Using AI to transform the lives of the blind | Anirudh Koul | TEDxSeattle

  • Phone apps make everyone’s lives easier, but for members of the blind community, a new seeing AI app transforms how they live and work every day. Anirudh Koul believes that any disability is merely a gap between what we want to do and what we can do, and it’s technology’s role to fill those gaps. Koul points out that we all experience gaps as we age, and his invention gives all hope for a more empowered future. Growing up in India, Anirudh Kuhl was programming computers at a young age and by high school he was captivated by patterns in data-a key component of artificial intelligence. He moved to the United States to study at Carnegie Mellon and after stints at Yahoo and Microsoft, is now an AI researcher with multiple patents. Driven by his desire to help a dear family member, he took on a hackathon challenge at Microsoft and led development of an app that is now helping hundreds of millions of people with disabilities. It literally puts the gift of sight in their hands. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Hello, I am a disabled, visually impaired person and used to be fully blind. It excites me and over fills me with joy to know that people care about us. When I was blind during high school, I got bullied so hard for being blind. People thought I was faking. But BEING BLIND ISN'T THAT BAD! You see people for who they are and not what they look like. You are forced to ALWAYS find another way to do things. "There's always another way" is such a true saying. But oh my goodness, I love this video. Thank God for technology. Thank you, sir for attempting to make our lives a little easier.

Roxie Dymond comment appropriate. It’s easy to agree with what I see as the truth. I will always agree with people who strive to make the world we live in more accommodating for all. So I suppose that must say that, that includes you. By responding to myself and others like me, you reinforce the notion that not good deeds end with punishment. Thank you kindly for your response and I can’t help but wish you the best as move though life bravely. Know this also: you are more capable than most that have full use of all of their senses. Will be a great thing, but what happens to poor disabled people when their device is no longer supported and breaks down? Who pays for the new device? Also these ai apps are being used in weapons and robots!
I love TED talks, but there is a lot of hubris surrounding new tech which will only be free if the devices are free themselves, and which can be used to keep people down, as well as helping, which is proved when considering privacy and state spying concerns!
Tech will never replace being able to have contact with real people, and I know that as councils across the country scrap care plans and suggest what tech can help, without thinking of the regular human contact needed and the fact that carers lose their jobs.
Great tech; shame about many of the world's poor who won't be able to afford a smart phone.
