  • A look at the three principal Cross Country Skiing binding systems. There are two camps: Salomon SNS (Salomon Nordic System) and NNN (New Nordic Norm). SNS can be divided into the older SNS/Profil and newer SNS/Pilot.
Salomon now back the NNN system with their Prolink binding. This has the same hole pattern as SNS (so makes the upgrade easy) but works the same as NNN.
As an historic note: SNS/Pilot boots will work in SNS/Profil bindings but you need the guide with a groove for the second bar in the boot.

Thanks! Very helpful. This video is from 2021. I have older skis with SNS bindings (but skis are coming apart) and just researched and purchase new skis and boots in March 2024. Turnamic bindings system was developed by Fischer and Rossignol and is used on all new Fischer and Rossignol cross-country skis since about 2018. Info on current binding systems and compatibility: Turnamic bindings are compatible with NNN system. NNN ski boots can be used on Turnamic bindings and Turnamic ski boots can be used with NNN bindings. (NNN = New Nordic Norm.) There is also the ProLink system by Salomon. Turnamic, ProLink and NNN are all interchangeable with one another. Turnamic bindings have some nice features and advantages. NNN has been around for decades. Salomon went to ProLink (which is compatible with NNN and Turnamic) in 2016 (and began phasing out their SNS system).
Mounting plates go between the binding and the ski, and there are some non-compatibility situations between those three systems. However, if you purchase skis with bindings already mounted, then you do not have to worry about mounting plates.
Turnamic gets his name by the combination of the words Turn and Dynamic. Do not be confuse Turnamic binding with Turmeric nutrition or health supplements (haha) - Turmeric is a common spice that comes from the root of Curcuma longa. It contains a chemical called curcumin, which might reduce inflammation (swelling).

At last. A plain, simple and most important, clear explanation of the binding. Thanks

What is a binding? Is it a part of the skis or something that you purchase separately and install on the skis? If so, are skis generic or binding neutral or certain skis only work with certain bindings? This is so frustrating. I’ve been wanting to get into cross country skiing for years, but haven’t been able to find any information. Every video or article I’ve seen are for those who already understand some of it.

SNS Pilot boots are compatible with Profil bindings (a bit newer ones than in the video), as they have special wider transverse cut for accomodating the second Pilot axle. Though the flexor can be a problem as Pilot boots are not meant to be used with flexors and the boots dont have that cutout in the front for the flexor like Profil boots. The flexor can be cut a bit if needed. So let’s say it’s 80% compatible:)

Thank you for this information as there is not much information about bindings that I have found as helpful as your video. With your experience in equipment, do you find any real significant difference between cross countey brands beside binding systems used (like quality, comfort, etc)?

I may not be a good enough skier but I don't really notice any difference between any of the binding types I've tried. I don't like the Salomon Pilot binding because I find the mechanism and two bars on the boot sole get clogged with snow that can be hard to clear.

I am having difficulty getting in and out of my nnn rottefella bindings. I lost a flexor because it came loose earlier. I think the bar into the binding part will take practice lol. Whereas, regular alpine bindings can be jumped into blindfolded. Is it just me or are these bindings difficult to get in and out of?
