    Yeah one thing that always bothers me is the terminology of the word. when people refer to Danes or Norwegians as Vikings when they’re really not is a bit problematic and paints a wrong picture. When they say “the Viking king invaded England in 1066!” It’s kind of ridiculous, he wasn’t a “Viking” king, he was a norwegian king… who led a norwegian army.
    And about the helmets, it’s likely we don’t find much of them because the metal was reused in other things since metal was of course very precious.
    Also a video about the anglo saxon period would be very interesting! Maybe about the war between Edmund ironside and cnut the great.

    • @DecadesVideos
      @DecadesVideos  Před 2 lety

      It's always difficult to find the sweet spot with nuanced terminology, the word "Viking" is used more liberally in the modern studies, but it's not necessarily the most correct most of the time. I try to distinguish it properly in this video where I can, but that doesn't mean I'll use it accurately either. It's just become an easily recognisable word.

    who called Vikings Norse????? I'm Danish I know England called them Danes , central Europe called them Normans (that's why when Vikings was given a part of Northern France it was called Normandy and they were called Normans) or Northman , the east called them Rus or varangians, there were also Sveir(Swedes have their name from them Sveirige/Sweden means realm of the Sveir , in the Viking age in old Norse they used the term Vikingr/Vikingar in diff. ways both as "going Viking" but also "he was great Vikingr"and one rune stone text compains about Vikingar (plural) from another Scandinavian country that said Vikings probably identified by their tribe or Chieftan , in Scandinavia we don't know the term "Norse" other than from modern day English speakers, it is however very close to the Scandinavian word Norsk=Norwegian or Nordman/Normann also Norwegian, in Scandinavia we simply call Scandinavians during the Viking age Vikinger from Old Norse, we don't have other words for them sorry, anyway nobody know for sure what the word meant but certainly if was used about people, it could have meant seafarer, warrior, pirate or it may have come from the Old Norse word "Vik" meaning inland or Bay , there is also an entire are in Scandinavia called "Viken" so in many Scandinavian museums and books is say it ,means "people from the Vik"

      as a Dane I have never heard about that, however we call Norwegians Nordmænd/Norsk , Swedes call them Normenn , it would certainly not have been something Scandinavians used as an umbrella term, today Scandinavians just say Vikinger after Old Norse Vikingr/Vikingar(plural)

      @@reineh3477 nope not true... Norsemen were in fact Danes..the word Norsemen is due to Denmark owned England, norway, northern Germany, south Sweden and France.... even in Russia they had to pay danegeld (dane as in ..dane), and after Denmark established Danelaw in England, Scandinavia was. Jutland in Denmark more specific was the cradle of viking's according to history....but keep in mind that Germany, Sweden and Norway . personally I don't really care if it's true or not, but since I love history from all over the world, I just wanted to tell it how it is....
