- Phone apps make everyone’s lives easier, but for members of the blind community, a new seeing AI app transforms how they live and work every day. Anirudh Koul believes that any disability is merely a gap between what we want to do and what we can do, and it’s technology’s role to fill those gaps. Koul points out that we all experience gaps as we age, and his invention gives all hope for a more empowered future. Growing up in India, Anirudh Kuhl was programming computers at a young age and by high school he was captivated by patterns in data-a key component of artificial intelligence. He moved to the United States to study at Carnegie Mellon and after stints at Yahoo and Microsoft, is now an AI researcher with multiple patents. Driven by his desire to help a dear family member, he took on a hackathon challenge at Microsoft and led development of an app that is now helping hundreds of millions of people with disabilities. It literally puts the gift of sight in their hands. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Hello, I am a disabled, visually impaired person and used to be fully blind. It excites me and over fills me with joy to know that people care about us. When I was blind during high school, I got bullied so hard for being blind. People thought I was faking. But BEING BLIND ISN'T THAT BAD! You see people for who they are and not what they look like. You are forced to ALWAYS find another way to do things. "There's always another way" is such a true saying. But oh my goodness, I love this video. Thank God for technology. Thank you, sir for attempting to make our lives a little easier.
Roxxie Dymond check up Tech Era in Ghana and what they are doing to help the blind. You’d absolutely love them
@@princekojonyarkomensah2101 I will be sure to check that out, thank you very much for this information!
It would be nice if CZcams could provide text to speech feature directly or via shared apps such as voice aloud for not so blind people.
@@AL-bo5vq I totally agree! Honestly, it's so hard for me to read stuff sometimes. And I think it should be available for all people, it would be a nice tool :)
I love how technology is helping people with handicaps.
As a blind person I have to admit that this app is really amazing.
would be great if they released an Android version so.
Same here!!! I am visually impaired and used to be fully blind and I'm glad I found someone in the comments who understands.
I switched from being an android user to an iPhone user Soley because of this app. Really hope they are working on something for android users in the near future.
Proud of being connected with you. This is one thing which is there for the world to make an impact. Way to go bro.
To everyone who is asking, the name of the app is 'Seeing AI' by microsoft
Peace, love, unity, and respect from Indonesia 👌
Do you listen to Greta Van Fleet by any chance? Lol
This technology is amazing... God bless you all and keep up the good work.
Thank you 😭 this is so awesome. My wife is visually impaired. I can't wait for this to keep evolving. Every year there are new tools. So exciting.
I wish my father had lived long enough to be able to use this, because he was so tech forward that he would have been one of the first to jump on this technology to "see". Thank you for making this available to others - easy & free. I'm going to need this myself soon enough, I suppose.
7:06 LMAO! 😊❤️
Love the concept. What an idea :)
Thank you for keep inspiring us.
I use this app so much, it helps so much.
Thank you for creating something that can help me in my day to day task all in one app.
I used to use different apps for different tasks, not anymore.
Roxie Dymond comment appropriate. It’s easy to agree with what I see as the truth. I will always agree with people who strive to make the world we live in more accommodating for all. So I suppose that must say that, that includes you. By responding to myself and others like me, you reinforce the notion that not good deeds end with punishment. Thank you kindly for your response and I can’t help but wish you the best as move though life bravely. Know this also: you are more capable than most that have full use of all of their senses. I wish you the best
Great hope for futures of disabled to become abled!
That’s just amazing and utter resourceful!
Thank you for responding. I enjoy knowing that I may have been able to do something that makes another person’s life more enjoyable than it was when they woke up that morning. But my reward is the happiness that I get when I can relate to good, intelligent and interesting people. If people can relate to my comments they have high degree of social intelligence. Thanks again
Wonderful!
Seeing a kasmiri pandit!
Excellent brother
thanks yuo for the hope you gave us
Awesome! Perfect way of demonstrating the need of those that have to negotiate the same obstacles as those with all their senses but don’t have all of their. Also, though addressing a serious subject, his appropriate use of humour, made listening to his presentation both captivating and pleasantly amusing. Thank you
Yes indeed! I am 19 and have been blind/visually impaired since I was 16 and I still need someone to hold my hand while crossing the street because I can't see and am still too scared to do it myself.
Addendum to my previous comment. Anirudh Koul’s delivery was truly deserving of a standing ovation.
@@bonkahermitakaintjudge9228 agreed!
Appreciate the kind words! All credits to my amazing team! Quick question, how did you discover this video, like through some TED email or website? Trying to track it down. Thanks!
Love it
I’ve been thinking of using AI to help the blind see too. Trying to create a device that helps the blind see by creating images from surroundings in their mind
As a person who has been fully blind at age 16 and didn't regain most of it till age 17 and is still visually impaired now at age 19, I would absolutely love this!!!
Roxxie Dymond Oh I meet you here too. Commented on one of your replies not long ago. Sure. I hope God helps me in this journey. With God, all things are possible yeah. Btw, you have a great voice. Subscribed and put on post notifications on your channel x. I’ll hit you up on Instagram or Facebook if you’re okay with that
@@princekojonyarkomensah2101 wow, that's amazing! Sometimes I don't get on CZcams to read comments or things like that because my eyes hurt while doing so, but today has been a good day with my eyes :) I know the Lord will help you!! God is so faithful and so magnificent!
And thank you so very much, I appreciate that gesture dearly. I would not mind at all! :) I am taking a social media detox/fast atm but I will be back on in February 😁 I look forward to chatting in the future! Thanks so so much. 💖
This is amazing 👍 The potential of AI is now incredible. More to come I am sure
Awesome work...keep it up
Good job..
😎👍💕Thank you. This restores my faith in humanity and gives me great admiration and joy in the extraordinary positive application of technology to advance the abilities and enjoyment of all mankind and not exclusive only to those with the financial means to buy such technology.
I am quite excited about this app kindly let me know which app should I install as I searched there are lots of links available at Play Store? Regards- Kapil
Thanks a lot for this great contribution in our life I am also visually challenged regards- Kapil
It's just wow
Revolutionary Product
wow this is amazing! my dream is to create something that helps disabled people too
but i don’t know what skills you need to build something like that, i’m new to programming, i was thinking about learning python and then learning to build neural networks in python, would that be enough to start, to be part of the building process?
Nice
May God bless you!!!!🙏
Thank you Alex! The credit goes to my amazing team. Curious, how did you discover the video.
Anirudh Koul Welcome! Maybe fate...lol, not sure. I watch TED talks often so I am subscribed. Very good information!!! 294 million people blind worldwide. Your personal story and struggle helped change the course of evolution- people developing and evolving. Way to go. Be proud

@@anirudhkoul1659 Thanks man!
I know it would probably take a lot of work, but it would be ABSOLUTELY AMAZING if it could read music!!!
Through the Ted talk. May I now personally thank you for an outstanding job. I am honoured that you took the time to respond personally. Thank you for devoting your gift for the betterment of mankind. Thank you kindly
I am not blind but I want this app
Do you know the name of the app?
Make a Tricorder for realistic use already.
Well done
American govt & bad bosses also need this.
Isn’t this the dude from venom

Its to comment.... Yay
How is a blind person suppose to read the instructions???🤷♀️ Please explain this.
That sort of instructions would be read out trough the app.
Will be a great thing, but what happens to poor disabled people when their device is no longer supported and breaks down? Who pays for the new device? Also these ai apps are being used in weapons and robots!
I love TED talks, but there is a lot of hubris surrounding new tech which will only be free if the devices are free themselves, and which can be used to keep people down, as well as helping, which is proved when considering privacy and state spying concerns!
Tech will never replace being able to have contact with real people, and I know that as councils across the country scrap care plans and suggest what tech can help, without thinking of the regular human contact needed and the fact that carers lose their jobs.
Great tech; shame about many of the world's poor who won't be able to afford a smart phone.
