Man! So glad things worked out with the bag/key! So nice to see things work out with generous strangers.
I am unfortunately taking it easy this weekend. Got a significant cut on my wrist at work thursday, 9 hours at the ER and 5 stitches later. Just trying to give it a chance to heal up.
Yikes! Hey, we ride when we can, we work or learn when we can't. It works for us!
Great series of videos Scott! Some of the roads/bridges/rivers/scenery were familiar! I went to the Wandr Rally in Canal Flats a couple weeks ago (after watching your video from last year) and we covered a lot of the same area. Glad to hear you're still loving the GS!

I just completed the Crux on my 1090 R. I totally agree with difficulty 4 down. Near the bottom, I completely lost my rear brake from overheating. Not for the faint of heart on a fully loaded Adventure Bike. Thanks for all your videos, see you guys at the Adventure Bike Gathering!

I ran the kbdr solo last fall. I found the crux on my loaded T7 was tricky. Line choice a must as skidding the rear was almost impossible, and a heavy front brake with no abs was a certain drop. Great job on that GS.

every time came to Vernon for the gathering, i took the road off Shelter bay north through the logging area that takes you a few kms west of Needles. parts of the route you show on this amazing video
I do not have a GPS path i used a map and a compass and I got lost a few times on the first go though :) all part of the adventure.
If one uses a GoPro when riding, you can tell how crazy steep and loose that section was. Nice going.
Edit: That steep section is one of the reasons slow sleep skills and control precision is so important and worth practicing.

I hve worked around bears for many years. lack bears though. Not really all that scary. They don't stop me.

That was a great looking CBDR, I had no clue that it existed Kudos to you for riding it solo, I wouldn’t do it alone on my 1250 because I know somewhere I’d drop it and I definitely need help picking it back up.

We took the big bikes down the Creston/Boundary trail last week too. Definitely a little spicy on them. The road from the bottom of the decent to Bounday Lake was perfect fun factor. Firm sand, no rocks, good sight lines = fun pace!
Yeah dudes! Gotta meet up with you guys sometime. Engineers are a bit smart for my liking but I'll give you a pass. :P (I am not sure what that means but it feels funny!)
Just did the section from Fernie area to Yahk a couple weekends ago. The fechfech, or moon dust, or flour sand - that caught a couple of us off guard!

Ah yes the lesson for keyless riders. If your bike tells you that your key is out of range stop immediately and find your key. Maybe it's just a battery or interference issue but if it's not you want to stop before you drive away and no longer have any idea where you might have dropped it. Happy you got lucky and got it back. I've felt that gut punch when you're on a long trip and you stop to discover you've lost your key. Sucks.
I shall pack that silly plastic key just in case. Not even sure what to do with it though.
Yeah I keep mine with the owner's manual in my filing cabinet. Don't know how works either. 🙄@@DirtChimps

Awe man, I attempted that route ( to Fernie) this summer too (2023), and got turned around by fire crews about 2/3rds down. I had just enough fuel to make it back, to take the hwy:( I must have been a few days ahead of you. Beautiful drive.

Excellent video, sir. I thoroughly enjoyed that and I’m going to do this someday. I rode my 1250 GS on the Utah BDR and great Continental divide route from Wyoming to Eureka, Montana, and then rode the Alcan home to Anchorage. I have a KTM 890 adventure now and I’m going to park it down there at my buddies house and use for a dedicated BDR/TAT bike For a few years. See you on the trails!

@@DirtChimps I just got the 890, I rode it home last week but was sketch as still winter here. But it feels like it’ll be perfect. Yup the GS was too big for the UT BDR haha but was still super fun and I didn’t regret it, not even once. The Kokopelli was the most challenging part with all the boulders on the steep downhill but the deep talcum powder sandy bits in sections 1,2&3 were sinister. It’s just too heavy on the front wheel to ride that much consecutive sand. We ran through a snowstorm and some deep muddy ruts on Soldier’s Summit and coming down, it started to dry and had to stop to clean the mud out of the fender a couple times because it hung onto the tire like concrete. Last spring I traded it for a ‘23 1290 Super Adventure R and put a high fender kit on it. I rode that to Dawson City over Top of the World Highway and then up the Dempster to Tuktoyaktuk NWT and then down the Klondike Highway through Whitehorse onto Skagway and back. Along the way played around on some sideroads, two track and four wheeler trails. Wasn’t the full on Utah experience but gave me a chance to tell that the KTM was far superior than the GS due to it just feels like a dirt oriented bike even though it does very well on the highway, the GS wins the pavement slightly though. I had a ‘19 KTM SA S (old chassis) and the GS was equally far superior to that one. These bikes just get better and better! Was originally going to ship the 1290 to Seattle this fall and ride home again but decided I’d better park a bike at my buddies house in Pueblo. I’m really looking forward to this 890 because it’s a new category for me but seems to be a no-brainer for a BDR bike. Sorry for the book! I am going to watch more of your content to put on our list. 😎🤘🏼

Fech fech is an arabic word for very fine powder clay. The word got well known with the Paris Dakar race where riders really learn how miserable they can get riding in fech fech for hundreds of km.

Nice Video. You commented that the GSA was the "best bike" for gravel and riding around that area. I recently posted a comment that the GSA is the "best bike" for riding the roads up the Dempster to Tuktoyaktuk. Did that in July and the bike did not disappoint in any way (I have a '22 Factory Lowered GSA).
Oooooo, that Sandy section did NOT look like fun! Picking up the big girl, especially loaded, is a massive challenge.

Which GPS are you using?
I have the NAV 6 on my GS but can’t say I’m all that thrilled with it for offroad.
I am using my phone and Sidecar by TMA for navigation. Works great.
We hope to do the Okanagan BDR either Sept 1 to 3 or the weekend after The Adventure Bike Gathering here in Vernon.
Ahem, it was an 1190 Adventure R. Also, that hot sauce is amazing! I just polished off a bottle of it tonight and have two more in the pantry ready to go. Mix it with some Chick Fil A sauce for some amazing stuff.

Thanks! Yes, GoPro Hero 10 Black. Dango chin mount. Media mod with rear microphone activated. A bit heavy, but worth it!

Thanks! The tracks are from CanadaBDR.com. I use Sidecar to follow tracks. I used to use Gaia but Sidecar is better for showing and hiding tracks, and I like the easy zoom buttons. Oh, and we made Sidecar so I am super biased, but there is a reason that we made it! :)
The Crux would be a good shakedown run if you were planning on visiting similar roads in other countries. Smell the clutch and brakes after.

Been trying to convince my riding buddies for years to do the Kootenay BDR instead of heading to the US, now we have to do it!
It really was nice. Have you done the Okanagan route? Roger tells me that it is more challenging. I look forward to scheduling it in this year if possible.
@@DirtChimps Not done any Canada BDRs but they sure do look attractive compared with getting to the South end of ORBDR I'm riding to from Calgary next week, definitely going to try one next year even if I'm solo like you

I saw a vid by one of those channels that is supposed to teach you how to ride adv bikes offroad and the instructor is riding a similar bike to yours. He suggested on big downhills to turn off then engine, put it in first and with the engine off it brakes more than with the engine on...so apparently more controllable. If I find the link again I will post it here.
That is good advice! I have felt compelled to do that before. Was not yet quite there on this one.
Interesting🤔… I took an off road course with a guy that was sponsored and did a few Dakars … he never mentioned turning off the engine.

Great question. They (Loop) do not protrude enough to be an issue, but I know what you speak of from others ear plugs, and from trying to wear ear buds so I can have music.
