      @jnicholson79jn Před 4 lety +18

      @@aldairrocha3374 Doing babyface play-by-play and cutting a live in-ring heel promo are 2 different worlds. During play-by-play, they have papers in front of them with rundowns, historical notes, bullet points, etc. Not to mention someone talking to them through their earpiece telling them when & how to make certain points. It's equally challenging, but in a totally different way. Generally, whenever babyface announcers have made a heel turn and tried to cut heel promos, it has been a disaster. They sound overly scripted, the crowd doesnt buy their new attitude, and the whole angle flops before it ever has a prayer of getting over. Seeing Schiavone like this makes me wonder why he was never used in this capacity before. The guy started doing interviews for Crockett in '83, commentary in '85. Aside from the year he spent in the WWF, he worked consistently for the same promotion through all of its evolutions (JCP/NWA/WCW) for almost 20 years. Seems like his true talent was severely overlooked by everybody.

    Tony Shiavone under the tutelage of Gordon Solie is the reason Mid Atlantic Promotions/Crockett promotions was bought by Ted Turner. He saw the Saturday gingham ratings, and knew it was a gold mine! Him calling it Tenay was straight up. It wasn't a heel turn, it was straight shoot! And perfect!

    OMG! I've always considered Tony to be one of the most underrated announcers in the history of the business. If you're my age (38) & you grew up watching the "Monday Night Wars" like myself and so many others, along with Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler and Bobby Heenan, Tony Shivonne was in many aspects the "soundtrack" to our childhood. I don't recall (to steal a quote from Eric Bishoff) ever hearing/seeing Tony cut a promo, he was the play by play guy, not a character. Is this 10 min clip is any indication then I would have to say that Tony not ever having an on-air character was one more mistake to add to the thousands of missed opportunities & mistakes that lead to the downfall of WCW. This promo is money!

      *****
      Not disputing his skill as a play by play man during the 90s, because he was indeed very good. My issue with him is that basically he was a douchebag. Schiavone played dirty, and seemed to enjoy doing so. Yes it was Bischoff who had the idea of giving away Raw results, but Schiavone took it a step further, insulting and making fun of guys who didn't deserve it. He was very disrespectful in not allowing Bobby Heenan time to say a few words to acknowledge the passing of Gorilla Monsoon, a legend in the business, simply because Monsoon was associated with the competition. Classless moves. He was also the man behind putting the world title on David Arquette; It was his idea. His antics didn't go unnoticed either. It was no surprise that after WCW was bought, Schiavone was out of a job, and off to the middle of nowhere calling little league games. It's just my opinion.
      On an unrelated note, I worked as a personal trainer for several years while in university, and I really like your "Get a Grip" name. Clever

    When I saw this on Spike TV, I was stunned. I never imagined that there would be this much animosity between Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay. I now realize that this was a work, as TNA was trying to sign him on to the promotion. Tony Schiavone simply did not have the desire to do work in professional wrestling at that time. It would have been rough for him to do so, as he was an employee for 750 WSB Atlanta, Georgia, and the TNA TV tapings at that time took place in Nashville, Tennessee (they would later move their TV tapings to Orlando, Florida). It was simply too far for him to travel there on a weekly basis.
    The only reason that Tony Schiavone is working in the pro wrestling industry today, is because his contract was not renewed at 750 WSB.
