lived there......
Its base was always below the water table, so, blaming rising seas is a convenient excuse.
It was poorly built and in a hurry.
Started off with misinformation about Chernobyl. When they tried to shut it down (scram) the graphite tips on the boron control rods caused a surge in the chain reaction that increased exponentially until it exploded. There definitely wasn’t a steam explosion or it would have been much worse.
and that surge of power flashed the cooling water to steam. Therefore a steam explosion.
Did everybody forget about Three Mile Island
They are building a molten salt reactor in Wyoming right now
I live in WA and want to visit Handford so bad!
In October I was at the site where Fermi did the nuclear reaction in Chicago
Simon check out Rocky Flats in Colorado.🤯
Lol I live in the tri cites. Also known as the area around Hanford. People in town like to joke that we glow at night. It’s not true though. :) it’s not a nuclear wasteland here though. A semi large bustling city with lots of sagebrush to go around. Love your videos. Keep up the good work
I love the empty frame. No footage yet? Lol
Glad to have found someone else that noticed!
You have to do one about the first nuclear reactor that was built in the University of Chicago, then dismantled and buried nearby. You can visit the site of the burial & there are signs warning not to dig.
Been there too.
I remember the piles of scrap, presumably unused, graphite.
All gone now
I believe a more likely story is that's where the Government/Mob buried secrets too.
There is a small one at Reed College in Portland, Ore.
"The Reed Research Reactor was established in 1968 and is the only reactor operated primarily by undergraduates. At any given time, there are approximately 40 students licensed to operate the Reed reactor. In addition to operating the reactor, many students serve as senior staff and in supervisory positions.
Much of the work performed at the Reed reactor is in collaboration with external research groups. We are certified by the State of Oregon to perform radiation meter calibrations."
I guess the Into the Shadows logo was ... in the shadow?
Yooo!!! I've fished by Turkey Point. There's actually a marina with a great restaurant only a couple miles away, "Black Point". If you're ever in Miami you should stop by, hop a boat, and go see some stupidly big wildlife that thrives in the area around the plant.
I'll disagree with the "more renewable and safer alternatives" line. Nuclear is the best path forward IMO
I found your video scary.
Many years ago I moved from Arizona to Oregon. The Columbia River, at one point considered one of the "hottest" in terms of radiation (if I remember correctly) runs along a good portion of the border between Oregon and Washington. And Hanford is on the river, too, Portland downriver from it. I developed a large goiter within several months of moving to Portland. Women around my age at my workplace a couple years later were part of an "epidemic" of thyroid problems... cancer, hyperthyroid, nodules, et al.
Hanford did a lot of nuclear experiments related to the Manhattan Project, and didn't take into account it's cloudy a lot....a lot....in the Pacific Northwest, so radiation during the tests they figured would go up in the sky and dissipate...didn't. Plus there still wasn't a good way to take care of its nuclear waste. I figure not only the Columbia River but the soil, plants, animals, and water sources were radiated all over the region, especially downriver. It was about two decades later the thyroid problems emerged. I doubt me and my co-workers were the only ones affected by nuclear contamination --- allegedly. And the only type of health problem.
Like they were telling us during the Cold War, in the event of a nuclear event, hide under your bed, crouch, and kiss your ass goodbye.
You mean to tell me some reactors are…
Built different?
Yes. From a practical standpoint the French have the best system with reactors that are mostly standardised.
Yucca mountain was a great idea. Shame politics derailed it
How many channel do you really got Simon?
Lookin' a bit fuzzy there Siyo!
Better manscape that face!
On a more serious note,
those Chernobyl workers were absolute HEROES!, as are/were the Scientists who continue to this day to live onsite, and helped design the "Sarcophagus"(we're on Sarcophagus 2 now, I think?, Just when you thought it was safe to make an "Elephant's foot" the HARD WAY!) on a shoestring budget.
A family friend worked security at Hanford
Oh the subject of the Goiânia accident, I was actually background in a short film based off of it back in 2013.
Blue Aria.
Statistically nuclear is the safest form of energy, period
Energy isn't a period.
So when did solar panels end up melting DNA in Humans?
How about the British nuclear tests in Australia? And the woeful clean up attempt at maralinga.
Just curious, what are the world's LEAST interesting nuclear sites? Not joking, I think that would be an interesting challenge and and interesting video.
Can you do a Top Ten Fact Boy channels?
It was done on Dataplanet 10 months ago.
You tell Florida that their Nuclear plants are unsafe and they're like... Hold my beer.
The dome in marshall is already leaking
No mention of that high school kid who built his own nuclear bomb at home?
Comercial ends at 00:32
Chernobyl is the best place as it spawns emissions on a daily basis, psy storms, bloodsuckers and more. Especially stalkers in fireplaces.
Am I the only one who wants to see a TopTenz unless machines in use
There's nothing wrong with nuclear energy, it's far more efficient than solar/hydro and way less affected by changes in weather.
I do not agree. It can kill many people if something goes wrong. Plus the waste….it’s dangerous even if it’s hid somewhere. Bad for the environment!
Well, other than tsunamis.
There is plenty wrong with nuclear energy.
Putting Goiânia incident on the thumbnail was such a PT-BR click bait... And it worked here I am: look, it's Brazil! I know this incident!
"showing signs of a cute radiation poisoning" oh well that doesn't sound too bad!
*acute.
The cooling ponds used at Turkey Point are so hot from Global Warming, they frequently have to shut down reactors because the water is too hot to effectively cool facility.
There are times when blaming global warming is jumping the shark.
Into the Shadows? How about, Into the Armchair? You've got to be working 20 hours a day, Whistler.
Chernobyl will be the most fascinating to me.
I'm disappointed no one in these comments dropped a "40,000 people used to live here".
Its a wonder someone didn't get the brilliant idea of sending the nuclear waste to the Moon (sarcasm).
No mention of SRS on SC and GA border? Think u missed that one. Lol
Informative and sad.
How much money would it take to have Simon shave off his beard and make it into a wig, then wear it in a video?
I think this is the most Western American your beard has ever looked and I live in Montana
Simon forgot Nuketown

"More renewable and safer sources" lol get out of here with that.
Prip-yaat. Prip. Yaat. Not pripyt.
Extending the use of old reactors isn't a smart move, even the Hartlepool nuclear power station is overstretched running with a cracked boiler at a lower capacity, if that goes pop, it'll cause £23 worth of damage to the area... :P
Yes, Hanford is a terrifying nuclear waste land just north of the Tri-Cities (Pasco-Richland-Kenniwick) in Washington state. Now people, stop moving here and driving up housing prices!
Used to work at Hanford. Lived in the Tri-Cities since 1990. This video is over blown hype. Focuses on sensationalism for clicks. Sad to see. "Fact" Boi Simon's writers have done much better in the past.
You are incorrect about the marshall islands, the dome covers the top soil from the marshall islands. After the nuclear testing there they began to clean it up, removing 4-10 inchest of topsoil from the marshall islands, that is also what is under the dome. After the cleanup the marshall islands have a small increase in background radiation.
What is under the dome is not at all heavily radioactive, its minorly radioactive, the concrete dome is there so that it doesnt disperse its not needed for shielding from the radiation or anything like that. Its there so that it doesnt disperse over the islands again. It release less radiation than chernobyl or fukushima did.
Nuclear is the most efficient and safest for of energy. Nice try hippie
I was thinking same thing.
We should be around 80% nuclear.
"Safest" ...yeah, gonna need the numbers on the dead from solar panel uaage...
@@paull2166 France is 70% nuclear and has been for quite some time.
@@PhilJonesIII You're absolutely right. The US was headed in that direction until the late 80s.
