  • During our backpacking expedition of the Tonquin Valley in Jasper National Park, we stop at every single campground to show you what to expect during your next backpacking trip in the valley.
We did not record any video at the cabins in the area because they will no longer be in operation starting in 2023. In this video you can expect us to cover the following campgrounds:
    - Astoria Campground
    - Switchback Campground
    - Clitheroe Campground
    - Surprise Point Campground
    - Amethyst Campground
    - Maccarib Campground
    - Portal Campground

Enjoy! its an amazing area, make sure you bring actual physical barriers for bugs, as chemicals will have no effect on that amount of mosquitoes. I basically wore my rain gear the entire 3 days. haha

Great video! Is there a time of year that you'd recommend going to avoid the bugs?

Definitely September. I would also go there as a priority because I have a gut feeling that Parks Canada is going to be banning all humans in that valley once they start releasing caribou from their breeding program. Its already banned 6 months out of the winter.

At the Amethyst lake campground, how many tents maximum are allowed per Tent Pad ?

All tent pads are small, maybe 5m by 5m. There’s usually a limit of 4 people per site and it’s usually one tent. Mainly because you can’t fit 4 tents on the pad unless they’re one person tents. 🤷🏻

Are these campsite on a first come first serve basis? Or is there a reservation system? If so where to find it and how does it work? Thinking of doing the trail this June.

These are all reservation only. reservation.pc.gc.ca - just look for backcountry then zone Jasper and pick the proper trailhead. These reservations opened up like 5 or 6 weeks ago and usually Tonquin will have all the great spots booked in the first hour. You may be able to find spots still but I would try using a website like campnab.com to snag cancellations.

What's the etiquette to those toilets, is it socially acceptable to poop 3 wide with stangers?
