Icelandic viewer here, there was another study in 2018 where 31% of Icelanders said they either believed in elves or were unwilling to rule out the possibility that they exist. As for granting wishes and not pissing them off, according to myths the elves usually wouldn't do anything to you unless you messed with them first and if you helped them out in some way they would always return the favor later.

@@mihajlomujkovic6816 they're regressing, elves are clearly real, how else would you explain anything ever?
Gods? I don't think so, seems unlikely, magical people in the sky sounds made up, magical people in the forest though, that's basically the precursor of witches, which were also real!
How else would you explain all the hangings / executions of women in the past?
They were just executing innocent women?
Seems far fetched to me, I would trust the judgment of pre-industrial-revolution people fully, it's not like they believed anything untrue!

The cat one is called the Yule Cat, a cat the size of a mountain that eats you if you received no new clothes on the day before Christmas. For any Americans who alway got clothes as an early present on Christmas eve and wondered why, that is a holdover tradition from the Yule Cat tradition.

but what's the point of that one. traditions like those are normally used to scare kids into behaving. but the kid has no control over whether someone got them clothes or not. and i find it hard to believe it would scare adults into getting their ids clothes.

Its worth noting that the version of elves that Icelandic people believe in is more like the Norse alfar than the modern day Christmas or Tolkien elves that most of us are familiar with.\
For a few more details, modern day elves, dwarves and fairies are all basically cultural descendants of the same Norse myths and share a lot of common features the further back you go. Our modern perceptions are basically because Tolkien put all the mythology of Europe in a blender to come up with his setting, but in Icelandic (and similar to old Norse) belief, alfar live in mounds and other geological formations and come out at night to do...various things. The specifics depend on which myth you're reading. I will say there are various places in Iceland that locals regard as fairy mounds, and enough people are concerned that they might be legit that it causes delays in construction projects and so on, with roads having to be rerouted or huge boulders having to be left in place out of a concern for disturbing the elves/fairies/alfar.

Elves are less "magical and fun" and more "mischievous and vengeful", and even those who don't believe in them are often unwilling to really put it to the test
There was a case of a road being built, where after moving a boulder that locals said had elves living there, the project was plagued by setbacks and accidents until the company replaced the rocks, gave an apology and rerouted the road, after which it was smooth sailing.
It's kinda like Ireland and fairies. Plenty of people don't believe in them, but very few would be willing to camp overnight in a fairy ring

If you ever see a welsh place name on a sign for example, they often start with "Ll" which is pronounced as "Cl" so Llandudno, for example, is pronounced as "Clandriyllo" the phonetic 'w' also makes an uh sound.
