I like the idea of a sea monster attacking a U-boat, but the facts that exist prove otherwise. Incidentally there was a U.S Navy ship that was forced to return to port because of a mishap with it's underwater sensors. It turned out a giant squid had attached itself to the underside of the ship, unlike this incident they found traces of claws that are found on the tentacles of squids on the rubber parts of the ship.
This was the gulf of Adan stuff right?
Yeah I've seen something on here about this. IIRC, if the claws they found were in proportion with known species of squid, the creature had to have been enormous, the biggest ever seen.
Specifically the rubber parts of the boat which house the radar.
The 1978 USS Stein incident. Ship was testing a towed sonar array when the creature attacked. The sonar was destroyed and the ship suffered significant damage and had to return to San Diego.
Yeah, a giant squid supposedly attacked the USS Stein. There are several youtube videos about it.
I've heard of a story from WW1 that a U-boat torpedoed a tanker and with the explosion a dinosaur rose from the sea.

It was not dinosaur or mosasaur, it was a Kraken, an octopus with giga mammoth size than other sea creatures. Its tentacles, can wreck a big boat with just one tentacle hit the boat. None of dinosaur of the sea still live after the tragedy of big doom that wipe out most dinosaur and especially after ice age. Left only Kraken as the king of the ocean. Even US biggest aircraft carrier only 1/20 size of Kraken. So yes it can sunk a submarine.
I love how civilian and military sailors have seen sea monsters for centuries and yet people still think men who are familiar and experienced with life at sea are liars.

This is the THIRD time this year I've heard a reference to a giant sea monster in the Irish sea - and all three were separate stories that took place in different decades. That CAN'T be a coincidence.

The US Navy knows whats out there, but they ain't telling
I am 70. When I was about 15, there was a story in one of the papers which mentioned a US submarine having been stopped mid ocean. Finally, the sub freed itself and continued to port. I can't remember but when it either surfaced or when it reached port, the crew found large squid tentacles wrapped around the sub that had ripped off the squid. They measured its suckers and determined its massive size. I have googled this story but can't find anything. Take it for what it is but it definitely was reported in the paper.

I've heard tales of the scars on the sides of Sperm Whales. The sizes of them were like out of a 1950s science fiction movie.
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL That was in 1976 The damage was caused to the USS Stein. Giant and Colossal squid do this because of the sonar. They think it's a sperm whale. You can read up on the damage caused in Sea Creatures and the Problem of Equipment Damage found on the usni website.
@@Andulvar The military sonar can cause 140db sound underwater which will damage any living creatures ears if not kill them. The attack could have been a simple act of aggression also.
That there's a story about a certain Jonas in the bible doesn't mean it really happened.
It seems another German Uboat captain had similar problems - the U28 supposedly encountered a sea monster - Curious Wolrd tell the story on their channel. And, many years ago, I read an account of a Royal Navy ship which encountered some kind of sea serpent or monster in the North Sea during the Great War, which they promptly used for target practice.

Im 61 years old, i was part of a tactical diving team tasked in underwater repairs.
One dive in 1976 is eternally etched into my mind. Iv seen this creature along side a oil tanker. It was over 60ft long, estimated weight of around 100 tonne. It glided past the rear rudder while i stayed deadly still. Unbelievable

Interesting thing is there's some truth to these seas stories. For years people brushed the kraken of fashion a myth. But that myth turned true when we found out about huge squids in the ocean known as the giant squid and the colossal squid.
That myth didnt turn true, thats like saying the yeti myth is real because we discovered gorillas
The people that supposedly 'seen' the kraken describe it huge, capable of destroying ships, even swallowing it
The colossal and giant squid is nowhere big enough to do those, nor does live in places the kraken supposedly lives in

@@weirdguylol The largest colossal squids may get to 1,500 pounds/33 feet in length. If one was near the surface and had it's tentacles on a boat you'd never know how large it actually was.
Commodore Sir Arthur Rostron, hero of the Titanic rescue, says in his autobiography that he came across a sea monster of some sort during his career while entering Queenstown harbor.
That “sea monster” was actually my mother-in-law.

At 6:23 you have a picture of a Kriegsmarine sailor. Obviously this isn't Kretch as he died in 1919 at 33 years old. As far as Sea Monsters go, the Ocean is deep and large. Anything is possible.

I uncovered many lies about that time but you'll never see that information in the msm.

Seamen as far back as ancient Greece have seen sea monsters. We know more about space than we do our own oceans.
I remember hearing a story of U-boat survivors in the North Atlantic Being pulled out of their lifeboats by a Giant Squid It was put down to shock and dehydration hallucinations
It was a British cargo ship sunk, there is a documentary about the incident. They interview one of the survivors and he should the scars on his leg from the suckers from the tentacles. For the first couple days of them being in the water, the sharks were picking people off, but on the third day the sharks left and the giant squid showed up. It was found that the color of the 'mae west' life vest (which was red at the time) drew in the squid, the color was changed because of this .

I would guess the U boat commander made up the story to account for his failure to sink any ships.

how could he fail if he had not used single torpedo on his uboat, so your saying he just surrendered without a fight for no reason, a uboat that cant go water in combat is a sitting duck, a uboat is not armored its not built to take damage from ships with artillery.

Worse than ‘the dog ate my homework.’ By the way I think sea monsters could still exist (I believe the Earth is young so it is a reasonable assumption, plus there are many many sightings)
@@markgadsby5568 sightings and evidence are 2 very different things and people are liars. There are no sea monsters (especially ones around with dinosaurs) that we already haven't discovered. 4.3 billion years old may be young on the universal scale but a "young" planet has fuck all to do with potential "sea monsters".
I used to work in an unheated office. it would get down to 50F. the people working on the shop floor in 40-45F wore a heavy shirt or light jacket and were fine. I was sitting at a desk wearing a puffer coat, typically good for 20F when walking. But sitting in the office with the jacket for a few hours, you get cold and cannot warmup without exercise.

When I grew up in Southern California the beach was king. All roads led to the beach. We sunbathed and threw frisbee during the day and camped and made Bar-b-Q at night. And we swam. Boy did we swim. I routinely body surfed and swam hundreds of yards past the surf into the sea without even a life vest or a care. Now I won't even dip a big toe into the ocean because of what I know is out there. It's amazing that I survived my childhood with the many crazy things I did!

@@onthecase1002 Yeah, the movie Jaws changed my attitude... Who knows how many big-ass sharks swam right past my dangling legs but weren't interested for whatever reason... Maybe I farted too much and scared 'em away... :) Then they started protecting the seals and the sharks returned. Now it's dangerous as hell!!! But wow man, it's MUCH colder up there in Santa Cruz! You must have Polar Bear blood! More Great White Sharkish too! There's OFTEN blood in the water off the Golden Gate Bridge out by the Farallones.

A little like the story of drilling a tunnel for trains below Storebælt in Denmark! The Tunnel Boring Machine for the job could operate fully submerged, so when hitting a watery point in the bottom above, it shouldn't have been a problem! Sadly a smart guy had put cables through the watertight door in front, just behind the drilling plate, so all the machine and till then built tunnel became filled with water, which stopped the work for month! Luckily no lives became lost!! But today we are anyway able to ride in trains below the Bælt.

The submarine in the intro is a German Typ VII C submarine, the "workhose " and backbone of the german navy during the battle of the Atlantic. The other shown submarines were the predecessors boats Typ VII B. This typ of German submarine was immortalized in the movie " The boat" from 1981

There was a recent TV program over here which included the story of this incident. The conclusion (if the accounts of a monster were actually true) was that it could have been an abnormally large male walrus (hence the teeth glistening in the moonlight) which climbed onto the deck to beach itself. In the shock of a sudden encounter in the dark the crew could imagine anything!

Today i read about a sunken city found in Lake Lucerne estimated to be 3000 years old. We dont even know whats in our lakes. 80% of the ocean is unexplored. We do not know what is there or not there. Its ridiculous that we say we do.

Same as Admiral Villeneuve who commanded the French/Spanish fleet at Trafalgar - was taken alive and spent some time in England where he gave his parole and was allowed complete freedom of movement. A year later he was returned to France and whilst on his way to see Napoleon committed 'suicide' by stabbing himself to death (six times in the left lung and once through the heart).

I wasn't giving this story much credence until they mentioned the U-Boat Skipper dying of unknown causes in 1919. Maybe the boat really was attacked by a sea monster & Germany didn't want the captain spreading that around.

I had a feeling there would be some evidence to cast suspicion on this whole story. Whether those crew members were telling the truth remains to be seen, but I feel it's more likely that an unremarkable captain messed up and told a lie to cover himself, than a giant animal attacking the submarine.

The Haunting of UB-65. Another great WW1 Submarine story. Last diver who tried to get to it in 2019 died getting near it. Creepy stuff, check it out.

Not worth it. The "haunting" goes back to a journalist from Austria who wrote about it in the 90s, Viktor Farkas was his name. He made that whole story up.
EDIT:
btw, the correct designation is not "UB-65" but "SM U 65" (Seiner Majestät Unterseeboot 65). Our U-boats just have the callsign "U", because "Unterseeboot" is one word, and "U-Boot" is just the shortened version / military-slang.
EDIT 2: ... there have been both designations, "U" and "UB", although I have no idea what the "B" refers to. "UG"-class also was planned.
@@zahgurim7838 Thanks for the information. It's too bad, I was really liking the story. The fact that a diver actually died not long ago trying to reach the wreck only added a level of morbidity to it.
@@jamiemerian9736 I was not aware of the diver, but I guess that more likely happened due to the dangers of wreck diving and has nothing to do with any kind of "curse".
Well, to my surprise (while doing more research on the topic) I found out that I was WRONG: there were indeed TWO classes of submarines in service of the Reichsmarine with SAME numbers, and one class actually HAD the designation "UB".
("UB"-series was developed as small single-hull-class for coastal waters, but later became a "full size" submarine with two hulls. They kept the designation "UB" for ...reasons (?) )
So SM U 65 and SM UB 65 are two DIFFERENT ships and I had to research it all again :)
...and I guess that's HOW the "mystery" started: the data of both submarines seem to have gotten mixed up.
Here is what I found:
Official data of SM U 65, taken from historical german sources:
- launched 21st of March 1916 (Baunummer/number 249) in Kiel (not Belgium as stated by Farkas), Germaniawerft
- entered service at May 11th 1916
- commanders: -Hermann von Fischel (May 1916 - July 1918), Kapitänleutnant
-Gustav Siess (August - September 1918), Kapitänleutnant
(not to be confused with Gustav Sieß, commander of U 73 and U 33)
-Clemens Wickel (September - October 1918), Kapitänleutnant
- part of IV. U-Boot-Flottille till November 1916 (North Sea), later part of U-Flottille Mittelmeer (Mediterranean Sea)
- participated in 11 operations/missions with a total of 48 ships (77.715 BRT/tons) of other nations sunk, including "Athos" (France) and "Caledonia" (Great Britain)
- Selbstversenkung (self-sinking) 29th of October 1918 to avoid being captured by enemy near the coast of Croatia, no casualties among the crew
Official data of SM UB 65, taken from same sources as mentioned above:
- launched 26th of July 1917 (number unknown) in Hamburg (still not Belgium), AG Vulcan Stettin Werft
- entered service at August 18th 1917
- commander: -Martin Schelle, Kapitänleutnant
- part of V. U-Boot-Flottille till April 1918, later part of II. U-Boot-Flottille till July 1918
- participated in 6 operations/missions with a total of 9 ships (22.461 BRT/tons) of other nations sunk including "Arbutus" (Great Britain) and "Maria Jose" (Portugal).

The fact that UB 65 had only one commander throughout its time of service, but U 65 had three might be the key to the origin of the ghost story.
Both submarines had no casualties among officers and there are no clues about "unusual high numbers of" casualties among the crew either prior to their sinking.
The officers on U 65 changed due to normal causes, promotions, health reasons, etc.; but UB 65 indeed was lost in an accident (assumed). I believe the changes in command of U 65 have been assigned to UB 65, due to confusion between the two different classes.
The "Maria Jose" for example was sunk by UB 65 4 days AFTER UB 65 allegedly was sunk by an exploding torpedo onboard, so this part of the story is made up, too.
Truth is we don't know what exactly happened to UB 65, but it never had a change of command. We also know exactly what happened to U 65 and it had 3 changes of command. Mix up both facts and you'll get an excellent ghost story...

Indeed what had happened.
What about the incident during WW 2, the story goes something like this, I'm not sure of the type of battleship, but during a sea adventure something messed up the radar system and when they went to port to repair and to relieve the troops they checked under the ship and they also discovered the fabric that helps with the radar /sonar was rip to shreds and the weren't in treacherous waters to do that type of damage. As if something clawed it up.

Orcas off the Iberian peninsula have been attacking sailing ships and biting off their rudders. I don't see why an irate Orca or huge shark couldn't investigate a large, noisy, submarine.
@@auroraborealis6009 attack submarine length is 377 feet, the length of a great white is 13 feet, the length of an orca is 26 feet. A sub would hit them like a bug on the windshield and submarines are silent.
@@johnjinglehimmerschmitt9802 Submarines are far from silent, especially a WWI or WWII sub. If, as in the above stort, the sub had fabric associated with its radar shredded by an unknown monster, it makes far more sense to assume that it was a known species.

I remember watching some show where they attempted to explain this encounter rationally to no success in my mind. I believe they posited that a giant walrus had attacked the vessel. Or a larger species of seal or something like that. It was good for a laugh.
He said the sea monster had a horny and small head. That is literally the exact opposite of the very large, streamlined heads that all known mosasaurs had.
He said more than that.

Damn, great video! I never heard of the fate of U85 before and she sank within view of where I live! The only sea monsters in those waters these days are Royal Navy nuclear subs heading to Faslane and possibly some lurking Russian subs too.

Very interesting - one thing bothers me though. If these cables were fitted before sailing, how did she dive whilst en-route from Heligoland to the North Channel and if fitted whilst at sea, the water entering the sub would have been noticed as soon as she dived afterwards. Surely no man intelligent enough to command a U Boat would allow cables to be run through the hatch, knowing that this would stop the hatch from closing?.

It reminds me of that one U-boat or sub during world war II that was bomb on the shore of England that had the surface because the batteries have been flooded by a toilet on the sub that the captain had screwed up.
