    Starsky, this is absolutely incredible! Thanks!!
    This covers just about everything that the 3rd Wave is currently capable of. I am so glad that you stretched it out to its limit! The 3rd Wave is at its heart a wavetable synthesizer with PPG and modern modes, but it does so much more, (sampling, analog, FM, sequencing, MPC etc), and sounds great doing it. Plus... 24 voices and 4 parts always available.

    I had such a crazy journey with mine: totally unimpressed at first, just based on the very PPG-sounding presets which did nothing for me. I actually boxed it up to return it. But having spent the money, I wanted to give it a fair shake so I gave it a weekend - and I’m SO glad I did. It's an absolute monster synth, and might be the desert island synth of the decade. It's absolutely gorgeous in every possible way!

    Excellent review! This is my favorite synth. I sold my desktop to get the keyboard version, but then accidentally-on-purpose bought a Super Gemini. :D (actually because I heard there may be a PolyAT update of some kind coming in the future for the 3rd Wave keys.) I figured I'd get the Gemini now, and then grab the PolyAT version of the 3rd Wave when that materializes. (and if for some reason it doesn't, I'll re-buy the desktop 3rd Wave and control it from the Gemini) I've only been without the 3rd Wave for about a month now, but already miss it. :D Having some withdrawl symptoms I think.

    @AudioLomtik Před 15 dny

    @StarskyCarr Thanks so much for this indepth video of one of my favorite bits of gear. One that, thanks to the Groove team seems to just keep getting better and better! The Juno 60 comparison was great because this synth is a great modern replacement for the analog synths that Roland refuses to make. But it also highlights what think is one area for potential improvement --- if you listen to the "meatiness" of the bass on the Juno for plucked synth bass sounds, it has some "oomph" that the 3rd Wave lacks ever so slightly, whereas in the mids and highs the 3rd Wave either equals or surpasses the Juno. I can't be sure, but it may be something in the envelope type that makes the difference, maybe new firmware options could be introduced to give it that "oomph" of punchy analog bass? As much as I love my 3rd Wave, I would love it even more if this happened.

    Thanks so much for doing this review, I stayed till the end! I have the Prophet 12 and this seems like it addresses all the issues I had with that synth. It seemed like Dave Smith never wanted to do revisions and each synth was like a work of art to him. That's maybe why he never wanted to redo the Prophet 5 and was against that for a long time. Apple has the opposite approach where the tweak the same product the iphone 15 different times over and over again. On the Phophet 12, I didn't like the filters, the OSC's were stiff and there wasn't any bottom end on the synth, the effects were bland, the ARP was wonky and would jump around in time, you couldn't do real wavetables or import waves. But the interface and modulation was perfect, it seems like the 3rd wave copied it's user interface and modulation. Sequential really should have made this the Prophet 12 rev2. It has double the poly, double the parts, great effects, deep bass is there, the waves now are very close to analog with vintage mode. It can even sound close to the Juno or Prophet 6 which is really impressive! Just have a 24 voice 4 part Prophet 6 would be impressive enough with all the modulation possibilities for sound design. Plus all the wavetables, VS synth, amazing filters, song mode, sampling, MPE... It seems like it has everything and I can sell the Prophet 12 and get this one. This video really sold me on it!

    @jamespingel8730 Před 16 dny

    Great video. I just got a module a few weeks ago and have been having great fun exploring. So far, my biggest pain point by far is the envelopes. Most of my other synths express their envelopes in terms of time, rather than an abstract value from 1-127. Maybe I'll get used to it - though I had a Prophet Rev2 for 3 years and this bothered me the entire time I had that synth too.
    It just bothers me because I'll be making a sound and working on something like a decay envelope and it's not long enough at 65, not long enough at 66, so I jump up into the 80s and it's way too long. But I don't really know *how* long any of these numbers are in relation to each other. So I have to back it down to 65 and then it feels like I find out the number I wanted was either 66 or 79 every time. If I knew I was around 300ms for the decay and that's a bit too short I can go to 350ms, but I just have failed to figure out what 65 means in relation to 70 or 80 with no units to connect it to. That goes doubly for the wave envelopes.
    EDIT: I still like it overall, just being able to see the envelopes expressed in terms of time constants would be a huge workflow improvement for me.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  Před 16 dny +1

      That's not something I've ever considered tbh. I can't think of a hardware synth that gives me a time value. I find that I get used to the knob positions for different types of tones. For me, seconds wouldn't be that much use without knowing the beats per second, and even then I would teak the tone to fit the other elements of the track. Like you, however, I do find a new synth takes a while to get used to.

    • @brianellis5164
      @brianellis5164 Před 15 dny

      What synth has time values? You can tell the difference between 250 and 275 milliseconds by ear? How is that humanly possible? Just twist the knob till you find what you like, that's how every other synth is.

    • @touchthatdial
      @touchthatdial Před 14 dny

      @@StarskyCarr Hydrasynth does this. You can set each stage of each of the envelopes synced to master clock (i.e. 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64) so each envelope effectively functions like a synced one-shot LFO (and envelopes can loop too, so they can act like custom LFO shapes in that sense).
