The fact that his rage against the system is then utilized by the system is what's frightening to me. His rage was packaged and is used as a way for people who feel like him to have a vicarious cathartic release of their anger. This prevents them from actually getting angry enough to do something damaging to the system.

This is why people need to stop bandwagonning Goverment led "Movements". If they are promoting "Xyz movement", and bloating your egos by putting a camera in your face...Something is wrong.
I believe this is why so many people get on board. Petty people, who have never been on a team before, chasing their 15 seconds of fame, and the approval of the misguided masses. Then, when they are confronted on the issue, they just fall back to the same Evil Machine to defend them, and silence the others.

As Mark Fisher (among many others) wrote, the unique characteristic of this current stage of capitalism is how it incorporates and assimilates critiques of it, turns them into new products to be consumed and sells them. In an absolute monarchy or a dictatorship the control is much more strict, often straight up banning the use of certain terms or certain rights or freedoms (like that of assembly, or going on strike). It's the difference between soft power (influence, mass media), and hard power (repression, state violence).

Just food for thought: how do we know that Bing is seeing the outside world at the end? It still looks like screens, just ones that have a nicer view. @Angel of Death Its sad man, where i live prison has 3 tasks:
      1. Punishment
      2. Rehabilitation
      3. Keeping someone dangerous away from society
And the judge needs to decide how much each part weighs in the final decision.
That often leads to pretty low sentences, which are often criticised, but it works; there's a pretty high percentage of succeeded rehabilitation.
For example I was arrested for attempted manslaughter which was later changed to heavy assault (don't know the correct translation), I had to go to prison for around 2 months, go to a supervised group home for a few months and then got parole for effectively 3 years with a suspended sentence of 2 years.
Didnt get in trouble after that and changed, as do many others.
The only stories i hear from America are people getting arrested for smt small, getting sent to prison for a long time and then coming back a real criminal.

I have always been very anti establishment in my life but I play the game, work, taxes, enjoy life - I don’t have any social medias outside YT and try and keep my eyes on my hobbies, cars, games, cooking - idle hands right? But my gf is obsessed with TT and insta. I get it. Short bursts of entertainment, pleasure systems in the brain, etc etc. but to me, it’s just another distraction by media formats to keep us complacent while the powers at be control the world, against our favor.
I am not talking about the race for the presidency, or who is in the White House, those put in front of us, are another mere distraction, a puppet, a talking head controlled themselves by the men behind the curtain, the ones we will never see. I am talking about Big Pharma, Big Oil, Google, Walmart, etc

The silver lining I took from this episode after years have passed and falling into the same position, is the part where he tries to better himself and the ending. 1. @Phillion hey man, I loved this episode of Black Mirror. I've maybe rewatched this episode upwards of 10 times since it was released. I'm great you told this story in shorter way for others, because the lessons are really important, and it truly captures the plight of consumerism and compliance (and of the manufactured rebellion). Regardless of how the bleak nature of the story telling is, which is harnessed as an actually incredible powerful narrative tool (you see its use in books like 1984 or The Handmaids Tale), there are always little bits you keep picking up on; every rewatch. Even today, I don't think I fully noticed or considered your take on the wooden penguin till you had pointed it out (due to how deep in thought I usually am, by that sequence haha)!
It is intriguing, that some people may consider the ending as happy, as it should really inspire the exact opposite like you say. I personally theorised, that the image of the outside world (at the end) was in fact still a projection/screen. And was a kind of more truthful replication of what the outside world looks like, that comes with "making it", in comparison to the total fabrication of reality; being only alluded to and illuminated with the Mii esque grapthics. Showcasing that even those higher up than the workers, but not quite elite; are still being carrot and sticked, given a taste but still at arms length. In accordance to lead, and to allow the true puppet master's (or elite elite, if you will xD) to live isolated and without fear of responsibility or rebellion. In essence, even the hierarchy is manufactured: to appear to be curated by the consumers, for the consumers, but to mirage the actuality of the system itself.
Which reminds me, that they only theorise that the apple is more organic (like workplace gossip). But there is still doubt. That everything is in fact a facade. Reality thus (or what we take for granted in our's at least), is something that has been completely transformed and commoditised
Great video boss man, keep it up :)

I think the biggest thing I got from that episode was how unreal of an actor Daniel Kaluuya is. That performance on the stage at 8:09 feels SO real.
Also, I don't think this is even a view of the outside world at the end. Being as it so closely resembles the screens we see before, I saw it as another hint towards him "making it", but nothing really changing in terms of fulfillment. The society is still exactly where it was, and the wheel keeps on moving, literally and figuratively.

I was surprised Philion made that remark at the end, however he was obviously identified with the character and was projecting himself and on more than one occassion. Anyone who watched the episode understood that Bing was still a slave and that he despised what he now was, because - although impoverished, exhausted and betrayed not only by the world but by his self as well - his soul was known to him and what he knew he could never unknow. Philion was making a personal statement because he knew kids looked up to him and thought "streaming" to be the be all end all and all suffering is to cease when you are well off. What Philion perhaps doesn't understand or doesn't want to disclose is that we all face the same problems when it comes to living among other human beings and/or - for some - becoming aware of our predicament and the inescapable existential dread that follows in its revelations; our problems, however, differ when it comes to material existence and the level of conditioned freedom one can attain. There is no pure sense of freedom in this world unless it originates in the mind and there is no freedom unless it is of the mind.

I really disagree with your takeaway from the ending. "Everyone is against the system unless you're a part of it" is a pretty weak take away from a pretty clear (imo) example of how radical identities and resistance itself in a capitalistic system are commodified and sold back to the people. You were right in saying that Bing isn't truly free, but he isn't a part of the system, he's still clearly exploited by people who run things and kept complacent as his labor is used to entertain the masses.

    • @adamj2340
