Thank you, I needed Gomez adams singing Toreador march whilst a trio of tap dancing mimes do Beyoncé and Michel jackson at the same time behind him
Didn’t know he needed his own mini trio snapping constantly behind him-
where the faz bear?
Didn't know Bizet specified choreography by The Temptations. I'd like to know who was the person that said "That's good" and who was the other person that said "Yes!"
I agree with you, except it's a pale imitation of The Temptations. I like you wonder: So, NOBODY behind the scenes thought this was a bad idea?
¿What kind of Chicago is this?
lol I'm dying here hahahahah I agree....why dance................................. let him sing.... just let him sing... sigh...
Isn’t the toreador supposed to be cool and literally Mr. Steal-your-girl? The choreography and backup dancers make him look like a huge dork. Or like the presenter at a space-drag queen show.
Lmao that’s the point- we’re looking at a representation of his ego
Some visions should never come to fruition
i didn't expect to see Joey Tribiani dancing at the opera
I'm glad to also have seen more "traditional" productions of the opera classics instead of just this kind of new interpretations.
Admittedly, they were sometimes a bit overdone (I remember a "Carmen" in Prague in the eighties, with fiery Spanish women with wiggling hips, roses in their hair and everything), but at least they had a certain show value in terms of stage design and costumes.
This looks like a rehearsal on the grandstand of the school sports hall...
Different, yes, worthy of all these negative comments - no. I went to see this, and was apprehensive due to the reviews. Sure it was not traditional, but it was one of the best nights at the opera I have been to. Actually it was almost a ballet as well. The choreography whilst singing was simply amazing. Unfortunately, watching on screen dilutes the experience, but in the flesh it was amazing and spine tingling
“Could this be the work of an enemy stand?”

As an opera student and weaboo, I wasn't expecting to find a jojo reference here
@@TheLeedlers been waiting a year just for you 😩 some of older Japanese music had some opera / folk vibes if you want any recommendations!!
Mildly homoerotic opera is something I didn't know I needed in my life
Carmen in 3D that was done by the ROH about ten years ago was SO much better.

CHOREOGRAPHY- FANTASTIC.
1) it’s fantastically campy. Love to see innovation in opera!
2)I don’t understand Italian. I wouldn’t have been able to understand how ridiculous the toreador is supposed to seem if not for the bg dancer’s interpretations. Clearly states that “hey. This guy’s an asshole, but everyone acts like he’s hot”
3) the gal was flirting w the other gal- I’m jealous.
Only critique- the socks. They kinda look like ski socks on camera, but idk…
When this video started, it was alright, nothing to particularly write home about. The voices were alright but again nothing ground breaking. at 0:56 the music started losing me but it started to build, and build, and then the music hit a new high. but the solo was alright. after that, when it all came back together, it was honestly a master piece, but before I could finish the song, a weird fox mangled, almost chucky cheese looking thing bit my head and took my frontal lobe ;(. However, now that I have finished it, I would rate it a 10/20 as it could've been better but had some highs.

Lmao why is everyone so bitter about this production? Having seen countless operas with traditional sets and costumes it was great fun to see something that was just wacky. It’s not an ‘insult’ to Bizet, it’s an interpretation. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinions but this one production hasn’t single handedly ruined opera, y’all can relax.
I'm all for out of the box, innovative new productions. This is just tacky.
Agreed. For example, I really like the Peter Sellars version of Don Giovanni. I know purists would disagree, but resetting the milieu in a drug-lord ruled ghetto, while obviously unusual, creates a certain relevance - it reminds us that the Don is not simply a charming seducer but also a thug who is used to getting his way and doesn’t hesitate to use power, influence, money and even force when need be.
This retelling of Carmen doesn’t retell the story in a more contemporary setting - it is just about pulling our leg, and not in a nice way either.
Benoit Pellet I think you’ve cracked the case. This seems to be purely for the sake of surprise and “ wouldn’t it be weird if we did this to Carmen?” Rather than actually pushing the interpretation or medium to a new place.
OHH WAIT. ARE THE BG DANCERS REPRESENTING HOW HE THINKS OF HIMSELF???
ARE WE WATCHING THE TOREADOR’S WET DREAM RN???
I LOVE IT. MORE.
Edit- genius touch w the only three real ppl being at 4:14 , w/out face paint.
I haven’t watched the opera, but just from the staging alone, I can see that he’s pining after these two women, but… the third woman…
Ex lover? (Has the eye paint and lipstick, but no white face paint)
Point is- the fact that the larger context is being reflected in this scene is a testament to the team’s creative vision.
The third is carmen, and sorta has a relationship with him. Its a bit ambiguous at this point of the show.
While I found it funny the first minute, once I got used to the style, this ended up being great. Bravo.
At 1:16 lights = off, and I see the eyes and mouth from the door, guys did you know what is that was? Oh, I remembered something, when it happen, that not was just eyes and mouth, that was... bear?...
And on top of "all these", he delivers subpar vocal performace.
How to make opera that almost insults originals briliancy 101.
They are trying to recreate the effect that Carmen had on the first audiences back when it was brand new. Back when nobody liked it
@@thomasparkinson9404 well they might of over shot how bad to make it versus how likable it could be, I can only see this being good in a modern art museum in 2056
0:58 See? It’s Just A Normal Opera! Nothing Can Go Wrong!…….
_R I G H T ?_
This will be my alarm tone from now on.
Hmm, what a nice song
Dunno why everyone is so uptight about this production like they can personally attest to Bizet's thoughts a century and a half after his passing. He probably would have loved the fact anyone remembers it exists enough to do this. Dude died within a couple of months of the original showing and it didn't get popular for months after.
I'm so triggered by this version and I'm relieved I'm not the only one lmao
In my opinion, if this style of show brings more young people in, then thats great. At the end of the day, more people experiencing opera who wouldnt have otherwise can only be a good thing. Lowering the barrier of entry like this by adding something they might subjectively find more interesting to watch is fine. I am glad though that there are still lots of more traditional productions.
Give me a break. Who is the demographic that this abomination could possibly attract?
@@davidabraham434 Quite frankly, I love this production. Remember that at its heart, opera is about stories and characters, and as times and cultures change, they must be recontexualised for the current audience. And if that doesn’t please you, so be it, but it will be the survival of opera.
so ein geiiles proooduuuuukt einfach viel zu wyyyld danke mann genau danach hab ich mein ganzes leben lang gesucht
I was lucky enough to see this production of Carmen live at the Royal Opera. It is a really challenging production and it saw some people leaving at the interval.
I am still thinking about it months later and will do for quite a while. Opera should not be stuck in the past and, while classical interpretations are great, new visions will keep these relevant.
Freddys at nights five
Everyone is saying, "it's terrible" but I like the audacity of it. Haven't u ever just wished you could say F*#k It! and go batshit every once in a while? That's what this is.
I don't exactly this staging but I think the choreography in this number is amazing
I hate the three dancers. What are they meant to signify? Who are they meant to appeal to?
did not expect this comment section to be a warzone, but alright! personally, i'm a fan of this performance- his vocal performance accurately conveys the character, and i feel like the choreography of the three guys behind him also tells a lot without putting strain on the actor! sure, maybe we could've gone without that pure white makeup, but i absolutely don't mind this staging/design.

Godly heavens thy the great bite of 1887 where mr Fredrik the fuszy brear the II where the candles of the ballrooms of Frederick fazbear the great pepperoni pizza are made truly a great art
Toreador-reimagined with Grease+Single Ladies in mind.
The baritone voice is amazing!
But I'd prefer the classic version ever.
His voice is constricted in a way that makes his voice thick and swallowed sounding. His voice sounds fake and overly darkened due to the constrictions and inhibitions to vocal function. You can hear as he sings higher his voice becomes more laboured and a wobble occurs. I made a video on it. czcams.com/video/i2cJYz_yqgU/video.html
Welcome to the Internet where you can't just enjoy something without somebody random telling you are wrong for enjoying it.
@@cheekychappy1234 I never told anyone they are wrong for enjoying. He said wonderful. I said his voice is 'ingolata'. 'Swallowed'. Your the one bitching. You can like who you want. Ignorance is bliss. Why bother going to school or learning to read. Why bother improving your knowledge.
Uhhhh, what in the name and spirit of Opera did I just witness?
Ah HELLS NAH 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
They just stabbed Opera. ⚰️
This is ridiculous. Totally incongruous
I couldn’t believe my eyes. Is this comedy ? I can’t find the words contemptuous enough for that production. How could this ever be approved for the ROH. Carmen is one of the greatest operas ever to be mocked . Poor Kastos , an amazing baritone in those silly socks with those three goons singing in his ears . Can’t believe he even agreed to perform for this disposable spoof. I lost respect for him . Sure doesn’t add dignity to his legacy. Maybe It was just Saturday Nigjt Live !’
Toreadors and matadors usually wear pink or red socks as here though. :/
Wonderful interpretation of Carmen. It is great Opera, Opéra comique and Musical all together. Go and see, it is a great evening.
Well this took the "Royal" out of the Royal Opera House.
The music in 1887 really scared me because of the black out, Fredrick and their gang sung this during this.
Toreador, cuando hace calor, te empapas de sudor y tiene mal olor
While the staging is too dark, the choreography is amazing
@JohnDoe-kg6gy, excuse me? What gives you a right to be so rude about this performance? Personnaly i loved it but if you have an opinion ypu know will offend people please keep it to yourself.

Campy talent show. Like an old-school gay bar on Saturday night. Except the choreography, scenery and lighting would be much better in a gay bar.
We had to sing this in fourth grade and my teacher said I was the only one that was good. Bruh my voice cracked
Do French kids sing this just for fun? I would've sung this had I known it then!!
This is so bad that it becomes awfully good
Aside from the obviously ridiculous three stooges behind, they cut the instrumental part in 2:07. Such a shitty act.
It’s beautiful in every way. The older style choreography is a classic and great yes, but this is also very artistically interesting and fascinating and it belongs to our time. Bravo!
What a nice piece of classical music
Yeah. It would be very disrespectful to put this I go a game about a possessed bear.
Kraftvoller und dunkel timbrierter Bariton!!!! Mit Attacke !!!
Великолепные голоса. Восхитительная музыка. По поводу всего остального - думаю, «старым» операм надо оставить «старое» исполнение. Мир изменился, и пришло время для «новых» опер, которые будут исполняться «по-новому».
I wonder what the animatronics are doing before 6 am.
Que lindo! 🙏🏻❤️💐👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇧🇷🖖🏻
I kind a liked it ! Why not?
Pretty whimsical
What’s hood Bonnet the 3rd
I agree with everyone else: this just looks tacky, the three 'stooges' (as someone describes them) and all the arm and hand movements are unnecessary and distracting, and even Smoriginas is no more than adequate as Escamillo (the contrast in a clip with the late, great Horostovsky which came up on CZcams at the same time is all too obvious). Was looking forward to the streaming of this production - won't bother now, even for £3.

3:15 *I don’t understand why they’re dancing like that they’re not bulls😂😂😂😂😂*
I never really got this aria until I watched this video at .5 playback speed
Kostas is my favorite Escamillo, his attitude on stage trapped me and he really fits the attitude of the character. In this aria, I can say that technically he gets the perfect energy wich is possible to perceive in his great voice and his movements on stage. He seems to enjoy this aria as well as me
Perhaps, the dancers around him are unneccessary because his attitude and his voice are enough. Bravo Kostas!! Love your voice!!
Quién hizo la coreografía? El coreografo de shakira?
I got a Queen vibe here...

This is pretty gay - which is fine - but he can barely be heard. Hope it's better in the house.
