  • This trip I went around 10 miles off the beach Oak Island Nc fishing. I was expecting to catch mostly Spanish. I was surprised with a good King and a giant king mackerel. I was using a Blue Water Candy Dead Bait Rig and sardines

    What setups do you use for your king and Spanish fishing

    • @garybfishing1309
      @garybfishing1309  Před měsícem

      Blue water candy dead bait rigs with sardines or cigar minnows . Keep one behind the boat close enough to see. That’s so you can tell if it’s spinning or swimming. If it spins you won’t even get a bite. Also use a ball bearing swivel not a barrel swivel. Both kings and Spanish will hit this, but only big Spanish

    Great video- that was a hoss. We’re at our place at OIB next week- can’t wait to try some of these techniques. We’re pretty good at Spanish on Clark spoons but haven’t had much luck with kings. Thanks for sharing!

      No problem. Make sure you troll this rig slow enough where it’s not spinning. I was only trolling one rod because I was alone. If I’m trolling more rods I always keep one close enough to see how it’s“swimming “. Good luck

    How far do you let out the line in the beginning? And how deep does that lure go down .

    • @garybfishing1309
      @garybfishing1309  Před 4 měsíci

      Let one where you can see it… maybe 20 feet. That way you can tell if it looks like it’s swimming or spinning. If it’s spinning slow down. Let the other out to a 10 or 15 second count. These dead bait rigs don’t run deep. They may both be just under the surface.

    I live at Ocean Isle and I just got my bay boat ready for the water. Flounder Season is coming up and we get a whole 30 days this year! I'm not too keen on the taste of King Mackerel. But fried and baked flounder is delicious.

    • @garybfishing1309
      @garybfishing1309  Před 2 lety

      I think flounder fishing is my favorite. Fried,baked, grilled, blackened, etc., etc., etc. ( you’re right, just about any way you cook it, it’s great.) Congratulations on the boat and good luck. If you ever see me out on the water , say hello.

    Nice fish, I'd say you got close enough! I am out of Ocean Isle and just starting to King fish. I think I know approximately where you are based on that cargo ship but can you tell me were you trolling over structure and if not how did you know where to target for the kings? I've been trolling around the ARs out there with no luck so far.

    • @garybfishing1309
      @garybfishing1309  Před rokem

      I wasn’t over the structure. For some reason the kings that day were about a mile north of the structure.

    How far back do you normally run the baits back?

    • @garybfishing1309
      @garybfishing1309  Před 2 lety

      I always put one bait around 25 feet behind the boat. This is the most important one because, it needs to be close enough to see if it’s “ swimming” through the water or spinning. If it’s spinning then you need to slow down a little. Let the other rod out and count to 15 and stop. Let a third rod out to a 25 count. When it’s just me on the boat I’ll only put one out right behind the boat

    Awesome fishing! Very exciting! Are you using all mono?

    • @garybfishing1309
      @garybfishing1309  Před 2 lety +1

      Great question. Yes. In the past I used fluorocarbon but, I switched to mono and can see no difference in the bite. Even in clear water.

    What kind of rod holders are those.

    • @garybfishing1309
      @garybfishing1309  Před 2 lety

      Those are made by Cannon. The same company that makes downriggers. You don’t have to lean out of the boat to get the rod out. They’re pricey but I love them.

    How fast (knot) you trolling?

    • @garybfishing1309
      @garybfishing1309  Před rokem

      Trolling speed is 2.8- 3.0. As long as the bait is not spinning. I will always keep a bait close enough to see it. Maybe 20-25 feet so I can tell if it’s spinning. You won’t even get a bite if it’s spinning.
