I want to thank all the good folks who have discovered this video and watched it again and again, pushing it over half a million views. Not bad for a song that was only really a soundcheck tune to warm up on. Lets make it a million! Unheard of for a fiddle tune.
+WilMaring A very beautiful lady picking that bass fiddle in a quarter beat at the very beginning. I was fascinated you could come in on key on time and pick up the tempo. Everyone did this song justice and then some. Thanks to all of you.
+WilMaring I have a young (14 yrs. old) beginning banjo student who loves this tune and wanted to learn it. She's only been playing about 5 months, so I worked up a "beginner" arrangement for her. We're not up to this speed yet, but I have every confidence she will get there. Loved listening; great job on a beautiful old tune!
Wil--I'm one of those who has to watch this every so often, a mando and guitar player who just loves this version and three people having a good time. Thanks!
After decades of playing guitar, (heavy metal) I developed a taste for mandolin. So about 6 months ago I took the plunge. This classic song in the version you uploaded has inspired me to practice and enjoy grass roots music.
I've watched this so many times I've lost count. I love Doc Watson's version, but I honestly believe this is the smoothest and tightest version I've ever heard. Simply awesome work.
Kelly Harriger Agreed. Best version EVER. Mike Cross’s version comes a very close second but this is the absolute best. 2000 of the 743k views are mine, easy.
dont know how many times i,ve played this . what lovely home grown music . oh dear me i miss my old time musical days and nights i had with friends all those years ago , mostly i just sat and listened for memory. my god i love music from opera to country there i stand being a lucky person .thank you fretboardmusic , sincerely tony lee , melbourne australia..
I've literally watched this about twenty times in the past 24 hours. I'm teaching myself mandolin and the mandolin player looks like he's having a blast.
I've watched this over and over again since I first picked up the mandolin, which is about seven years ago. I love this and never tire of it. The interplay between the three of them is wonderful. Something seems to happen towards the end and the three of them share a few smiles. Charming and beautifully played and performed.
As a 'Folkie' Guitarist of old, I've heard & played many renditions of this over decades!!... But this is by far the best version I have ever heard!!!. Simplicity, (regarding the number of players), detailed melody & harmonies including perfect accompanied syncopation... Could not be better!
I really enjoyed this as well as hearing Brad and Robert play and jam at the Acoustic Music Camp a few years ago. Thanks for sharing your love of acoustic music.
I could listen to you guys all day long! I play that tune with some local (Knoxville TN) old time musicians, but not with that fluidity and clarity. Nice going.
Three fine artist. I feel so priveledged to have attended one of Brad Davis's workshops. This was in the 80's before he became part of the established music world. His skill on the guitar is phenominal. I recommend his DVDs and lessons. Wil Mare is one excellent bass player and singer in her own right. Robert Bowman's skills speak for themselves.
you guys started an epidemic with this rousing early version here on CZcams. This remains my favorite, too much talent divided between only three people.
Just found this and it made my day. Magic! There is something basically joyful in the sound these people make together. Listening to all their stuff now, but there isn't enough. I love how they change up their instruments. And the recording quality is really good for a youtube vid, that bass is rich and mudless. Wil's voice (on a different tune) reminds me a lot of Deb Talan of The Weepies. Somebody needs to name this non-band trio jam thing so us fans have something to call y'all.
Wonderful! I can´t stop watching and listening. A lovely version of this beautiful tune, played so well, unobstrusive und unagitated, but with lot of feeling an virtuosity! Great compliment also to you bass line, Wil !! I love this video so much , - thx !!
This was perfection at it's best. The quality and clarity from all three instruments was unmistakably done by true artisans of an art we don't get to hear much of on mainstream radio or any entertainment venue as far as that goes. I'll be playing along with my guitar many times in hopes I can learn the small details that makes this great. Thank you so much guys and to the person uploading for the rest of us to enjoy.
This is an awesome version of this classic. I actually like watching the players enjoy performing the song. All three are excellent musicians. Kudos for excellence.
Still one of my all-time favorites! I’ve been watching this video for 16 years!
Been watching this for two years, absolutely love it mate
Watching this for 7 years now. Since I bought my first mandolin

Yer visiting York in December. Might make it!

Do more soundchecks!!! LoL!!!

One of the finest pieces of music I’ve ever heard!
This video has been on CZcams for 16 years and I'm just now seeing it. Better late than never. Delightful!
Welcome to the party 😅
I love Robert's sliding lick at 2:22, Brad's joyful laugh, and Robert's sly grin. Great stuff :)
Whiskey Before Breakfast - the title alone is amazing
indeed😊
every year at the Grenna bluegrass festival (in Sweden) We do that on saturday morning after fridays picking in our cabin. 39 years so far!!

Glad it inspired you:-)
Beautiful ! ,please keep playing.
decades of heavy metal? hes lucky he can still hear
Me too
You are not alone. Grew up loving metal. Still love it, but I play and sing in a roots band that does bluegrass, Irish and Old time country tunes!
I have watched this 50 + times.Just completely amazing players,great timing and sequence,just wow. 100-100
I've watched this so many times I've lost count. I love Doc Watson's version, but I honestly believe this is the smoothest and tightest version I've ever heard. Simply awesome work.
I agree (even though it's just my first time watching this rendition). The smoothest, most resonant I've ever heard . . . a joy. Thank you!
Kelly Harriger Agreed. Best version EVER. Mike Cross’s version comes a very close second but this is the absolute best. 2000 of the 743k views are mine, easy.
100 percent perfection!!

I have no idea how I originally found this jam but come back to it time and again , I consider it the Holy Grail of acoustic fretwork.
This video is a perfect example about how playing rhythm good can make a song 100 times better
I'm another rock&roll guy who has listened to this wonderful performance countless times and spent days learning from it. Fantastic playing, y'all!
I've literally watched this about twenty times in the past 24 hours. I'm teaching myself mandolin and the mandolin player looks like he's having a blast.
Hands down, best cover of this song.
Incredible musicianship and style. Can't imagine a more flawless performance, done with joy and passion.
agreed, pure joy! 🙂
Keep coming back to this video! Excellent, beautiful music!
One of my favorite songs to listen to. These guys make us all smile while looking effortless doing it!!
Completely beautiful...and today, I am having whiskey before breakfast.
Smooth as silk! The young lady playing bass is flawless....fluid.
top notch right there..Brad is stoked, Robert's tone and phrasing are out of sight, Wil is heavy grooving. One of the finest vids on youtube.

Just a realization they created a masterpiece
SO GLAD THIS CAME AROUND AGAIN....ALWAYS ENJOY THIS AND LOVE TO SEE WIL'S FLASHING SMILE ON THE SPECIAL RIFFS!
I thought that I'd tire of this. Never was I so wrong. Amazing

The best version of the song that has ever been played! Thank you!
Your playing always brings a smile to my face. Thanks.
Saw Robert Bowlin fiddle with the Osbornes. He is an American treasure.
Outstanding from top to bottom. Tight.. Timing... Tasteful.
What an absolute joy. I love these guys!!!
It's always so nice hearing musicians playing together.
I really enjoyed this as well as hearing Brad and Robert play and jam at the Acoustic Music Camp a few years ago. Thanks for sharing your love of acoustic music.
Nice job. My fingers don't do that any more, so it is great to see and hear this song done by good musicians.
Julian Lage......Wow
I could listen to you guys all day long! I play that tune with some local (Knoxville TN) old time musicians, but not with that fluidity and clarity. Nice going.
