  • The FV721 Fox Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Wheeled) (CVR(W)) was a 4 × 4 armoured car manufactured by ROF Leeds, deployed by the British Army as a replacement for the Ferret scout car and the Saladin armoured car. The Fox was introduced into service with B Squadron, 1st Royal Tank Regiment (Aliwal Barracks, Tidworth) in 1975 and withdrawn from service 1993-94.
Development of the Fox began in 1965 and the following year the Daimler company of Coventry, which was building the Ferret scout car at the time, was awarded a contract to build 15 prototype vehicles. The first was completed in November 1967 and the last in April 1969. User trials began in 1968 and the first official announcement concerning the Fox was made in October 1969.
The following year the Fox was accepted for service with the British Army and a production order was placed with Royal Ordnance Leeds.
Production began in 1972 and the first vehicle was completed in May 1973. Production of the Fox has been completed at Royal Ordnance Leeds.
It had a crew of three and had a low profile rotating turret armed with a 30 mm L21 RARDEN cannon, which was manually fed with three-round clips; 99 rounds were carried. A coaxial L37A2 7.62 mm machine gun was mounted with 2,600 rounds. The weapons were not stabilised. This turret was also equipped with a set of two 4-barreled smoke dischargers. The vehicle had a combat weight of 6.75 tonnes and was designed to be air-portable. The Fox had aluminium armor and was fitted with a flotation screen. It lacked protection against nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. Powered by a Jaguar 4.2-litre 6-cylinder petrol engine, the Fox was one of the fastest vehicles of its type.

BV next to the driver so always had something warm to hand. Cons, armour as effective as a skin off a custard, spent more time trying to repair or waiting for REME to attend and repair, than driving. Very top heavy and easy to roll, had a colleague killed by a roll over. Once you got it going it didn't want to stop.Far preferred driving the Ferret or Spartan.

The Fox was (mainly) intended for TA units whose role was to defend BAOR rear areas (MSRs, depots and bridges etc.) against Warsaw Pact air assault. It was fast enough for seriously rapid road movement in theatre (and could drive easily from UK bases to Germany). The Rarden cannon could smash BRDMs and other Soviet airborne vehicles. Although the Fox was a recce vehicle, the crew could wreak havoc from a position of cover with the GMPG and the Rarden.

The Army stopped using them shortly after and later a variation of the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance featured the turret from a Fox reconnaissance vehicle mounted on the hull of a Scorpion and was called the Sabre.

The beauty of the Fox was it permitted reserve units to practice the reconnaissance role in peace time, very cost effectively. The Queens Own Yeomanry being prime examples. Had the Cold War turned hot. Those regiments would have been tasked with rear area reconnaissance duties and used as BCR's for their tracked equivalent units. The speed of the Fox was it's only real defence but that 30mm canon could give a nasty bite. During 1991 Gulf War the 30mm Rarden on different platforms, was engaging and destroying T55's.

I remember driving through Strabane in one on the way to the ranges at Magilligan thinking it would be a mistake for the IRA to take on one of these even though we didn't carry ammo for the Rarden, only the GPMG. The Rarden was good - we only used practice rounds ( Aluminium ) but even that would go through the side armour of a Ferret and right through the engine block! The Tankies were very good, they always saved a few rounds at the end of a shoot for us REME to have a go!

A couple of interesting facts, it could go backward as fast as forward ( about 55mph). It didn't had a reverse gear, instead had a direction change lever so had all the same gears to go backwards. It also had a pre-select gearbox so if you knew you were gonna get slowed or bogged down you could pick the next gear ahead if time and just stamp on the gear change pedal as it started to lose momentum.

Not bad, few things, fox started by Daimler was initially in its wooden model form called heavy ferret, Daimler had a major sulk when this was taken of them. she start a lot earlier however during the AVR projects which led to CVRT and CVRW. Fox and vixen are sisters rather than an adaption of. vixen was apart from ergonomically terrible deemed rather pointless to have two hulls when one could do the same thing if needed. several systems were proposed, the 25 mm was not the reproduction rather an export option as the 30 mm is planned from the outset although the RARDEN then had a 5 shot gravity clip. others inc milan as mentioned, blowpipe, stars-streak - aka starfox, and even consideration for a 90 mm and 120 mm wombat titled foxbat. these were discussed in an ORC meeting but no further work done. FOX's fate was ultimately sealed due to her predisposition to kill her own crew. after 22 serious injuries including 9 fatalities it was assed in detail by Alvis and FVRDE reps and it was found due to her heavier than planned weight in the rear she would under-steer, if drivers tried to correct this she would over-steer and flip. after the assessment it was noted that FOX should be immediately phased out of service.

The Irish Defense Forces used to have a bunch of these back in the 70's along with about 15 scorpions. It was funny watching the Irish Defense Forces on one side of the N.I. border and the B.A. on the other side using the same equipment.

The story about the Fox that went into a German farmers dining room was covered in the book Armoured Farmers, if I remember correctly the farmer started brandishing a shotgun at the 5 RTR squaddies and chased them down the road.

These vehicles were phased out of the army because they were dangerous for the crew. On throttling back at a corner the power steering was ineffective and the tendency to go straight on. This was experienced back in the 70/80s when a fox drove from Lulworth camp to Bovington camp, the crew sitting on the turret were cut in half and the driver sustained serious head injuries. I know the civilian mechanic who had to clear up inside. Also they were top heavy and one Fox turned over killing a Army Cadet, such rides were banned.

It seems strange to me, that so called reconnaissance vehicles today are 3 to 4 times the size of the Fox. I would have thought by now, new metal and ceramic deposits could create a vehicle as nimble and as hard to see, as a fox. Bigger is not always better, and combatants is not always as important as concealment...

Seem like something the british would slap together in a hurry to have something - cheaply.
But I like the idea of a 30 mm for smacking bad boys bottom.
The insane speed sounds like something for the german autobahn.

used to crew these - fun to shoot but could be a death trap, orders were that the turret crew should not fix the seat in the top position after a couple of people were chopped in half when the the Fox toppled over.
Fast to drive - no better vehicle for running away from the enemy as long as you were on a road, could do 70 mph in reverse.

I have always been a fan of the light scout vehicle. if used properly it can be quit effective. I always envisioned this as a quick reaction vehicle. To get to an area fast to give a little more fire support to infantry. At the very least it's not a barn door

Dear Decimus Meridius...a slight correction at 11:13 theyr were actually used in "combat" even though regional. Nigerian Army used in Civil War and even recently against Boko Haram and earlier with UN colours in ECOMOG contingent in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau. There you can see the effect and value for money of a 30mm cannon mounted on a simplified and relatively cheap platform. Couple of dozens rounds at 3000 meters will freeze some bald response from hard-minded knuckleheads, well beyond range of PKs, Dushkas and naturally RPG. More or less if you think of it is the natural ancestors concept of the modern TECHnikas, almost unprotected light platforms with a hell of (oftenly unaccurate!!) firepower. Of course i challenge any FOX with a Toyota Hj in terms of stability on paved and unpaved roads. Thanks for the video.

-plan to go to Bovington tank museum on birthday
-Virus breaks out, only several cases.
-Drive from Notts to the hotel.
-Take all the precautions, basically seeing no one day today.
-Go to the museum, no one is there except the staff and two other groups of people.
-Have a great day with the museum all to yourself.
-Leave for home, go into lockdown.
-Next couple of days the museum closes until further notice.
-Be very happy you saw it before then.

They tried palming them off on the RAF Regiment (Late 1980's) and we were part of the evaluation team. Gav managed to write one off within 20 yards of taking it out of the gates of RAF Coltishall (He hit a corona soft drinks wagon), So we suggested just how far the M.O.D. could stick them up their arse and stuck with our scorpions! I heard the T.A. got them in the end.🤣🤣🤣

Good vid! You can buy these quite easily in the UK. There are a few about as you may know, but unsure about Canada. You have more luck in the US.
Do a vid on the Saladin. That was a top vehicle, and they should've carried on upgrading it and offering it for export.
