if an alien landed in their spaceship tomorrow, i'd use this album as the definition of metal.
@@theodosios2615 it would have to be Chocolate Starfish
And they would think that punk rock was metal because *fast with distorted guitars*
And that grunge and hard rock was metal because *anger*
Instead a better example would be the black album or something at a more standard tempo.
Really please don't show that album to extraterrestrials
Painkiller the song just grabs you by the throat on the intro and never ever lets go.
This song is an absolute classic. I never realized that the bass was so hillarious in the song though.
Great video, my friend! And the new Priest album will be insane!
LOVE your stuff! Stay strong💪 Ukraine will emerge victorious🇺🇦🇺🇦
@@bobberyrob7973Will all due respect: no.
Man, I couldn't agree more. There was a really long time where Judas Priest were just my absolute fave. They'll always be top five for me, but I've fallen in love with King GIzzard and The Lizard Wizard a bit more recently.
Anyways, Rob Halford and Co. were absolutely on fire for this album, and especially this song. What a song structure. The changes come so naturally to this lineup, it was damn good.
gizz are amazing, pda is probably one of my favourite metal albums ever
@@ytgshlung Same! They really tapped something I haven’t felt since I first started listening to metal with that album. Specifically, Dragon and Flamethrower are just incredible
@@Madmetalmaniac42069 the dragon breakdown fucking snapped me in half, it's so good
Back in 1990 I worked all summer and bought my first CD player. I had no money left so my brother bought our first CD - Painkiller!!! I remember having parties with the whole family playing air guitar to this record. Good times indeed.
🇬🇧🇺🇦🇬🇧🇺🇦
If you listen to the early Priest albums, the bass playing is actually quite prominent and interesting. Pick Run of the Mill or Dreamer Deceiver, and you'll hear many parts that stand out from the guitar and a lot of improvised licks.
You mentioning how the main riff is a sort of proto-metalcore is interesting because I immediately thought "ehh it KINDA sounds like it, but not really" but then I remembered that My Curse by KSE sounds almost exactly the same...
Priest influenced swedish melodeath, which influenced metalcore!
Sorry, this comment is meant to carry on my crusade for the recognition of Judas Priest "Nostradamus", the most absurdly underrated metal opera of all times, an album with elements from all Priest career from "Sad Wings" to "Painkiller", an amazing Halford and the addition of the great Don Airey. And yet there's some spell that for some reason prevent most of the fans to hear it for what really is. Such a shame.
Seeing Richie play Painkiller ironically while having an aortic valve burst in Louisville, KY was something else. What a chad.
I remember trying to emulate the high screams of Halford of this song. I remember also the fucking troath sore
One of a handful of truly perfect albums in this world. A supersonic assault that'll leave you bleeding and begging for more.
8:25 as we say in Poland , "obudził się w tobie poeta?"
,,Chcesz usłyszeć fraszkę"?
-Geralt z Rivii
I've always said that metal lost it's way after the early 90s because Painkiller was the platonically perfect metal song and after that there was no higher mountain left to climb.
Megadeth and Pantera
Great Video as always!
"That programmed bass sounds so terrible, how did they get away with it?"
*Laughs in Mortician drums*
the 80's were THE thrash metal decade IMO
for Metal period
Great video!
All the best in 2024 Andriy.
🙏🏻🇺🇦
Love the oldschool type video. Painkiller is pure metal!
7:00 one of the bands that does harmonics best in riffs imo is machine head
What a coincidence, I havent seen you in a while, but I've been on a Priest kick recently and listened to a bunch of Painkiller yesterday AND watched the '91 Irvine Meadows show last night. \m/
\m/
Hell yeah.
Also, thanks for reminding me of these: Anthrax - Persistence of Time, and Annihilator - Annihilator are some amazing albums!
Priest are one of my favourite bands, it's unbeliveble how metal they could be. Scott's performance on that album was flawless, the guitar solos are amazing and the vocals too. It's interesting how they could make bass sound good even in those circumstances.
Btw, what are some other bands that you intend to analyse later? You bring some awesome points here, so it's always very to watch these videos. Keep rocking!
Another awesome video!
Amazing breakdown of the song structure!
Amazing song from an amazing band! I thrashed this album when it came out!
Ian Hill is so badass and chill! Saw them in 2015 and gonna see again next summer. Super solid in what he does, nothing too fancy though
Painkiller is greatest Judas Priest song ever. Loved this analysis!
Great video frriend! Love to see another bands and always the link to metallica
Thanks! Can’t ecscape that
One of the best albums of all time. And one other thing I admire with Priest is, imo they're the band who screwed up the least during the late 90s. While Metallica was leaning more towards rock for a time, Maiden, Slayer, Black Sabbath, etc were putting up their worst albums ever, Megadeth had made some good stuff but was preparing Risk... Priest comes out with Jugulator. Underrated album, and Ripper Owens is a beast. Cathedral Spires, man. What a song.
Thank God for Pantera
I'm calling this the most underrated metal album of all time. I mean in a period where Metallica was already on top, Pantera just broke out, Megadeth was going strong, I feel like this album just got buried as another Priest album, when its one of the most unique albums of the period
I HIGHLY disagree in the regard that this was an "underdog". Painkiller for me and my buddies (socialized as Teenagers in the later 2000's), the title-track definitely held up it's flag high as being the ABSOLUTE pinnacle of Heavy Metal. It ran on EVERY party we went and made ourselves at our homes, making our heads swing like crazy, air-guitar up, raving upon the solos and the stellar vocal performance and the MAD, PERFECT RAWNESS of the title-track.
No mention for KK was weird, but besides that, great video as aways!
Judas Priest was running the risk of becoming irrelevant at 5he end of the 80s. Then Painkiller came out. We were all amazed by how mean this album sounded. The addition of Scott Travis pushed the whole band to a new level. Still kicks ass unabashedly today.
Thanks so much for mentioning Annihilator. They are by far the best Canadian metal band I’ve ever heard.
It's amazing how good Ram It Down (the album...the song is still one of their best) could have been if they had a drummer that could actually play those parts (it's a drum machine, and pretty blatant, too). Painkiller is Priest sounding like all the kids they influenced, and it just WORKS.
Glenn also economy picks that riff - or at least in some of the video footage I've seen.
Nice video :)
Man it would be cool to see one of these for Annihilator too
7:00 this pops up in danzig alot aswell
Makes me want to hear the album again (haven't listened in a very long time)
Ian was a completely different player in the 1970s. Listen to Run of the Mill off Rocka Rolla and see for yourself.
The main riff must have been inspired by Damage Inc.'s riff "we chew and spit you out...", they're almost the same. Maybe that's why painkiller caught me that way, it's a great heavy song.
I think in early days Priest had better and more presence bass. Check out SWOD for instance 🤟🏼🇺🇾
The best Ian Hill bass work is in Jugulator IMO
Dude, I play that riff down there like Faulkner as well, I had no idea that was played higher up on the E string.
METAL PLIGIRIM is proud of you
Depends on how you define metal. I mean, it was the peak for that style, along with Dehumanizer that came out around the same time, but to me the peak of metal itself is Hammer Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse, or maybe Bleed by Meshuggah, or hasn't been written yet and we might be cheating ourselves by looking far in the past for the best when there's new bands starting out today that might do something even better.
The bass thing is interesting because the AI isolated stem of it nearly sounds like a proper, picked bass tone, which is tough to believe unless you hear it yourself!
This implies that they either final mixed Ian's bass louder or did some other mixing / mastering magic.
Maybe AI just can’t believe its cyber ears, and just amplifies the sounds it believes bass is supposed to be 😆
It's possible that the isolated bass track we got from Rock Band 2 was not the actual bass track used in the studio recording. It could've been either an earlier version of the bass track, or maybe Ian's bass track was lost so they could only use the Moog bass track.
Wouldn't be the first time it happened where the isolated tracks are different than the studio version: probably wouldn't get very far before someone mentioned the Acoustic guitar that's missing in the bridge section in Orion, Lars' third scream in Ride the Lighting not being present in the studio version, Death Magnetic being fully remixed for Guitar Hero 3, as well as other examples.
@@PcMacsterRace Yes that would also be my guess, that it is an earlier version of the track and Ian's recording was added later.
Your examples are also very interesting, I wasn't aware of Lars' scream...
Painkiller was literally the “savior” of metal in a way, as referenced in the lyrics.
In the original video, from what I remember, before the drums start, there’s a bunch of kids in a car and they’re en route to see Priest but they’re in a traffic jam. So they just start head banging . Anyone else remember this , or am I getting Painkiller confused with another music video!!!???
I’ve never seen the version I’m referring to online though …..
I remember the first time I heard Painkiller. I was COMPLETELY blown away by the drum intro, then the dive bomb and the riff came and I was like 🤯 "this may be the best song ever". But then came Rob's vocals and, at the time, I didn't like it at all hahahahaha I thought "man, what a shame a song THIS good has such shitty vocals". I was just starting to listening to metal, so I was still struggling with some of the styles of vocals. Thank God I kept listening to it. It's funny how I learned to apreciate the metal instrumentals despite not liking a lot of styles of vocals, like JP, Megadeth, harsh vocals, A7X, and with time we actually end up loving some of them. Metal is one of the best ecamples of "aqquired taste" 🤘
I had almost the same experience when I started listening to black metal! Stayed for the instruments and despite the vocals at first... Ended up liking quite a few black metal singers as well 🙂
Do you have any plans to do reaction videos? i really want you to listen to some Opeth. They've got really good bass in the first few albums.
I said it always: if my life would depend on showing the ULTIMATE metal song, I would smack in Painkiller and put that volume knob to MAX!
Triplets (12s?) between 8s and 16s. Sepultura made it their trademark. Beneath the Remains and Arise main riffs are played like this. 16s would be close to impossible to get down.
At the Gates also had interesting way with triplests, they (especially on slaughter of soul) tend to use it aganist normal blast beats (snare / kick going straight eight notes), wchich can be suprisingly confusing trying to play along
9:00 "Fifteen!!!" 😂
Painkiller - Judas Priest vs Death??
Can you check out Opeth
In my eyes they craft perfected musicianship with the best performance of a rhythm guitars bass and drums
With the best growls and singing in metal and also a mystery basses in the first 2 records especially the song 'To Bid You farewell'
Can you check them please
I wonder why they didn’t just use a session player for the bass parts instead of a crappy synth bass sound?
Don Airey was likely close by and finding a session player would've taken time and money. Since there are prominent synths on Touch of Evil and minor parts here and there on the album he might've already been called in for that.
I couldn't agree more. All hail Judas Priest!
Repeat after me: My neighbor, he is pain in my assholes. I get a window from a glass, he must get a window from a glass. I get a step, he must get a step. I get a clock radio, he cannot afford... Great success! I'm sorry man, I'm trolling; couldn't help myself. Seriously, love the wideo, sub'd🤣🤣🤣👍
🤟🤟🤟🤟
Brooo can You do the sanatarium solo no bass with tabs
Ооо, мій улюблений гурт на твоєму англомовному каналі. Топчик) Буде огляд нового альбому коли він вийде?)
It's hard to argue against Painkiller being the last and purest form of classic metal, and if you don't agree you probably had to be there...by the way I play the main riff using alternate picking and the B interlude riff on the A string.. And there is some structure to the pinched harmonics, the accents are on the F# and G notes alternating back and forth..
"Sad Wings of Destiny" is that band's Magnum Opus; not 100% metal but a masterpiece nonetheless.
No mention of KK? Only Richie?
I know Im gonna piss off many fans, but IMO Ritchie is overrated Af.
im aware that you always skip solos in your song analysis videos but not talking about glen tiptons solo is blasphemy! except that little detail great video as usual andriy sława ukrainie!
You need to check out Manowar
Why did you delete some of your old videos
Annihilator nice
Annihilator is amazing
Rapid Fire Is Also Purely Metal, and they did that a Decade Earlier.
I think that the bass track is great for this song. There is so much stuff going on in the Painkiller, that more complex bass would make it sound muddy. The sound is weird that’s true, however the midi picking sound sounds pretty sinister and robotic, and it doesn’t ruin the song at all, it work excellent with drums and guitars and makes it an actual fundament to the song, which is crazy and full of nuances. Could it be better? Yes. Should it be? Absolutely no
The entire album is an absolute masterpiece. That being said...
All Guns Blazing > Painkiller.

10 sec ago. wow
It's the best ever metal song Judas Priest did and I really like it but I'm not even sure I'd put it in my top 25, maybe even my top 50. It's a banger for sure but best ever? No. I realize you said that so dumbasses like me would get in the comments and say "Nuh uh!' but I just can't help myself. Besides your videos deserve some "engagement".
Oh and Slave to the Grind is a great album. They still had one foot in hair metal but they went way heavier with their second album. Feel like Skid Row deserves more love than they get.
This so called JUMPER part sounds too equal to the JUMPER part from Creeping Death by The f0kin' band \m/
Bass track sounds like songster
Purest metal? You clearly never heard of Massacration...
In all seriousness, it started as a mock band formed by a Brazilian Comedy group, with lots of 5th grade humor and broken English, that turned out to become an "actual" band.... still lots of 5th grade humor and broken English, though. Check their songs Metal Bucetation (Metal Cunt-ation), Metal Milkshake, or Evil Papagali (Evil Parot)
Metallica flashback 🤣🤣
Американцам про америриканцев смешно
Nah black Sabbath made the best metal song not Judas priest
best metal song of all time? Hell no! Bass and drums are boring af ( as almost always in Priest), the lyrics are more clichee than Manowar ( again, as usual in Priest)
for their standards, it's alright, but besides Jugulator, I can't stand this band
Ok troll
nothing trolling here. Priest just isn't for me at all. Besides the mentioned album, they are such a huge downgrade from what sabbath started imho@@Bunbunfunfun
@@terriblecertainity Yeah, I'm not much of a Judas Priest fan either. Breaking the Law is more hard rock than anything, and I think that holds up for most of Judas Priest's work.
@@anakinlowground5515 agree! great user name by the way
