- EXPLAINING DISNEY #11
To celebrate the 87th Birthday it Walt Disney’s Goofy (AKA Dippy Dawg, The Goof, George Geef), I take a look at his evolution, right from his first Mickey Mouse short appearance in 1932, his Mickey Donald and Goofy trio-shorts of the 1940s, his ‘everyman’ phase in the 1950s, his turn on cult classic series Goof Troop and its spin-off movies A Goofy Movie and An Extremely Goofy movie, right through to his modern day CG look.
I take a look at how he evolved alongside Disney’s other popular characters, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, as a follow-up to my previous videos “Evolution of MICKEY MOUSE Over 90 Years (1928-2018) Explained” and “Evolution of DONALD DUCK Over 85 Years (1934-2019) Explained”.

Please stop asking why I did not include Kingdom Hearts in the video. This video is not about every single thing the character has been in or every single piece of clothing he has every worn. It is about his design and character evolution in animation and not video games.
Just as I don't mention every single short the character has appeared in, I don't mention every single show or movie or game. We would be here for hours.
Regardless, the Kingdom Hearts design just takes the Clubhouse design and puts new clothes on him. It's irrelevant to the overall evolution of the character and to the video.
My first thought when i saw this video (before i clicked on it) was "Lets see how he fits Kingdom Hearts into this". And you did not. Also, with this attitude of a comment you have written, you have earned a dislike from me. You want to act through in your video but get butthurt when people ask about Kingdom Hearts.
I'm going to have to agree with billy fraiser. Though his design didn't change that much, it's still worth mentioning, considering the game series has become a HUGE phenomenon.
kingdom heart GOOFY 15:38
Where’s kingdom hearts
I agree with you, but I wouldn't say that they take his Clubhouse design 'cause KH 1 is from 2002 and Clubhouse from 2006.
I think Goofy is the single best character that Disney has ever produced. Dedicated father, doesn't have a single malicious bone in his body, generally upbeat and good-natured, and when he happens upon someone who's in a bind, major or minor, his first instinct is usually to try to help.
I have a special place for him in my heart. He has a good spirit.
My thoughts exactly. Gotta love him
Thats why he's my favorite
Me too..thanks to his famous Goofy Holler and my favorite catchphrase "Gwarsh"..He as well as Mickey, Donald, Pluto, Chip and Dale were among the cartoon characters deserve a very big special place into my heart as of this day..I love them very deeply
Dude I……I SO AGREE Goofy is super funny, but I think during the era when he was taller and ganglier Goofy was at his best
The 1950s "refined" goofy makes me physically uncomfortable
😂😂 so weird, right??
It's my favorite version tbh
I actually really like a lot of those shorts, but the design looks so strange after growing up with 90's Goofy. Plus, y'know - he doesn't have any ears HOW DOES HE HEAR THINGS
His wife was human and his child clearly an hybrid
same
if they ever do a modern Goof Troop reboot they should just make it so Dippy Dog is Goofy's dad
and canonically establish that george geef and goofy are one and the same with geef being goofy in his younger days
@@mariagarcia1063 I wouldn't like the Geef inclusion. Most of the time hes just too... different. I'd rather him be one of the millions of Goofinites that run around the How-to videos.
I wouldn't mind seeing that. Then the little kid could have been Goofy but as a child. Dippy Dog being his father would really neat to see that. Love the Idea.
The exact same thought hit my mind while watching this video and I came to the comment to write about it but I guess you beat me to it.
That is actually ingenious!
"Boy, did you see that? Nobody takes a wallop like Goofy. What timing! What finesse! What a GENIUS!"
Yet he briefly dies in kingdom hearts 2 from a rock...
@@mushroomhead3619 Killer Croc: "Was it a big rock?"
I loved how Roger Rabbit looked up to Goofy"s physical comedy!
Goofy, a true master of his craft.
My favorite era of Goofy is weirdly that strange era in the 50s where Goofy was the everyman, struggled with road rage, and had a smoking addiction. I almost cracked up the first time I saw that short hearing Goofy say "weed" in a cartoon.
And his wife cheating on him with the milkman.
Nah, the How-Tos were far better.
Jacob Martin my Fovorite Goofy Kingdom hearts version.
That's mine too. A real product of it's time, I'd have loved to have seen more, but they could never recapture that nowadays. But it was nice to see some cartoons from the 40s and 50s aimed at adults and satirizing adult life in that era.
@@LegendStormcrow the fuck do you mean "nah"? You're seriously telling this guy "No, that era isnt your favorite. This one is."?
I always thought the "George Geef" era of shorts were simply about a generic member of his race rather than Goofy himself, despite said shorts being under the Goofy name. Which would explain how some appearances lacked certain iconic features like his buck teeth and lack of ears.
Disney’s official explanation is that Goofy is simply “playing a character” in those shorts.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder so.. in the disney canon, are they all just actors or some shit?
@@TheRach995 Yes and no I guess... Have you seen House of Mouse?
@@TheRach995 Theres a short where donald is trying to get famous peoples autographs (shirley temple, marylin monroe, etc) and when he finally sneaks on to a studio, all the famous people come flocking to him for an autograph. So like some of the time the characters are depicted as famous people too. It's a little inconsistent.
And it's obviously not Goofy because sometimes George Geef has no ears and doesn't wear gloves.
Goofy Movie- One of the most underrated Disney films of all time.
I think he's the most underrated out of the "Mickey and Friends" franchise, I could find hardly any Goofy merchandise when I went to Disneyland but loads for the others.
Mason P it isn’t underrated it was shown every year in school bro everyone has seen it. everyone thinks it’s underrated since it was straight to DVD
Hi dad soup! 😢
I consider it an honorary member of the Disney Renaissance!
Meh I agree but I disagree
Gonna be honest I just clicked to hear someone talk about that 50's design with no ears since it kinda weirds me out. Don't disappoint me.
Also gonna be a typical 90's baby and say Goofy Movie/Goof Troop Goofy is my favorite version.
I absolutely was baffled beyond belief as a child when I saw Goof Troop and Goofy's eyes were small along with having a pink skin foreheard, while the Goofy I was familiar with had large eyes with no forehead, only black skin.
I could not fathom why they did this, and was obsessed with it.
They also were inconsistent with the body skin colors. Both Goofy and Pete were shown to have both pink bodies and black bodies.
It's crazy how far the animation developed in only a decade from the 30's to 40's.
Goes to show just how aggressive Walt was when it came to the advancement of animation techniques in the period. We can put it down to the invention of three incredible major advancements -- 3-Strip Technicolor, the Multiplane camera and new ink & paint techniques and effects practices developed by the artists
That era in time was one of intense technological and artistic advancement. You can see the same leaps in the film industry too. Because that was the era where styles and techniques that we consider standard practice today were literally invented. It's easy to forget that someone had to invent concepts as basic as squash & stretch.
I have...such a soft spot for Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas...
1 of the few Christmas movies I make an effort to watch every year
*sees 1950s Goofy*
"Put that thing back where it came from or so help me!"
Artist05 ) "She's out of our lives!"
That's a reference 😂😂😂
AHHHHHHH ITS THE NIGHTMARES THEIR COMING AHHHHH
As weird as his earless design is in the George Geef shorts, they're also some of his funniest.
The idea of a world populated by Goofys acting like regular people is just inherently funny.
I don't like it :(
Goofy from Goof Troop is my favorite iteration of the character though I love them all. You know the scene in Who Framed Roger Rabbit when he's in the theater watching Goofy with a look of hero worship on his face? That's me watching ANYthing Goofy-related. I'm a bit of a klutz and always goofing up which is why I identify with him so much. Goofy from Goof Troop is an awesome, caring dad, too which is why I honestly envy Max a little. I wish Goofy was my dad. Btw-this was awesome. Thank you so much. I love this character a lot.
Thank *You*!
I can relate to Goofy a bit myself. I'm a klutz. I also love his desire to help his friends, even though he's a bit... goofy, in the thinking department. He's a great father on Goof Troop! I think Peg should have married Goofy! He's a lot nicer than Pete!
@@vincentfranklin17 Pete definitely has his issues but then Peg's not perfect either. They're both selfish and self-centered in their own way. In a way it's why they're perfect for each other. They each can't stand and use each other to the same degree. Goofy would end up disappointing Peg because despite his affable nature Goofy's got a reserve of confidence within himself that Pete doesn't have. When it comes down to it Goofy would stand up for himself while Pete ends up letting Peg run roughshod over him.
At least that's based on the shows logic. They used a lot of sexist stereotypes when they developed Peg. The movies weren't too different. I love the series as a whole but it definitely could have used a lot better character design when it came to the women in the series.
My favorite Goofy appearances are by far in his "how to" series. My Dad and I would watch them together whenever we just wanted to hang out when I was a kid. It was one of the few things we shared in common.
Goofy is my second favorite Disney character. I love his How-To cartoons! They're hysterical!
Lifespan of a dog: 10-13 Years

@@optombomber2980 It’s a joke
Goof Defys Death
He’s a cow
Goofy’s buck teeth being close together makes me so uncomfortable omg😂
goofy is my favorite from the main disney trio
9:37 I love that Goofy holler. I need to use that as my alarm, lol.
Goofy as always been my favourite out of the trio. I loved him and I’d say the how to goofy shorts were the best. I laughed at how to swim and how to ski. Especially the magical hat episode I forgot it’s name.
Am I the only one here who thinks Goofy In Kingdom Hearts is the best one? His appearance is quite well designed and he seems ready to smash face with his shield with Sora and Donald.
He's litterally the smartest character in the series.
Douglas Howe KH came out like 5 years before clubhouse tho
As much as I like Goofy's KH design, Kingdom Hearts Goofy is far from the the best incarnation of the character. Since the Kingdom Hearts series is more serious and mature like a Final Fantasy game, Goofy doesn't really have that Disney slapstick nature to him like he does in the "How To" shorts and most of his other appearances...
The George Geef era is my fav. Used to watch it all the time when I was younger. It also brings a kind of nostalgia despite not growing up in the time period. My old man goes on about his younger years to the point where HIS nostalgia is either heretical or I just picked up on it
The issues I have with the current Paul Rudish Goofy design is the emphasis on him being too gross and too unrefined. He has lots of little hairs sticking out, a long bulbous chin, and even has torn up shoes. I guess they wanted to emphasize the “hick” side of him, but in these newer shorts, it comes off as offputting and not the Goofy everyone knew him as.
He did age a lot.
Well they are supposed to match his original design back in the day. I wouldn't really call him "gross", but I get what you're coming from. I think he's just the same character just in his classic design and I think that's what the designers was going for. I hope they continue to use that design in future shorts ONLY though. 🙏
I agree. I am not a fan of this design. (Especially that one where he's a reanimated corpse with bones sticking out, etc.)
This is supposed to be like his “dippy dawg” design.
I do NOT like the design for Goofy in the current shorts. He looks mean. Donald and Mickey look like themselves just fine, but Goofy? Nope. Not my Goofy.
he looks like a homeless man...
@@LalitoTV Just like he was the first times we saw him
@@LalitoTV hes supposed to look like a dopey tattered yokel thats literally who goofy is.
@@dark12794 ehh, I think that the common design before the new shorts is better.
(The one adapted to, and still remaining in Kingdom Hearts)
The modern designs look just plain ugly.
My favorite area is the 90s with Goof-trop and a Goofy movie:)
Mine would be Goof Troop and Kingdom Hearts versions of him
My iconic Goofy will always be from the 1940s "how to" shorts. I believe he's at his funniest in those, played against the strait man narrator or game announcer. "Goofy Double Dribble" is a personal favourite. But in those, Goofy isn't so much a character, as he is a template for ALL the characters. Which may explain his evolution into his role as an every-man, like you explain.
1949s "Goofy Gymnastics" is also pretty good.
I agree with you, these how to shorts were so good and funny, I also like A Goofy Movie a lot.
Goofy has been my favorite since I can remember. The 'How To" series a blast and G.G. Geef is beyond brilliant. One of my favorites is Goofy and his mechanized band. When I saw that as a kid I could not stop laughing (the harmonica cracks me up to this day). Clock Cleaners is absolutely brilliant. Tiger Trouble, A Boy and his Lion and the list goes on. As for Goof Troop I was a fan, but it could not replace the classics. Forever Goofy!
U should do Oswald The Lucky Rabbit
Does he have a history?
@@Nasir3623 Yes, but most of it is outside of Disney.
@@Nasir3623 yes, he was walt disney's first character.. pre-mickey but it was also before Walt started his own company, and he didn't have the rights to that character
he got scrapped in the 30's I think.
@@ryanp4616 it was actually the 20s, although oswald did continue after that under different ownership. Walt Disney never owned the character, despite creating him. He didn't realize that initially. He was infuriated when Universal told him that based on what he signed, he didn't own his own character. It wasn't until the 2000's when the Disney company finally acquired the rights to the character. It's really a shame Walt never lived to see the day......
okay, I'm really happy that when you said he had an orange hat and I thought "I could have sworn it was green" I wasn't just making that up from nowhere!
Haha, yeah, kind of strange that the green hat (which he's had for the shortest amount of time in his history) went on to become the most iconic one
Goofy is my favorite main Disney character
Mine is the goofy movie, because his son tries to be normal, but goofy is just goofy.
One of the best father-son movies. With Max fearing that he would grow up to become like Goofy until he realizes that his father is a great person.
I always thought of the “George” episodes of him being more of an actor because he plays mist of the citizens of the town.
Correction: the orange sweater/black vest/blue trousers design (the one most people associate with Goofy) was derived from the comics (where he also had a few re-designs.) He had that colour scheme in the comics way before Goof Troop ever aired.
Goofy was my favorite Disney character as a child. Honestly, I didn’t like how in the newest Mickey Mouse shorts he looks like a dirty hobo. I love the shorts but that design is still weird to me. I don’t want to think of my beloved Goof as a filthy homeless man.
Yeah, the modern Goof looks like he's drunk.
Aww, is it that bad? They was just trying to make him look like his original design back in the day. I like it, he doesn't look like a hobo, it's probably just because he's lost the pants. It was off-putting to me at first, but the design grew on me...
10:40 woah! Didn't see that coming.
I loved "How to Sleep". Whenever I'm tired and can't sleep I think about the part where Goofy falls asleep at work, gets sent home, and then can't sleep once he's in bed.
"Goofy und Max", as it's known in Germany. I loved this show.
I have a feeling its called that because the German government thought "Goof Troop" sounded too reminiscent of the military. Cuz, ya know, that whole super militarized fascist nazi dictatorship thing they're very sensitive about nowadays...lol
You forgot to mention Goofy’s role on 1990’s The Prince and the Pauper. That’s where Goofy’s current voice actor, Bill Farmer, made his debut.
Didn’t forget, just didn’t mention it. The character design is practically the same as the other designs from the era. This video doesn’t aim to discuss every single thing the character has appeared in, just the most important moments in his design evolution.
Actually it was in Who Framed Roger Rabbit in 1987
@@MonkeyButtMovies1 you were close it was 1988
Goof Troop is very dear to my heart in part because I grew up in a single parent household like Max. I don't recall if the show ever dealt with the troubles of growing up with just one parent, but it felt reassuring to see a family like mine on TV.
Goofy in Mickey Mouse Works and House of Mouse are my fave
even though I was born around the Clubhouse era I watched some of the older shorts and movies and fell in love with them
Can you may do a video about Peg Leg Pete, Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle cow, please for their remembrance, I don’t want them to be forgotten.😭
Goof Troop will always be Goof's best look.
87 and killing heartless. What a guy
Amazing that a lot of iconic disney cartoon character returns happened during the christmas carol; one of their best movies to date and the introduction of scrooge himself!
I never knew the movie held so much relevance until now.
I really love the newest design, it’s a little weird and out there but it’s one of my favorites

4:13 Guzzle Goofy
5:14 Sink Goofy (extra song)
7:24 George (his pet)

I like him as the clock cleaner that’s one of my favorite appearances of goofy right behind his A Goofy Movie. He’s my favorite Disney character EVER!!! I love him.
Max from the goof troop was one of my first boy crushes. I feel so old!
All rise for the TRUE hero of Kingdom Hearts.
Goofy was the funny character ever since Goof Troop improved personality; He is the most top character in Disney that I love the most.
This was great! I loved the How-To Goofy shorts. It's fun to see this part of animation history.
My favorite Goofy will always be the one from A Goofy Movie. BTW I adore that movie.
Great film!
Actually, Hal SMith Voiced Goofy in Mickey's Christmas Carol. Bill Farmer didn't take over til the late 80s.
Aert Nlade Have you ever listened to Adventures in Odyssey? Hal Smith used to do the voice for Whit before he died...
@@cailyndempster What does that have to do with my comment?
@@aertnadle2466 Because you seem to know about him?
I think Hal Smith did a goof job as Goofy in Mickey"s Christmas Carol, but Bill Farmer is excellent! His voice is so close to the late Pinto Colvig, it's amazing!
Even though I grew up in the 90's, I had a lot of VHS tapes of older Disney shorts. I actually loved the 1950's "George Geef" Goofy. It was like a more mature version of Goof Troop (mature in the sense that it was about stuff adults deal with, whereas Goof Troop was more about teen scenarios and a father/son relationship).
Just seen a bit of this, hoping you would mention Mickeys Christmas Carol, and you have :)
Definitely one of my favourite Goofy moments. I look forward to watching this the whole way through.
Again, thank you for doing things like this. You are doing a fantastic job :)
I LOVED an extremely goofy movie as a kid, and since goofy has been my favorite of the sensational six, hate this new version he looks creepy af
I’ve always felt any time goofy was shown with small eyes, no ears, differently stylized teeth, or even with anything slightly “off-goofy”, it wasn’t really goofy but some other character of the same species/race. This is supported by the many shorts which depict multiple goofy-like characters simultaneously on screen such as “Californy er Bust” and the various Goofy sports shorts where there are many Goofy-esque athletes in different shapes and sizes. They can’t all be Goofy, can they?
Goof troop goofy is my favorite and I looovvvved that show. Couldn't wait to watch it.
thanks dave, i have forgot how goofy looked and learned something new, youre the best!
Maybe dippy dog could be his grandfather and George geef could be his father making out goody the kid from the George geef cartoons
Nah never mind I’m just being stupid
Well, funnily enough, they did use the original Dippy Dawg design for Goofy’s father in one or two shorts
Wooooow that last Goofy remake is disturbing...
Ikr? I hate it so much 😭
With some of those earless designs, I can understand why the kids in Stand By Me didn't know what kind of animal Goofy was.
George Gief is very unusual and that’s why i love that design.
George’s shorts showed the casual life of people of that time.
I think the Mouseworks stuff is my favorite, though I'm biased since that's what I grew up with
I will say thee How To shorts design is wonderful as well
Inb4 all the “You forgot Mickey and the Roadster Racers / Kingdom Hearts / other film” comments.
Disney characters
Could you please do an Evolution of Daisy Duck?
You have forgotten a whole series in all/most of these videos: House of Mouse.
They should have made George Geef a full different character. At least Dippy Dog and Goofy were a proper evolution. Don't get me wrong, George is a great cartoon character, but he was nothing like main-line Goofy.
My favorite Goofy appearance is the new Disney shorts paring him with Donald and Mickey, then again I love the old one where they were traveling in a camper.
I swear moving day looks like a short that would have been done in the 80s. In my opinion it looks that good
Don't know if it's an unpopular opinion or not, but I actually loved the "How to" shorts as a kid. They were among those that made me laugh the hardest.
Great video man. Very informative. A goofy movie will always be my all time favorite Disney movie.
Thank you!
The how to series. Those were the best!
I'd like to see Horace Horsecollar next, though I'm not sure if he has had much of a theatrical history he always felt like the 4th member of the trio whenever they needed one
Who is Horace hosrecollar

I mean, I watched "a extremely Goofy movie" thousands of times as I had it on VHS and I love it, there's no other appearance I could think of better than that one
Hate the current goofy design. Goof Troop goofy is my favorite.
Philip Kippel They made goofy look gross and unappealing as opposed to his previously lovable design. The style itself would be alright otherwise.
I think the current design is great. It’s actually based on his original Dippy Dawg design.
I actually really like how they use Goofy's original design in the newest series.
The way he walks makes me *VERY* disturbed, and the blank stare adds to the eerieness.

Great job with the video, it shows that Goofy is the most versatile Disney character ever.
Whoever approved the most recent adaptation of Goofy should be banned from all things Disney for life. He looks terrifying
That whole series is terrifying!!

Yay! Goofy is my all-time favorite Disney character! Its hard to say what appearance is my favorite, but I'm not the biggest fan of the "everyman" version. Even as a kid when I'd see those old shorts run on Dinsey Channel I felt like that was just a different guy in the world tgat populated with Goofy-type people. I still love the classic trio shorts the most. I love bumbling Goofy in anything. "Some'in' wrong here?" Is my favorite Goofy phrase, followed closely by that iconic yell!
Man I wasn’t thinking I was gonna get much nostalgia from this but the second we got to goof troop and beyond stages I just got wacked with early 2000’s feelings of childhood
Honestly when it comes to the latest version he just...well I'll come out and say it, he looks and acts like a crack head. It just makes me very uncomfortable, I like the 90's Goof Troop Version as not only was he my first real look at Goofy growing up but he is also a very relatable goofy, just some dad who wants to help his son and screws up along the way in comedic ways, a good combo of the George Era of Goofy and the Classic Slapstick.
Philip Kippel you know, you shouldn’t force people to like something you like. You should try respecting other people’s opinions.
Kingdom Hearts 3 literally just came out... missed out on some solid clickbait there.
I’m assuming that’s why this (and my Donald video) is performing well anyway.
The OP was better off using footage from KH1 and KH2, as the game was one of the first 3d rendering attempts at any of the Disney characters. I feel that he should completely redo this video to include the excised KH designs instead of releasing a supplemental video.
So glad I stumbled on this so detailed and I learned so much about the character lol great work
A Goofy Movie is most certainly my favorite Goofy appearance
But can he take down Shaggy?
