Talgo Trainset move from Milwaukee to Chicago!

  • I got news that the Talgo 8 Trainset located in Milwaukee, WI, that is not used and is still brand new, was finally going to be moved to Chicago, IL, and then to Beech Grove, IN Amtrak Facility to be stored. Amtrak P42s #23 and #162 moved the lengthy train very late at night. I caught it at Canal St. crossing, just outside Chicago Union Station at 11:50pm on 5/28, 10 minutes before the next day.
    Update! - I thought the 3 cabs also had prime movers in them for power. I found out they are only cabs, so for the 2 sets 2 of the 3 cabs is at one end of both sets, like a NPCU, and the 3rd is an extra. If these were to run, they would have locomotive at one end, same concept as the Hiawatha. Disregard my annotation about "Where's the 4th?!"
    These 2 sets were made to be used on a Madison - Milwaukee line, after legal and law stuff occured, it didn't happen and was then to be used for the Hiawatha service to/from Chicago and Milwaukee. That didn't happen either, so they've been sitting, and finally got moved on 5/28/14.
    Biking towards downtown, to the Pennsy signals, an inbound Metra passed. Thinking that I missed it, I started biking closer to downtown, to Union Station. While biking down Lake street, about 1 block parallel to the tracks, I saw the gates go down, and hauled butt over to Canal St. crossing, it was the Talgos! I just barely missed it since about 10 seconds before I started recording, I just got to the gates on my bike, and hopped off while recording on my bike, hence the shakiness.
    Despite the Pennsy signals having less light to see the train, I think Canal St. was much better for lighting, except that E bell for the crossing was a bit too close and annoying, I think it turned out okay.
    Thanks for watching!

    Thank you Railroadfan 5383, Outstanding catch and you have no idea how important your video is. It is also a sad
    farewell to Wisconsin knowing what prosperity Talgo could have brought employing thousands in high paying jobs to
    Wisconsin's depressed economy.

      It has no sense but politics... that passenger cars still up to date and are designed for speeds up to 250kmh, and there are few DIESEL locomotives capable of move that convoy up to 220kmph (we use it on Spain on far railways that werent electrified), im sorry about hearing that, by other hand, we had abandoned airports here because you spend more time and money taking a plane compared to high speed trains, kind regards.

    In England (United Kingdom) where I live, we call these non-powered cabs Driving Van Trailers. Their function is basically so that the train can go both ways without them having to move the locomotive (which is powered) to the other end of the train.

    The talgo looks cool in black and red especially the cabcar. But it would be way cooler with black, silver, and blue.

    • @Railroadfan5383
      @Railroadfan5383  Před 10 lety

      I would agree with that. Since Michigan is now interested in buying the sets, they would be used on the Wolverine, and I think the Talgos would look better on that route with the red turned into a Navy Blue sort of. If they were to be used in Wisconsin, the red would be better, but paint the red to a blue to match the Amtrak P42s, and it would look really sharp at 110mph.

    • @Railroadfan5383
      @Railroadfan5383  Před 8 lety

      Yea they would be good, but sadly Wisconsin wont fund them ever so it wont happen. Talgo is still looking for buyers of the trainsets currently.

    Is Amtrak only using these on the NorthWest corridor on Amtrak Cascades or are these going on other routes to. Also, are these going to be painted to a different scheme or not. I subscribed!

    • @Railroadfan5383
      @Railroadfan5383  Před 10 lety +3

      Thank you Jacob! In my description it has a quick explanation of what they were built for. Currently, I've heard Michigan is interested in purchasing them for the Amtrak Wolverine Service. They probably wouldn't be repainted, since it costs more $$$ not needed to be spent, but regardless the Talgo train here is really cool in any paint in the Midwest.

      They are tested with Talgo and in maintenance when they take care of them. They are currently having Open Houses for railroads interested in buying them. Hopefully something will happen and someone will buy them. They are still in Beech Grove.

    Just came across this. It looks like more than a trainset, probably 3. I was not expecting such a long consist so didn't start to count. How many sets/carriages were there altogether please, and why the movement? I thought that the Talgos had proven unsuccessful in the New England states but served well in the NW.
    Never travelled on one in the US, but have several times in Europe, including one journey on the train that used run from Geneva to Barcelona through Avignon and then across southern France. The gauge changed at the Spanish border while we remained on board having a glass of wine.

    Why is it on the outbound track if it is to Chicago?

    • @Railroadfan5383
      @Railroadfan5383  Před 10 lety

      All 3 tracks aren't specifically set to have trains go in only 1 direction. They can have trains go in either direction, they have signals for it, and part of the design is so if they need all 3 tracks for one direction, they can do it, or mix it up so trains run on time, with no huge wait behind others. And are you talking about the Metra train or the Amtrak with Talgos here?

    The whole idea of the Talgos in Wisconsin was a good one. Just wrong politics. But boy, I think those cabcars are ugly.

    • @Railroadfan5383
      @Railroadfan5383  Před 9 lety +1

      I agree, bad politics in Wisconsin. As for the cab cars, they don't match with North American trains really, that's probably why many dislike them, they have more of a different country feel to them. But then again, the company who made them is from a different country lol.
