Yes, that would be the ideal way! So it's aesthetically beautiful and sparks joy for the villagers (in their little villager hearts), but also cleverly designed to keep enemies at bay and make it difficult for them to attack. In all seriousness, I sometimes try and use houses defensively (I'm not very good at it), basically instead of walls. Or kind of like a maze to slow them down. As long as you can get out too (you can always build a gate). I'm not sure if that's actually worth doing or not - probably not for proper irl players.

This is amazing work. I'm an old player who just got into this game after almost 20 years. Printed out your guide and used your mod collection, everything is much better now! I feel so lucky to have found your channel, thanks!
one of the main reasons why this was my most difficult rts i got good at haha. you always need a specific amount of villagers for even a standard build and strategies. and know exactly when and where to put them. and losing a villager can already be a killer blow. not much time can be afforded to be lost here either. many rts games don't put a 'worker' that high up the list in terms of importancy so this game is definitely unique in that.
I think you should make it clear that you force villagers to bring back food at 4:20 otherwise you are stuck with no food to produce the next villager for several seconds
Buildings should be build with as few Villagers as possible to improve efficiency. Therefore, the Villager between 4:02 - 4:12 should not join in building the Mill, but start collecting from the berries instead.
This is true, and something that can be talked about later. This guide is for absolute beginners. Besides, the 2-3 food lost from having two villagers building the mill for a few seconds is no big deal anyway.
if the villager helps building the mill, the original builder gets to collect berries sooner, so how big of a difference in this particular szenario is it really?^^
Wow your Gameplay is really hectic and fast. I always saw AoE as a slow Game, not like Stacraft oder something like that. This is why i liked AoE more, but now i see: I am really bad in AoE.
I have always personally preferred the original AOE with the default speed (1.0) and population cap (50) and speed is a big part of the reason. AOE 2 has a default speed of 1.5 and most people play with a population cap of 200, so it involves way more micro and faster moves. The fact that you start with a scout in 2 also accelerates the game

It's possible to use 6 if there's no lag you just need to force drop more often. So 7 is more ideal in a lot of cases I would agree. It also depends how far your sheep are. If they are close then you can start gathering them faster so less idle time. Remember this is an absolute beginners intro, I don't want to go into huge detail about every civ and overload everyone with information - the idea is to build up steadily. Avoid playing as the chinese for now is my best advice at this stage.
Awesome. After watching endless build order tutorials, this is hands down the best one yet. Easy to follow, short and to the point. I'll be looking forward to the next videos in the series. Grear job Zero, you're the best.
"Keep sending villagers to gather sheep, until you have a total of six." 1:56 to 2:00 I know this means villagers, but to some it may seem like 6 sheep
I bought this game just to relax myself during weekends after hours of hard work. This is the first time I’m playing AoE 2, been playing other RTS games when I was a kid
This is a brilliant resource! I just want to correct one small error made in this video (and most other resources) that players shouldn't be making as their game improves. You should not be building two houses right away. Your third villager, the villager that will be building a house solo, should be used as a second scout until you find your sheep. Once you find your sheep, you can build the second house and continue with your build order as normal. This is important because you don't need the second house until you hit 11 population, while your sheep should be under the town centre by the time the first house finishes building, so you have the extra food necessary to go up early to perform/defend from a tower rush, build militia and men at arms, build extra scouts, or transition onto wood and gold sooner for archers. Hope this helps and keep up the great work! ^_^
You can place 2 houses anyway, and only send your villager to scout (instead of completing a house) if you haven't found your sheep right away. If you scout too quickly outwards with one of your villagers, you may end up spending too much time scouting with your villagers instead of gathering sheep. In the end it makes very little difference, either method is fine.
I've always been torn about this. On one hand, the extra house is not needed till the 10th villager, so it feels like I'm spending wood early and that one villager can scout, or chop, or something, then I build the house later. On the other, since your villagers aren't harvesting anything in the first 30 seconds, they can build instead. I've never had a solid answer to that quandary

Doing God's work here Zack, thank you for this. You might be covering this in your sheep video, but one thing I'd quickly mention is to keep your sheep grouped slightly away from your TC so your villagers don't finish with one and then kill more than one at a time afterwards. I'm new and it's something I learned from experience after a few games but isn't obvious immediately.
Great stuff. Another thing I was thinking is that going for Loom right after your 11th vill as they head to the boar could be a useful thing to do for new players. Only a slight deviation from your build and follows on the same way afterwards but could cover any boar-related mishaps for those new to luring.
Thanks a lot for this beautiful work! Really appreciated. I downloaded your fast castle interactive tutorial, and even if I managed to get an A, I still cannot avoid my villagers to stand idle or kill one sheep more while the first boar is coming :P
I start with 1 peasant building mill by berries, 1 herding sheep and 1 building 3 houses and then also loom research right away. By the time loom is done, 1 house is done so I can create more villagers (yes there was one available to start). Meanwhile scout is out looking around. Now house peasant on to wood near town centre and all of the 1st 10 villagers go on to food (6 on sheep so they are ready to move to boars). Now create some for wood. Yeah, but I play only against the AI, never online, I play Regicide, and I do a mountain of urban planning as I go, eventually naming some of the streets in my village/town/city based upon significant battles that occurred there. My king (in the Castle) even gets a bride eventually (a female villager who never collected resources). If I survive the first hour, whether on Standard or Medium difficulty there's no way I'll lose. Yeah, I'm weird :-) Interesting video. I never thought about how other players would react to what I'm doing. This gets a like from me. My initial build order is probably a mill, villagers, a lumber yard, housing, villagers, a stone quarry, villagers, the beginnings of inner curtain walls, villagers, market, church, monks, dock, barracks, etc.. Much later, the King/queen get a royal compound including at least one more castle, a town center of their own, a church for permanent storage of relics, and a university (the queen is a firm believer in continuing education), with a stable and barracks just outside the compound. Yeah, I'm weird. :-o

Play as Chinese or Aztecs you have to force drop every now and then to queue the next vil right away. You can get 7 on sheep as Chinese instead of 6, which makes it a bit easier. And I would recommend it.
So much happens by the time he has finished saying "First, queue villagers at the town centre". I just had to re-watch it about 5 times in slow-mo. It usually takes me about 5 minutes to mouse over all the stuff to figure out what it even is.
Thanks for this series man. I use to play this game when it was just AOK. Now...I get my asses kicked with the AI. Thank for your tips mate. Managed to get the AI this time.
Nice vid. Only difference I am making is that I send all 4 vills to berries and uses one of the vills under TC to lure the second boar, but I realize that this way give me more food faster compared to my way.
You are a really pleasant guy. Nice voice and great tips from one the Beste players :-) Thank you so much for helping others with every detail you know about the game! I was happy to sea you with my friends the rocketbeans ;-) I'm looging forward seeing your other vids! Stay as you are! ;-)
When you are Chinese in nomad map...go enemy hunting, much funnier than building a towncenter. 1) Go close to their vills which are building. 2) If they are not building it in the same side, send 2 vills to kill any isolated enemy vill. 3) Start building your towncenter leaving one gap between the two of them. 4) Close the gaps with wood wall so their vills can't escape. 5) Let the battle begin.
I am not sure if going with loom with Mayans is the best choice The house with two villagers take 19 seconds to create. Loom research takes 25. That means that you are losing 6 seconds that you could be using to create your 5th villager. Basically you can start making up your 5th village at 19 seconds on the game instead of 25. If you do so, that means that you will be getting your 5th villager at 0:44 when other civs get their 5th vill out at 0:50. Technically, doing loom first doesn't put you on disadvantage since you would be getting your 5th villager at 0:50, but you would loose the advantage of 0:44. Tho it's just a few seconds so I am not sure if that would actually have a big impact ingame.

So much happens by the time he has finished saying "First, queue villagers at the town centre". I just had to re-watch it about 5 times in slow-mo. It usually takes me about 5 minutes to mouse over all the stuff to figure out what it even is.
Fantastic Guide and great editing
Thanks for this series man.
I use to play this game when it was just AOK.
Now...I get my asses kicked with the AI.
Thank for your tips mate.
Managed to get the AI this time.
This will be so useful for new player and for noobs who wish to improve. Tatoh has similar videos, but not as edited and easily explained.
only my second of your videos and highly impressed. great content
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make this series, it's so well laid out and easy to understand. When will you be uploading more?
damn, didn't know this community was still thriving
I was happy to sea you with my friends the rocketbeans ;-)
I'm looging forward seeing your other vids!
5) Let the battle begin.
what he did in 1 minute i do in 30 minutes, by then i got destroyed and starting my migration to my ally's base
I am not sure if going with loom with Mayans is the best choice
The house with two villagers take 19 seconds to create.
Nice series. Appreciate!
Zeroempires, I thought you said many years ago you would not be posting anymore AoE2 conent? However, I am happy that you do.
Thank you, zeroempires!!
very usefull and clear, i like chineese so i'm happy that you talk about "specific case"
finally!! those will be soo good!
Great video! thanks for the help
When I watch people who are good at the game play i feel like your either on alot of caffeine or drugs....Gotta go fasster!
I like to see my sheep get fat and never kill them, just build farms like crazy and hope for the best :)
Heyyyy the remastered version is out!
Having sheep help with exploring the map.... how the fuck haven't I thought of this in 20 years?
Super well done Tutorial! Thanks :)
Don't you want to start your Chinese build with only one house because the TC supports 10 pop, and then use all the other vills to find sheep asap?
I find if I build two houses right away as Chinese I may have trouble getting wood for a mill in time because they start with -50 wood.
I just start cutting down wood, build a mill, build farms and then upgrade to feudal age. Exploration happens naturally
Best Game in History ♥️
Love the series helped a lot
for any fellow noobs to the game, it's f11 to enable the timer.
I would have gone for that deer with the lumbercamp builder
Hey ZeroEmpires, great video and very helpful! But please tell me what mods you are using (''!'' above idle villagers - or is it just video editing?).
This is great, but it's been over a year and we still don't have any more tutorials... :/
Lol 9 minutes ago thought I was the only one still watching this vid
lol
Thanks dude, most helpful
