Ok i HAVE to tell this little anecdote. I went and saw The Lorax in theaters when it came out. I bought a bottle of soda and wanted to dispose of the empty container after drinking it. I looked around for a recycling bin and couldn't find one so I asked someone who was sweeping up. He told me the had put the bin away so they could put up the display for The Lorax and that I would have to just put it in the garbage. Does anyone else see the irony of this?
debra mckinney it’s something but not irony
Pisces Removing recycling bin for a poster of the lorax, a movie about caring about trees..... sounds like irony to me.
debra mckinney Definitely. And I run a roleplay blog for a talking pig!
whoa what's with the hostility dude?
debra mckinney wow..

The onceler in the original 1970s version is not evil, just misguided. The Onceler and the other people’s faces are never shown, which is perfect for explaining that anybody who is shortsighted can destroy the environment
The problem with Dr. Seus books is that they are too short to work in film. The reason Horton hears a Who workers so well is because the story is light hearted enough to work as a comedy, kinda? With the Grinch and the Lorax that's MUCH HARDER!!!!!!!!
@@orangeslash1667 "I took Song of Ice and Fire and tried to make it a comedy, it's really hard and I don't know why."
The problem is people can't destroy the environment massive corporations that contribute 80% of all global pollution can destroy the environment.
I’d honestly prefer the original Dr. Suess cartoons from the 1970’s it actually respected his material and told the stories the correct way
@@theretrokid1984 At least we have Biggering.
Here's a fun fact, recently released was a deleted song from the movie that would've helped the message better. It's called, "biggering." It was the demo for, "How Bad Can I Be?"
It shows greed slowly consuming the Onceler, rather than him being manipulated by his family, and it captures the emotion the story had. It's longer than the other song, is a rock song, and includes one or two lines from the original animated Lorax and even makes lines from the other song work better.
Amazing how one song can help a films message, and it's replaced with the more dumb downed version.
Hit too close to home
No that would be slightly complex. And god forbid we have a kid movie that would treat kids like they are smart. We need more studios that aren’t Pixar to do that

“A 12-year-old boy should always be voiced by a 26-year-old man, right?” Then Gravity Falls comes in with a 12-year-old boy character voiced by a 32-year-old man.
Mary Hartman actually, Jason Ritter really does sound like that.
Did u know Timmy Turner, a 10 Year Old Boy, who's voiced by An Adult Woman?
Julio Peinado You mean Tara Strong? Yeah, I even had the pleasure of meeting her at a couple of conventions.

שחר א. She’s awesome
This hurts even more when you see the concept art and original material. It was meant to be a much darker movie more akin to the old 2d animated movie, with a badass rock opera villain song.
And Illumination, in all their infinite wisdom, played the 'It's too dark for kids' card.
Thank you minions. Thank you SO much.
If only they could sell the concept art and original material to Warner Bros., they could make it better and more like the special.
That was Despicable me fault and will always be
Like the people all reading the book at the end of thus video I imagine all the people seeing the original concept art and listening to biggering and taking in what could've been
Yes thank you so much for bringing us the song that was put in the movie and not the dark one and- Oh. You were being sarcastic were you?
Ironically, saying that making the movie dark would be “too much for kids” is literally just bullshit. Kids absolutely love horror and dark themes, just look at the history of fnaf or undertale both games with heavily detailed lore and violent stories that would already be disturbing to an adult. Kids can handle dark themes, but illumination can’t

Biggering is the best song from the Lorax and it isn’t even in the Lorax.
And the reason, is that it describes perfectly what the producers are.
FACTS
Was just about to comment this exact thing. We need a director’s cut of this movie, judging from the soundtrack songs.
Well let’s be fair the putting that dark song into a very shallow and safe movie would not make sense you can’t have that song where we literally says “who cares if some things are dying?” and than the very next scene is him staring in shock at what he has done.
@@arturzinurov4781 honestly, if you had a movie that had the same tone as the song, it could be a really good movie
Love him or hate him, he spittin straight facts.
On the flip-side, Green Eggs and Ham diverged RADICALLY from the book, and was amazing.
Mainly because
A) there wasn’t a lot to go off in the pretty simple book, so they had to get creative
B) It was made by people who actually give a shit about making good content and love Dr. Suess, instead of people who just use the IP to make money
That show is bloody brilliant😌 Season 2 was insane (:
@@DeanRocks-kr7wv C) they still kept the message in the books important to the plot.
Because despite the divergence the overall message of trying new things is preserved

Logic question: If the Onceler had the last seed for so many years, why didn't he just plant it himself?
Cause Illumination needed the story to happen.
Maybe he just doesn't trust himself with it... Plus he is old at the end and maybe he just found it recently, trees take a while to grow so maybe he was afraid he won't be able to take proper care of it.
i agree

Crap, good question
he probably felt like he didnt deserve to because he was the one to destroy the trees, he had too much guilt

I just want to point out - when this review came out, the idea of selling literal air was a joke.
That's ACTUALLY happening now. People from - I forget which country, but it's one of the REALLY polluted ones - are coming to my hometown and bottling air for the purpose of selling it. That's a real thing now.

There’s a deleted song called “biggering” written by the 88 (don’t you forget about me, community theme). It’s a great song,
And if they reduced the family to just side characters, with no real importance, and kept Biggering, maybe after “How bad can I be” you would’ve had a decent film, at least with the once ler scenes
Thanks for introducing me to that song. Now I'm saddened by how it was axed.

I needed all this stuff,
I had a little cottage,
And that cottage was enough
A place where I could sit and knit,
A place where I could sell my Thneeds,
But now I've had a little time
To re-assess my needs
And I need a bigger office,
I need a bigger chair.
A bigger desk, a bigger staff,
A bigger hat to wear
Because I'm biggering,
I'm figuring I'm biggering,
And biggering is triggering
More biggering
Nostalgia Critic: Hey, listen up, meathead.
I'm going to say this once, and I'm not gonna repeat it.
Greed... ya see, it's like a little pet, alright?
And the more and more and more that you go and feed it,
The more hungry it'll get!
But... you know, you really can't blame greed
No, that's stupid.
You see, it's gotta worm inside.
Oh yeah, that's right.
It's one that always needs to feed,
And it is never satisfied.
You get it?
But the more you try to find it,
The more it likes to hide.
Now listen--that is NASTY little worm.
And I like to call it "pride."
See, now that's why you're biggering!
Listen here, idiot!
I'm figuring on biggering!
But that biggering's just triggering more biggering!
Got that? Alright!
Illumination: There is a principle of nature,
That most every creature knows,
It's called survival of the fittest,
And this is how it goes
The animal that wins has got to
Claw and kick and punch.
The animal that doesn't
Winds up someone else's lunch
A company's an animal,
That's trying to survive,
It's struggling, and fighting,
Just to keep itself alive
I must keep biggering,
I'm figuring I'm biggering,
Though biggering is triggering more biggering.
I won't stop!
Biggering,
I'm figuring I'm biggering,
And biggering is triggering more biggering
And the customers are buying,
And the money multiplying
And the PR people lying
And the lawyers are denying,
Who cares if some things are dying?
I don't wanna hear your crying!
This is all so gratifying...
You just posted the entire lyrics to biggering, and it fits illumination to a T!

Idk, imo faceless Once-ler feels more like some ambiguous representation of corporations, capitalism etc. Meanwhile here they make him human, likable and then make him do all those horrible things
I agree that Once-ler's moral downfall could have been executed better rather than just one song or show how it was his decision etc, but I think that giving him face and more character pre-thneed-fever was a good idea

15:56 To be fair, Anakin Skywalker's transition to Darth Vader *WAS* more complex than most people realise.
Debatably.
I disagree; I take the "Confused Matthew" perspective on Anakin Skywalker in the Prequels, namely that he was a self-important and violent person from Day 1 and the error was inducting him into the Jedi Order in the first place. He should have started as a Sith. The character of Anakin that Obi-Wan discusses with Luke in Episodes IV-VI has never been seen on film, except perhaps in the Clone Wars series.
True as this film was one big failed change at a good Dr seuss film.
Tbh you have to have a high IQ to understand star wars
It was t complex, it was very simple and selfish. Anakin was willing to throw away everything he had been taught as a Jedi, all so he could maybe save his wife from dying in child birth. Seems really simple to me.

Turns out there was a song for The Once-ler that was much better at showing his evil side. It was called Biggering, and was the original How Bad Can I Be. It was much more slow, and had the Once-ler admit he never needed to be big, he just needed a cottage and he’d be fine, but he wants bigger thing. It also has a Lorax solo moment where he explains greed and pride. The reason it wasn’t shown in the movie was because children would be to scared by it...
Oh who are they kidding, it hit too close to home.
Biggering goes so hard
I reckon they should've gone with they're original story and songs. The Once-Ler knows what he is doing is wrong and the main boy character actually wants a tree for himself because it is something he can't have. The songs actually enhance the story too.

After seeing Joshscorcher’s recent Top 10 Non-Disney Villain Songs, I found out that there was going to be a song that had the Once-Ler in a more tragic light, talking about what he’s doing is wrong yet still does it anyway. It was in the style of a rock opera which definitely would’ve kind of improved this movie’s message while being in the same spirit and ambiguity of the original cartoon and book. Unfortunately, this is Illumination we’re talking about, which being known for being greedy and sugarcoating anything, removed it and replaced it with “How Bad Can I Be?”. Irony is such an understatement there. 🤦♀️ Strangely, the unused song is on the official soundtrack for some reason.

Every time Nostalgia Critic talks about the Dr. Seuss adaptions I feel the same can be said for Teen Titans Go!
Exepct that Teen Titans (the original series) wasnt good
Genji Yeah but no. The original was great with it's pretty unique way of looking at things, morals, plot, characters development, long term storylines, great animation, humor, and wonderful characters. Teen titans go is a pathetic and idiotic attempt at a TV show, never mind attempting to reach the original.
Chay why did you get so upset over an opinion
An episode of Teen Titans Go recently parodied those exact complaints, and even tried to justify the new show's idea of humor when comparing it to the original. XD
Hiya Kitty same with the original I hate that to
7:00 this scene is more deep than the entire movie.
Yeah. I really love it!
Dr, Seuss is rolling in his grave so fast that he surpassed light speed.
How that could've made the movie more timeless:
1. Cut out O'Hare and the Corporate bad guy plot.
2. Keep "Let it Grow" and "How Bad can I Possibly Be", but cut out the rest of the pop songs, and instead substitute the blanks with the songs from the original 1970's film, like "For he's a Jolly good Onceler."
3. Make the story about Ted, the boy, living in this dystopian wasteland, polluted by smog. He sees theses old paintings and images of trees carved in ruins, and that's what sparks his interest. Audrey can be just be like, a classmate.
4. Cut out the Pop Culture Jokes.
5. Change the Onceler's personality, make him someone who wants to make money because he had a poor childhood, and thus wants more out of his life, and make a name for himself, but gets a little carried away with his Productivity.
And 6. Leave the Ending Ambiguous. Like in the book.
Ant Amaya That would actually work pretty well.
Chay Cortright Thank You.
I'd change one of the edits. In 2 replace How Bad I can Be with Biggering. It's a earlier version of How Bad I can Be but it actually gets the message put better and the choice is amazing.

@Mercédesz Vámosi I kinda agree with you on it. I still like the first cartoon and live action one more, but this one wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I actually laughed at their funny bits which is rare.
He already did.
He'll have a heart attack
Pinhead
Nivek- Same here. The new grinch doesn't even look terrifing. He looks bored and slightly angry at the very least. I do love Cumberbatch as an actor, but I felt like the writers could've done more with him or have another actor that would actually make the grinch actually terrifing. At least Carrey's grinch was actually terrifing and looked like the live action version of Seuss's Grinch short in the 60's.
Honestly I still watch the original and get chills at the end every time
I'd like to hear your thoughts on original plans for The Lorax that were scrapped due to corporate interference. The demo tracks from the soundtrack flesh out the characters a lot more for just the few extra minutes they give. For instance, Ted was originally supposed to be obsessed with getting a new product called a "whosit" and Thneedville was supposed to be much more obviously dystopian. I think it would be awesome to have a sort of mini-fanscription or even just a short editorial on what The Lorax COULD have been but sadly wasn't.
This review never gets old.

What time?
At 8:23, when the scene with the Once-ler transitions to his younger self, I thought of this idea that could’ve made this movie much more interesting:
What if, instead of the focus on the Once-ler at the window, the camera focuses on Ted, sitting there, looking up, and *THEN* you transition into the younger Once-ler, making it look like Ted filling in the Once-ler’s shoes (thus the audience as well) as he’s telling the story of what happened to the trees.
Then there’s another idea that came up when @ 12:23 the Once-ler mentions about the “breakdancing and Donkey Kongs:”
With the one idea above, this would make much more sense that there would be music played (and how the Once-ler dressed that way), because this story would’ve been all inside Ted’s mind as he listens to the story.
This would make sense because Ted could represent the young generation watching this story unfolding.
Yeah, it combines with the weird similarity that the Onceler has with Ted, so it's probable that Ted had projected the scenarios in the flashbacks, and even the Onceler's appearance is based on that kid
In the original story, I always believed the boy went to plant new trees.

ProbablyNotRo omg, someone in the CZcams comments section that respects another person's ooinions. Lolol
As much as it’s hokey, I love “How Bad Can I Be”
Same
i think the song should’ve been released as a demo, and biggering replace it
"This wasn't on your resume!"
I love that line. :)
"Wow, that is not the voice I expected to come out of that kid. You know, because a 12 year-old boy should always be voiced by a 26 year-old man, right?"
Lookin' at you Big Mouth, Gravity Falls and Ducktales 2017!
Not to mention South Park
Based on my experiance with cartoons and especially anime I actually thought the boy was a teenager and his crush was an adult, so like 14 for the boy and 30 for the crush. I thought it was kinda weird.
And don't forget chicken little!
Ducktales hired professional comedians. This movie got pop stars.
Dipper was convincingly voiced

20:45 One of the funnier lines in this episode.
It's crazy that Illumination had all the right pieces to make an honest, ground-breaking animated film, but they just couldn't follow through. It wasn't because they lacked the talent. It wasn't because they lacked the funds. It was because they lacked the desire. They sacrificed artistry just to make a safer product. Not a film. A product.
News! Illumination studio is going to animate grinch too!!!!
I never said it was a good news
큐베다이스키 Honestly I'm actually kind of looking forward to that. Their recent movies have gotten better. Not all that great, but they're not as awkward as this movie.
+Alma Martinez (Snail) Well true, their films have been getting better. I was kinda joking, so.
큐베다이스키 Yeah I know XD
+Alma Martinez (Snail) XD
I just figured out about the FRICKEN EMOJI MOVIE yesterday, and now today I now this! I'm starting to be concerned about animated films/cartoons in the future
The fact that air is now sold in China because of pollution is hilarious.
@Blank E
O'Hare was ahead of its time.
It's because it's China.
All they care about is progress. Everything else is fodder.
@Joseph Wood What the hell happened here?
And very sad...
While I agree with this incarnation not being the best, the change in the Onceler isn’t exactly too hard to believe, especially since he was designed to be a young hipster. He receives all the peer pressure from family, people sucking up to him, and success. Young people are especially susceptible to the opinions around them, and can be very willing to do whatever, as long as they continue to receive praise and success from it. They believe that what they’re doing isn’t wrong, and as long as their followers are happy, they think they’re going down the right direction, and reject criticism and advise as hate and jealousy.
nah
I love the fact that by being a critic you have aneurysms from any sign of weak movies, really lets you appreciate the good ones as they don’t nearly or just straight up end your life.
Nostalgia critic: why superhero movies are still being made?
Hollywood: WELL THE CHART SAYS
But then the most unpredictable thing happened: the various songs of The Lorax became memes and it DID become popular again. Ironically.
Frosty Mac ikr, the ending made it seem like it didnt become retro but it very much did
Wow , so much internet today.............
The internet scares me
Have y'all seen the fanart
Im completely SERIOUS
Dammit. You’re right. Those memes made this crap too popular
“So donkey Kong is part of the illumination canon? I don’t know how to feel about that.” 😅😅😅
I can’t believe the answer is now yes
Well that Donkey Kong line in this movie means a lot more than you think. You see, little did we know at the time, the Onceler’s line about playing the Donkey Kongs was a small in movie hint of Illumination’s next big future project. Which would later be revealed to be the Super Mario Bros. Movie. That would feature Donkey Kong as one of the main characters. And before long, 11 years later in 2023 last year, we would get just that with the release of Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. With Seth Rogan as the voice of Donkey Kong.
@@sammontanez6908 i never thought about it like that
Is it just me, or had this movie got insanely popular on CZcams lately.
The Lorax was also popular on CZcams back in like 2015-2017, it got popular again due to the Lorax leaving meme
@@TheRealLegoDocOck Yeah, now we have 5 year old who are "in love" with the onceler
@@sebastiansfunhouse1559that was always a thing
"Well, I'd probably marry him on the spot. I bet that sounds crazy. Is that crazy?"
Cue the perfectly timed buffering, creating the awkward silence that would occur irl if someone said that to me.
"What are you doing this evening?"
"NOT YOU! DUMP HER!"
“You know, you ARE a bit of a hipster.”
“Shut up!”
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE MUSIC AT 10:40!?!?!?!
Doug’s rant at the end is great
NC laughing near the end about how all Dr Seuss movies are not like Dr Seuss got me in tears too, *more true words never been spoken*
This film would of been very good if they didn’t have:
- “Fellow kids” lines
- Stupid songs
- Bad voice actors
You wise man.
Yea and it already exists, the original story.
and the stupid romantic subplot
also:
- Hip topics the kids are into these days
- Disregard for original message
- Black and white morals
- Basically everything that wasn't in the original
But you just described 99% of the film.
4:45 she's not worth it Ted she'll dump you for song lyrics
I just responded that to another guy lol
Ohhhh that's cold
😂😂🤣🤣
Bart Villager OOH!
Funny this is he did ted bundy so.. lol
It's fun that "Oncelings" are pretty much Tumblr addicts
16:30 yeah, I know Im probably repeating a lot of comments, but originally they had a cut song called "Biggering" which would have acted as the once-lers turn to evil, first off it was much slower than "how bad can I be" so the shift to bad guy felt more natural additionally it was a lot more threatening/villainous so it made the actions seem more wrong and would have acted as another pro-tree song (not directly saying save trees but would have conveyed this is the wrong actions)
And it’s actually a banger
@@somerandomgamer9065I actually think How Bad Can I Be is a banger but Biggering is better
@@awesomeplushproductions I agree
You know what doesn't make sense? If thneed grows on trees, why are you cutting the trees down? It's like cutting down apple trees or orange trees. Literally no one actually does that.
Sklaverey True, Dr.Seuss could have said the actual Wood was useful for making Theneeds.
Kevin Gou I think the idea is that harvesting it without cutting down the trees is too inefficient.
@Chay Cortright So why not like, chop down 1-3 trees, make a ladder then use that? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense either way, but yeah, they did say harvesting it without cutting it down was a pain.
Sklaverey you are arguing with idiots that thought a 12 year old should be voiced by a 26 year old man, are you really gonna question that?
In the movie, they picked the leaves but once they needed it to speed up processing they started chopping.
That start of the video...

That final prediction, that in 2 years nobody would give a shit about the Lorax, aged like fine wine. What a great video.
Anyone else read the description: “How can you dumb-down a story intended for 3 year olds?”
I did
By making it for North Korean -666 year olds.
Remember this movie it was highly popular at its time but only a few years later I barely remember it at all until I came across this video
i never even saw the movie and i am glad i didn't

The movie focused too much on the past
I almost saw this movie, but I didn't, and after watching this video, I'm glad I didn't.

Those scenes in "Lorax land" were devastating. They really showed an actually good message.

11:07 Okay, *THE FREAKING BANANA SONG FROM DESPICABLE ME 2* I can tolerate, but mixing that with the fishes’ song is just a very 🎶 ba-a-a-ad 🎶 idea.
Dr seuss:
Grow a tree to save humanity.
Illumination studio:
Grow a tree to get laid
To be fair, getting laid can result in pregnancy, which does continue humanity.
Note: this is sarcasm. I respect your opinion, but my joke was still true. Lol.
