Do Straw Blankets Work?? // Summer Seeding Update

- You can grow grass in the summer, although it's not at all the best time to do it for cool season grasses. Some keys to being successful:
1. Proper dirt prep is key. You need good seed to soil contact and you need something for the seed to root down into.
2. Covering your seed to prevent it from washing out (as seen in the video) would have been HUGE in helping keep my seed and dirt in place.
3. Keep the seed and grass sprouts moist. Especially in the summer time when it's hot and dry, you don't want your seed or new grass to dry out, causing it to die in the summer heat.

I sometimes walk around our neighborhood and think “wow, this house has great drainage, good for them” lol love the trials and tribulations content.
Haha it’s funny the things you notice the older we get 😜
@@TheLawnWhispererin that case, I’ve noticed a lot at 53&1/2😂
When you talked about imagining what it’s going to look like in 3 years…that’s what it’s all about. Having a vision and enjoying the ride along the way. Too many people want it right…right now. Doesn’t work that way. Look forward to seeing it progress. I’m in the second season on mine and still have 2 or 3 more to be where i want. That just means more fun. Keep up the good work dude!
For sure! Gotta look long term and I don’t think I’ll be anywhere near where I want to be for another 3-5 years
Your lovely assistant did a great job! So cute!! Look forward to seeing how your yard progresses.
I appreciate the transparency of the ups and downs you go through. It makes this whole process seem relatable. I also feel more invested in the journey as a viewer because of the transparency.
For future videos, I'd love to see the process of bringing in compost and spreading it after aeration. This is something I need to start doing to amend my rocky clay soil.
Yea I’ll be showing that. Trying to finalize the delivery of the material so I can plan out when to be ready for that. I think I might be going with a 50/50 compost and sand mix this time so it’s better for leveling while I’ve got everything bare dirt
@@TheLawnWhisperercan the blankets be used for sod and sprigs?
I’m really happy to see you back on a regular basis.
Love the content! Can’t wait to see the finished job!
Good to see you back in business :) Good luck on your new journey! Im sure in the end it will look fantastic.
I hope you’re right!
Great work! Its all coming together my friend i would love to see the whole process on the putting green and cant wait for your next video !
Good video….will definitely help someone trying to grow grass…..love your little one helping with the camera shots….start them young learning about gardening and nature etc…..tks for posting 🥰👵🏻
Your kiddo is adorable, I have a 14 month old and is as helpful as yours it looks like. Best videos in the game 👏
Nothing better than getting the kids involved with the lawn and landscaping!
I'd definitely want to see the whole putting green journey if you do it
Will do my best!
It's gonna be amazing! And the compost is a great idea!
I think I’m gonna go 50/50 compost and sand mix!
@@TheLawnWhisperer that’s a good idea.
Yes! Please show the whole process of doing the putting green ⛳️
That was a great video. Loved it!
I feel your pain Justin. I am still going through this same thing. Very tempted to just kill everything and start over. Fighting the temptation.
Before you know it your lawn will look as good as your old one
I hope even better!
Great job- its off to a good start well ahead of the game now fall should be a cake walk
Happened to me with butting in pool and reseeding. Washed away in then severe thunderstorms..😢 love your soil helper. Start them young. 😂
I really think you're going to need drain tile eventually....just to get the water out of the back yard faster in down pours like you just had.......
You could use plastic sheeting to protect your seeding areas if you know you got a down pour on the way......
I have used huge rolls of plastic to germinate areas quicker, too....
Keep on with the straw, add some loose as you reuse the blankets.
We are all cheering you on!!
Yes we’ve talked about putting it along the rock wall and sloping the dirt from the patio to the rock wall.. we will see!!!
I'd DEFINITELY watch a Build Your Own Putting Green playlist
Seeding blankets ALL DAY! I used them on my Scotts Provista KBG backyard and I'll never seed without. Had plenty of washouts in previous renos but as you mentioned they do start to get pricey 💵 💵 💵
Yeah but it’s a toss up. Spend money up front on the blankets or spend time and money redoing the dirt and seed 🤪 I’ll go with saving the time of redoing and using the blankets!
Don't worry about other dips on youtube go for the green it will be fun to watch!!
Great video this time!
We have Johnson Grass growing in a flower bed we put in and filled with some top soil. Had no idea what it was or where it came from. But, that stuff grows quick!
Yea this video is about 2.5 weeks of growth
😊 here's a suggestion for you. Instead of a putting green that everybody is putting in, put in a putting green that is really a miniature golf putting green. It might be more fun. It definitely would be more unusual. And it's something that your kids would definitely love.
In the middle of a renovation (without straw blankets) and I watched this last night with my 6 year old daughter, on no fewer than six occurrences today she has informed me I’m doomed. Also if you get some washouts in seeded areas and don’t want to run equipment over to fill them just roll up sod and plug the ruts.
First Aussie 😁. Justin,a man on a mission . 🤠
Good day trev
Really like this series. I may be getting the chance to redo my 1970s lawn here in the near future, so this is all very helpful. Also.....when are we gonna get a chance to buy some hats? The one you got on is cool. Hope you start selling some more merchandise soon.
I’d suggest looking into renting an overseeder to get the seed down in the soil. I rented one when I renovated my lawn and it helped a lot with washout.
Yes for sure a good option too! I always do a makeshift version where I seed, then run over it with a dethatcher which does the same thing if getting the dirt down into the soil
Golfer here. Send that green buddy!!
🤙🏽
Been there. Heavy spring rains washed out half my front yard...
@2:12 Thats a horrible feeling. Happened to me once. Now I try to look at the forecast models and find less chance of rain stretch
Acclaim does a good job at suppressing Johnson grass rhizomes for what you leave behind when pulling.
I did notice in that heavy rain it was pooling off your front porch. You may want to look into your drainage there and check your gutters. That kind of pooling will cause foundation issues over time.
Did take care of that! Thanks! Crazy rains
I love golf.....show it all!
Will do my best!
Wow I guess that was a success😮😊😊
Ha anytime I learn something new it’s a success!
@@TheLawnWhisperer Absolutely true!
You should think of tree planting episode soon. Before it's time to plant.
I want to see you document the putting green process start to finish
I might just do it. But want everyone to know up front this is a diy average homeowner friendly putting green, not a usga spec putting green. It will have a sand base, be as smooth as I can get it and will be mowed super low, but it’s not like some others I’ve seen where I’m digging out deep , putting a deep layer of rock etc
Would love to see the putting green process. What’s your handicap? Seems like the clay base would be good for the bunker and the green. Would you raise the green with sand or topsoil? Looking forward to the next one.
I found that my grass grew the best when I didn't do anything to it for 2 years.. just weekly cuts.
Frequent mowing and proper watering are the two most important aspects to lawn care, but I don’t believe you would have better results not feeding your lawn vs proper nutrition for your lawn
Fiskars weed puller is awesome for clumping grasses…
look into a grandpas weeder for that johnson grass. I have one for the monster dandelions and it works well.
I have a weeder that is the same thing essentially but no chance I would pull all that stuff out. There were thousands!
For the Johnson grass, this might work. I put 1 ounce of Roundup concentrate in a bottle of foaming soap. I then pump the foam out while wearing gloves, and wipe it on the plants I want to die, being careful not to touch the good grass. It's not perfect, and sometimes good grass gets hurt too, but it's really working well on the weeds. This should be easy to do on those huge plants. I thought those were corn. :)
My plan was to paint the glyphosate on until I saw how many there are. I’d rather spray and kill everything than spend all that time painting it on. Good tip though!
I had a large row of large blackberry bushes on the other side of my fence, the runners kept coming up in my yard. I tried everything, but the root balls just got bigger until, I cut off a branch , drilled a hole in the middle of the live ßtem, then filled that hole with round up concentrate. That bush died roots and all, did it to the rest and have been bush free since.
Here’s an idea you can use next time get a roll of plastic and roll it out over the soil the day before it rains to prevent it washing away your Grass seed
The problem is most of these rains haven’t been in the forecast
Film the entire golf green dude. Who cares if everyone or anyone else is doing it. Everyone has there own take on how to do things. I'd like to see how you do the putting green. You have a lot of work to do on that property. I can't wait to see how it comes out in the long run.
Use a tackifier for your seed it worked for me on the hill in my backyard
I’m not sure anything would’ve helped with the amount of rain we’ve gotten
Pylex is good for young Johnson Grass seedlings.
I’ll keep that in mind next time! Thanks!
as you need to reseed it all again, and similar to what you mentioned about adding compost, is there any chance you could amend the soil with some sand as well - or add some inground drainage channels? get it free draining, to remove that excess water away!
50/50 compost and sand is most likely what I will use
Have you considered doing sod? Im curious what the cost would be compared to dealing with seed waste and the amount of time it takes to get it established.
I have an am possibly about to do at least some sod and go over all that in a video
Get you a weed wick for thst Johnson grass.
Wouldn’t MSMA work on the Johnson grass?
Holy ... Yeah that's a nice ad geez. The amount you need to spend in overseed, water and fertilizer on the non blanketed area ... And the mental aspect lol I would be depressed.
What blankets did you use bro? I’m gonna use them this year but I can’t find the Futerra ones anywhere.
Honestly they didn’t have a tag or anything on them. Got them at a local mulch yard but they’re the best I’ve ever seen. Very good quality for a reasonable price
I'm surprised you don't flag those things.
Meaning the heads?
Why did you or they wait so long for that Johnson grass to get so big before pulling them? They were huge!
Things happen 🤷🏻♂️ busy busy busy
Go IU. Class of 04
tenacity will kill johnson grass but you need multiple apps.
Will you be reel mowing any parts of your yard besides the putting green?
The area around it as well. But majority of the lawn with be mowed with a rotary
@@TheLawnWhisperer how long typically does established grass take to die after sprayed with glyphosate?
@@AndyBilder it may take a week to start showing signs of dying.. you’ll have to spray it again I’d say, about 2-3 weeks after initial spray
@@TheLawnWhisperer thanks! Just moved into a new place and doing a full renovation.
I thought you are supposed to leave the mats on until they disintegrate??
You’d be waiting like 50 years
That stinks about the Johnson grass. That stuff has already established itself. I'd just use roundup and start over at that point. It sucks but I feel like that Johnson grass isn't going away anytime soon.
I’m going to spray it 3 times over the next 6 weeks, then rework the dirt with the skid steer before moving on
@@TheLawnWhisperer Sure beats pulling random Johnsongrass for years to come 😎
@@bbtank3000 100% I want it gone!!!
16:15 that’s what she said 🤭
Always!
Sheeesh that’s unfortunate!
Ha very!
If you wait until fall to seed, won’t all that dirt be filled with weeds? How would you get rid of the weeds before seeding?
Spray them.
I am trying to establish a new lawn. I have a newly built home and have just had the grading process completed. I have put down my seed over the newly graded yard and added fertilizer over the top of it. This was done two weeks ago with a lot of watering. I do have some grass coming up but it is very thin and patchy. I am wondering what mistakes I made? this is very frustrating because there are spots where I see nothing but dirt and no grass at all. What can I do?? Please help!!
What seed did you put down and where are you located?
@@TheLawnWhisperer I am located in Buffalo, NY. It's half rye grass and half Kentucky Blluegrass
@@brandonwinder1570 if you’re keeping it watered the rye grass should be popping up.. I wouldn’t be surprised if the bluegrass hasn’t popped quite yet. Give it another 2 weeks and see.. you may have a to re scratch the soil surface and re seed this fall
Didnt fallow the new soil eh?
I watered it for 2 weeks, then rains came about every 2 days and just downpoured over and over
Have you thought about a natural look where you are putting your fruit trees? Native grasses.
I want it mowed so that we don’t have to wade through tall grass to get to them. Lots of snakes, ticks, etc out here. I’ll probably also fence them in to keep the deer out so I’d say I’ll eventually put rock or mulch around them all
Are those straw blankets reusable? Best place to get them?
They are as long as you can keep them dry after you roll them up or if you’re going to reuse them right away. Mine are nasty since they’ve been sitting here rolled up for a while now. I got mine locally. The ones at the big box stores are no good
@TheLawnWhisperer that's my issue I live in a pretty remote area northern maine.. and we don't have much options for local stores besides the big box stores or online shopping
@@nathanbeaulieu1534 I honestly don’t know what brand these are I used because there’s no tag. I’ll try to find out. They’re awesome
@TheLawnWhisperer I appreciate it! Thank you! On another note.. ive watched some of ur other videos and tips.. and my lawn is improving slowly but surely!
Bruh you make good videos film it
Are you in?
Michigan?

I would glyphosate that whole front and start all over in Late August.
That’s literally what I said I was doing!
@@TheLawnWhisperer Dude, I wasn't listening - shhhhheesh
@@rmb5858 haha all good. I actually sprayed it yesterday. Will do 2 more rounds before seeding
@@TheLawnWhisperer Looking forward to seeing the results. As you learned planting in the spring/summer is not easy plus with all the rain that you (and I got) no bueno
Dude, your Johnson(grass) is HUGE.
😂😂 my man! Unfortunately it’s not as big as it looks on camera… 😔
That’s what she said.
Each time I've seeded my lawn I make a mistake. Every mistake I make I learn from so each time I seed I get better and better at it. Next time you'll learn to use straw mats.
Yes! Learning is the key!
