  • Sergio Gabriel Martínez (born February 21, 1975) is an Argentine former professional boxer who competed from 1997 to 2014. He held the unified WBC, WBO, Ring magazine, and lineal middleweight titles from 2010 to 2014, making six successful defenses of the latter two titles. Martínez's 50-month reign as lineal champion ranks as one of the longest in middleweight history. He also fought at light middleweight, where he held the IBO title from 2003 to 2005, and the WBC interim title in 2008 (later elevated to full world champion status the following year).
    Martínez reached a career high ranking as the third best boxer in the world, pound for pound, behind Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, as voted by most sporting news and boxing publications, including Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Yahoo! Sports, and The Ring. In 2010 he received Fighter of the Year awards by both The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America, as well as The Ring's Knockout of the Year for his victory against Paul Williams. The WBC named him their Boxer of the Year in 2010 and 2012. A southpaw, Martínez was known as a fast and athletic fighter and his style has been described as "crowd-pleasing",partly because of his tendency to fight with his hands down when out of his opponents' range.
    Outside the ring, Martínez has been an active spokesperson in the fight against bullying and domestic violence against women. He is the author of a book, Corazón de Rey ("Heart of a King"), and is said to be working on a second book.

    Martinez was a wild card in an era of weak middleweights. Had he taken the g fight instead of Chavez Jr maybe we would of been lucky to see a true trilogy. Such is boxing

    The trainer was so scared of the doctor stopping the fight he gave him no instructions at all from the moment he sat down in between round 10 and 11

    stuck in re watching middle weights of 2008 -2015 or the pre GGG era. it wasn't much going on but martinez was the best of the era. lots of uk and euro based guys at the top like Sturm, macklin, murray and darren barker and geale (australia). you had legitimate middle weights like pavlik and andy lee and chavez jr. the euro based guys were skilled but small with no power. the big guys were slow and all had issues. martinez' best comp was blown up welterweights paul williams and cotto.

      Can you explain just a tad better what you mean? Kelly isn't slow, Martinez took advantage of an un fit Pavlik, Pavlik operating on 70% at the most, not his usual self

      @@martytdd1606 no offense meant. pavlik may have been injured and slowing down at that time. martinez was just coming into his own. pavlik was ending his reign. no knocks on either guy. in 2015 cotto beat an injured so now slow martinez. that's just how it works in sports you know no knock on anyone.

      Pavlik had staph infection prior to this fight.... he was not quite right and had a big weight cut to make 160 after fighting bhop at 170

    • @skinnykinny582
      @skinnykinny582 Před 4 lety

      @@makeithappencaptain sounds quite reasonable. funny how many times it is a non fight physical issue that puts guys away. martinez' knee injury late in his career. progressive shoulder and hand problems for other guys. detached retinas in sparring for some guys. the golovkin calf injury training could be his downfall. those heal very very slowly especially at his age.
