when your dog starts nipping, make a shhh noise and have him look at you, when he stops praise him and say good boy. also have a toy on hand for him to chew instead. remember, he's not being aggressive, he's playing and teething.

I have found more success by using sit and down to settle my puppy. And if she nips I stand up with a quick command and leave. It’s way more effective than tugging on the neck.

I have to say this method is AWESOME!! I just got 2 puppies. And the pulling of the leash with the command of NO work right away. I did reward with treats though and both of my puppies learned on our first try (I’m sure it helps greatly if your dogs are naturally smart) i have a Goldendoodle and a Yorkie. I am sorry for all of you who are still struggling as the puppies bites hurt like hell. Specially big dogs.

I have a two year old rescue who nips A LOT. He does it out of excitement and fear, mainly. He's awful with strangers unless he's been caged and had a bit to get used to their presence in the house. As for excitement, I think I'll have to try the spray bottle and pet route first. I'm PRAYING it works. I'm so exhausted by his over excitement.

I have a 2 months old rottie. When i got him, he was unstoppable. Biting and nipping me all around. The thing is you need to teach him what is good and and what is bad. I got him on line by doing this : if your puppy bites your hand or ankle just push him gently and give him a loud NO and redirect him to a toy. I prefer a hard bone. Everytime your pup bites, you do this. NO and give him the toy. Eventually he will stop. You need patience for this stuff. But you will get your result :D

There is an older little dog at my work that is not very sociable and goes after the pant legs of whoever makes noise or moves quickly. I'm a janitor, so, I make quite a bit of noise when I move, and I also have a hand truck, which he doesn't like, either. Last night, when he went after me, I stopped him by gently tapping his side with my mop handle and yelling a short "HEY!" to get his attention. He stopped immediately, and I followed up by making standing firm while facing him with a slight lean and solid eye contact. I held his gaze for several moments, all while calming myself and thinking "I am in control. Biting is unacceptable behavior. We do not do that here." Guess what he did? He gave me distance- a sign of respect that dogs give to their leaders. Furthermore, he left me alone for the rest of my shift.

My dog grabs my clothes while I’m wearing them and plays tug with them. Her intention is to bite me but she grabs the clothes. It’s hard cause if I get closer to her to confront her she changes her grip and bites me and if just wait or try to distract her it’s like she has complete control over me. It’s scary and hard to correct but I’m working on it.

I have a Yorkie and WILL NOT STOP BITING AND NIPPING I need help and if your puppy or dog needs help to be potty trained at first normally your dog will pee or poop on your carpet basically just keep an eye on your dog and if you see him sniffing around your house that means he or she is looking for a place to pee or poop if the dog sniffs take the dog immediately to your front or back yard and wait until he goes every time the dog does that repeat it until your puppy goes to your door and when it pees or poops give it a treat every time and yes

Dogs should not be petted on the top of the head, most especially by children. It encourages biting and is annoying to the dog. Instead they should be stroked on the chest, under the chin, on the shoulder or back.

Damn near every dog I've had has love to be petted/massaged on the head. Teaching kids how to pet them so that the dog enjoys it is the problem
Teach them to be soft and gentle and a properly raised dog should have no issue. That, or it's your kids that are the problem lol

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT he explores by biting. It will bite and chew everything. My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!!

What about dogs who herd? My dog is an English Shepherd and she nipps my heels. She is e-collar trained. She mostly does it when we wake up in the morning- from when I get out of bed until she finishes breakfast. She also does it if I am wearing flip flops. She's 6 years old.

I'm the owner of a border collie so I feel your pain (or remember it from years ago)! Just a couple ideas... teach "Down / Stay / Release". Then you can have her lay down while you get around in the morning and release her when you're ready to take her outside to run and release her pent up working energy! BUT... the best thing would be this... before going to bed, fill up a "Kong Wobbler", "Tricky Treat Ball" or "Omega Paw Ball" with her breakfast and hide it somewhere like a drawer beside your bed before going to sleep. When you wake up, take it out of hiding and give it to her to chase around while her food randomly falls out. She'll be distracted, mentally stimulated and eating at the same time you are able to walk around your home without being herded. Good luck!

Thank you so much for this video. I just rescued a malamute who play bites very hard. Not only my hands but my bites all over my body, face included. I can't lay down in my bed. It's clear it's 100% playful so I have no concern with him being aggressive but something needs to be done. I had a pure bred Siberian previously who didn't have this issue because I could stop it from months old of age. With Theo it's far gone and I'm not sure how to calmly teach him. No idea of his age but seems around 1 yr and high possibility there's husky in him. His mouth is the size of my face, it HURTS lol. Thanks in advance for any advice/insight -- !

I have a 11 week Siberian Husky and saying no doesn’t work, I train with treats and it’s going great for me. I always tell my self animals don’t know English LOL you have to show them the right way and then they will start to get it, never train with pain.

The comments about use of a prong collar are mostly from ignorant people (I did not say stupid). The people do not understand that a prong collar is to help a dog. Professional trainers in the military, police, rehabilitation, protection areas as well as open-minded regular trainers know why. The prong collar is NOT to Hurt. It is NOT to Punish. It is to interrupt unwanted behavior that leads to injury or danger to the dog (chewing electrical cords, etc.) or people or other animals.

    I need advice desperately! Please!
We have a German Shepard puppy who is about a year in a half now. We've had LOTS of Shepards and raise puppies, however our dog died. My little brother, who was devastated, spent his own money to buy his own dog, which is this dog. The only issue is she was past the most trainable stage. She will NOT listen, she has endless energy and is in general the most uncontrollable dog I've EVER seen!
I have no idea what to do, we are so scared of what she will do she has a muzzle whenever she is outside because we've already had bad experiences. One more and she will be put down for sure. We have a hard time walking her because she will try to pull you off your feet if she is interested in something. And is smart enough to get out of harnesses. Which is how some of the "bad experiences" happened. So we have to be careful for her not to get out and run off when we are trying to walk her. We can't even run with her to help get more energy out because she will literally pull you off your feet.
She barks at everything! She is also very territorial when it comes to other dogs and has tried to go after several dogs, which is why we keep her in a muzzle. Even when she is just trying to play she will jump up on people and scare them because of her size, the ONLY one she will even remotely listen too is my dad or my brother who she will constantly follow around. I've tried to train her for up to 2-ish hours a day and no luck. She just keeps getting distracted and won't listen. The longest I've gotten her to listen was to stay for 10 seconds but that was immediately broken the second she saw the treats in my hand.
She also has a weird habit where she will pounce on the floor, blankets, pillows, corners, etc. When there is absolutely nothing there. She will just stare at whatever it is intensely waging her tail like she's waiting for something to pop out of no where.
Can someone PLEASE give me some advice! I don't know what to do I've never had a dog this uncontrollable and high energy before! And the last thing I want is my brother to lose her. If you need more info I'd be happy to give more details or examples...

Go to the CZcams videos by Solid K9 training. This pup you are talking about is past the puppy training stage. The habits that have have been formed while a youngster have now developed into "behavioral" problems. There are other decent trainers on CZcams, but I like Solid K9 Training. (And I have watched and viewed hundreds of song training videos) hope that will help!

Abuzar laleka it means your dog is the pack leader. the dog corrected your behavior and continued to do as it pleased. that is a very bad sign. if you let that continue your dog and you will hate eachother, and the dog may hurt you or someone else.

I wouldn’t recommend this method because: You need to teach the dog a protocol (what am I required to do in the situation) prior to introducing the dog to the situation (reinforcement of sit for treats when people approach and/or pet). The puppy received no guidance in this scenario other than a correction for certain motions. If your dog nips and you’re introducing kids, four kids converging on a him and correcting for these infractions is unfair and may associate the kids with “bad things” (since the corrections are most likely going to happen when the kids are present). It would be far better to have one child initially, coached on appropriate interaction with the puppy so it’s a slow positive interaction that builds skills rather than setting him up to be corrected.

I'm having the same issue. So stressed & discouraged.
My 2 year old son loves our 3 month old puppy but the pup keeps nipping at him and when he gets scarred & cries, he does it even more. :(
He does the same with me. He hardly licks & when you pet him, he goes straight to nipping, as if he doesn't like being petted or thinks of it as a game to start nipping.
Puppy is 3 months old corgi & we've had him for 2 days now.

      Regearding the nipping:
It’s gotten A LOT better (has almost disappeared tbh). What’s helped a lot in regards to stopping nipping to my son is the clicker training. Click and give a treat every time he even looks in his direction so that it stops his herding impulse to run and nip at him. Now he hardly does it ever (wish he did it more tbh 😂).
What’s also helped, is that my son is older now and can okay with him whereas before, he was either too scared, too jealous, or would (& still does tbh) smack him when he means to pet him. But now that he’s gotten older, he is much more gentler than before. Which is why I usually let my son and wife (cause he’s so clingy to me) give him treats so will get, & has gotten, closer to them both.
Regarding the licking: I’ve learned, not every dog is a kicker. So my dog at first, NEVER licked but no licks here n there but very VERY briefly. Like if I’m on the floor or he really wants attention and wants to be petted a lot (which is often lol)
My notes are a little all over the place but be encouraged. It gets easier (though it’s not easy at first lol). My biggest suggestions would be this:
Get a trainer (though be skeptical of the Pack Leader/intimidation style trainers)
Walk your dog together as a family. (This will also let the dog get his/her energy out and not be as nippy)
Just know that as your puppy/dog gets older, so does your kid & it will get easier to get them to listen to the does & do nots.
      Hope this has helped.

That is why there has to be a physical correction (the quick tug on the leash) with the verbal one. Then you follow with the verbal praise to reinforce the good behavior. This is really no different than training any other command. Eventually you can do away with the physical correction too.

I'm confused, it looks like you're offering the puppy your shoe to him to set him up to fail? Why do you push him in to a sit instead of cueing him to sit? And if you ask (or push him in to a sit) how does he know when he can get up or be done?
"Respectful with his mouth"? Isn't mouthing a natural phase in their development? How is mouthing a behavior that exhibits disrespect? Shouldn't it be considered an opportunity in their development to teach bite inhibition and how to use their jaws at varying degrees of pressure (to avoid future damage if they bite someone or something?). It seems by punishing in an effort to extinguish this natural puppy / adolescent behavior means the puppy will miss out on this very important lesson.

Doesn't jump on me anymore. He's been vetted- he's all good. Anxious, but she wanted to try increasing his walks& burn some energy. He's a sweet, over-active want to be lap-pup pup. I'd had a hard time walking him. He finally grew into his harness so now I can walk him without worrying about him hurting himself pulling the collar around his neck. Yep. He's leash reactive too....oh- yay! He's a new man lol! Does both of us a world of good. He even made a friend. Hard to socialize them whilst quarantined ya know?
