I remember the time I met Marven. I think he's batting coach in Sri Lankan team at that time. It's 2012 T20 World Cup & Sri Lanka team practicing in Asgiriya ground. Me & my friend go for an autograph. Marven and Mahela discussing something in the middle of the pitch & we approached. They saw us and say "get out & come another time" 😅

Atapattu is the only player who I've seen commentators spending time praising his forward defense. Such was it's perfection that they would show multiple replays, and explain each element. Unimaginable in today's fast paced nonsensical cricket.
I can recall 3 clear instances where the commentators were praising both his backfoot and frontfoot defensive shots. Once was during the 1997 Sri Lanka's tour of South Africa where Marvan scored 2 half centuries in both innings of the first test match. He had just started opening in test matches and was fresh from his double century against Zimbabwe in Kandy. Dave Richardson was the commentator and even though Aravinda played a scintillating knock, he said that Marvan's innings was the most impressive due to the way he countered the pace and bounce of Donald, Pollock and Ntini by going onto the backfoot and defending the ball skillfully. Whenever Marvan played a backfoot defensive shot with his trademark high elbow and the bat perfectly straight, Richardson would replay it several times stating that any youngster wanted to learn how to play the backfoot defence, go no further, just study this batsman. The other was when Marvan hit 185 at Lords and Paul Allott who was commentating, was gushing over his backfoot defense, replaying it several times. And the last was Robin Jackman when India toured Sri Lanka in 2002. Zaheer Khan bowled a good length ball over the wicket and Marvan played a picture perfect forward defensive shot and Jackman was praising the perfect play with Zaheer Khan bowling a good ball but Marvan countering it with a perfect defensive shot with no daylight between the bat and pad.
Growing up this shot by Atapattu used to give me goosebumps. So elegant and efficient. Respect for the legend

Before 2000 we had a criticism that sl bads men only hit around. That days mawan and aravinda kept us on top with their classic book shots.
